David, I love your videos. I started with Celtic Design Intro and am working my way thru them all. I've always wanted to learn the celtic design but couldn't find a good tutorial, then I came across your videos. Your teachings have helped me to do the designs properly, and your technique is easy to remember. Thank you so much for posting the videos and sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for these tutorials. I was always sad that I don't have enought creativity to make celtic ornaments. Yesterday decided to search on U-tube any videos and after a while I found YOUr lessons. I watched all of them, then started with a simple one, got the technic and here it is! I still have some troubles, but I did it! I created several pieces of different shapes. Amazing!
Mr Nicholls, I am amazed by the simplicity and elegance of your methods. I plan to make some carved trivets for Christmas, so I'd better get started! Thank you for making the Celtic Design videos.
I knew about the Lindesfahrne Gospels but not the book of Kells! They are so underrated it is actually disappointing, they are magnificent works of art
You are awesome and timeless and I never get bored no matter how long the videos are. I have learned so much and have a passion for this because of you Thank you for sharing and being so patient and thorough. Love and Peace. Catherine from Canada
LOL I was like "It has to be something from eBay"Sure enough you had to say it! I do love watching you, I am working on learning these new skills for chip carving and learning this helps in design and carving of shapes and use of my compass and straight edges. Thanks
Somehow, the geometric version seems easier to execute than the freehand one. Thanks SO much for posting all of these videos. It's been wonderful to learn the "ins and outs" of Celtic patterns.
Yea, I don't know how I found your channel and videos, but I have watched nearly every one of them. I don't know...I find your voice soothing and your videos interesting in a "off beat" way. Thanks :)
David, can I make a suggestion - do your preliminary with all the lines you _don't want_ on a white paper underlay. Then, when it comes to the design proper place a sheet of transparency _over_ the white underlay and draw the design proper on _that_ using the underlay as guide. Obviously pin the two together so they don't slide. Then, when you're finished simply remove the top transparency _et voila_ - a lovely neat design with no distractions.
***** It's a "Maped Stop System Compass". While the details say that it has metal legs, it looks a bit plasticky in the picture. Oh well, it didn't cost much.
If l may add.... some fast lock compasses have joints on each leg, approximate the center of each. For this kind of art, I've super glued them straight so as to keep them from bending as l scribe.... Enjoy!
Greetings from Canada. Love your videos. With each of the linked trefoils, could also connect around the rim? Or would that be too much and lose the design?
I don't know what it's called. I was issued it at school in the 1960,s and I stole it when I left. It has served me very well over the years! ;-) Thanks fro your kind comment, Luis.
It's just one that I stole from school in the 1960's , It's my favorite and I've had a lot of use out of it over the years! Thanks for your kind comments, Tacpd.
Shouldn't the title read "six linked _trefoils_"? ;) Regardless, I love your videos: I'm trying to draw some manuscript-style illuminations. I'm also finding the geometry lessons interesting too.
yes, of course! Just draw a square and the diagonals, then draw the trefoils inside the triangles. You'll have to adjust them a bit as the triangles aren't equilateral.
To divide a line in half. Draw a line of whatever length you want. Open your compasses to any distance as long as its more than half the length of your line. put your compasses on one end of the line and make an arc top and bottom. repeat from the other end of the line. Join the two crosses. watch the video.
I realize that I’m years late in asking, but how expensive is a quality compass in your area of the globe and while we’re at it, are electric erasers available there? These two things might go a long way to improve your accuracy.
I don't know. I have several of them that I've owned since I was a teenager. Have a look on Ebay. Why would you need an electric eraser? I can't really understand the point of them.
David Nicholls the electric eraser is incredibly useful and accurate when erasing in very confined areas. Your technique of laying out the Celtic knot work is an absolute work of genius and I thank you for your videos. I’ve looked at many other methods in both videos and books and I feel none of them compare to your method. I live by one of largest bodies of fresh water right next to a giant refinery owned by British petroleum along with a steel mill owned by Arcelor Mittal a citizen of the “world”. I’d much rather have on or two golf courses
Thanks for those kind words, Adam! My tutor wouldn't allow rubbers in the room and told us that we should draw it correctly first time round! (very good advice) I had an electric eraser once but I hardly ever used it. I've probably still got it somewhere.

David, we don't _mind_ it taking a long time! We _like_ watching your videos and your voice is nice.
thanks for your kind comments, Sue xxx
Wow like always it's very nice
What a pretty stained glass window that preliminary design would make!

No no no no! David we're not going _anywhere_ !
Going to use this in a cane design
well done! good luck with it!
Beautiful design. Isn't it amazing what you can do with the humble compass? I've just ordered one from Amazon! Now waiting for the postman.
Thanks! glad you enjoyed it. I hope you haven't ordered plastic compasses, they are very inaccurate!

What’s the name of your drafting compass? Great videos!!!

I have a rotoring compass i payed £50 for and its amazing. Can use pens and all sorts with it
What type of compass are you using? Also, I really enjoy watching and learning these videos Thank you :)

Cel Works Thanks for noticing that! It's been up there for three years and I never noticed it!!!
David, can you do four linked trefoils?
He did:

yes, of course! Just draw a square and the diagonals, then draw the trefoils inside the triangles. You'll have to adjust them a bit as the triangles aren't equilateral.
So, what was in the post?
I don't remember! ;-)
@@davidnicholls100 hahahahahahaha
I'm sorry I didn't understand how to make half the line...
What do you mean?
ua-cam.com/video/N4dnCCBgpqg/v-deo.html
Do you simply measure the line or there is a right way to get it from two points with the compass?
To divide a line in half.
Draw a line of whatever length you want.

put your compasses on one end of the line and make an arc top and bottom.
