''if you just keep doin' it, you can' help but learn it, and one day it'll be there''. spot on, jorma, thank you!
-Jorma, with his buddy Jack bass player, they are my heroes. Not only did they inspired me in deciding to learn to play acoustic and electric, but when I read one day that both of them escaped for holidays in scandinavia to free skate for endless miles on frozen lakes, that made me want to learn skating. Now I've also been roller skating for more than 20 years on roads and sidewalks.
As a flat picker, this made so much sense. Thank you for posting this!!
Oh, Papa John would be so proud. You are a true gentleman,Jorma. Not many players are so generous in sharing real insights such as these. Thank you, good sir.I cannot wait to put our own 30yr relationship to the test with a little table tappin"...
I really like this video. As a Hot Tuna / Jorma fan since the first Hot Tuna vinyl album, I spent years trying to imitate a fraction of Jorma's playing style, having watched a few other Jorma videos. This is a great video that he backs up to the very start, and gives some background. I get some idea of how he does his magic, and he gives some solid advice. I think credit goes to the interviewer for asking the right questions.
Nobody pulls sound out of an acoustic guitar like Jorma: those nasally rakes near the bridge kill me, the clean full tone, and his rhythmic patterns are unique. Been listening since the early 70's, used fingerpicks for years (until acrylic nails came along). Bravo Jorma!
Dont forget jormas slide ups and downs. Ive never heard a tone like his when he slides up the neck
These last years Jorma has done Winter sessions of Fur Peace Ranch in a warm place such as Maui, San Diego, Desert Springs. I've gone to two Winter sessions: he is just the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. His wife is a sweetie, too. He enjoys teaching ALL levels, not just super players. Very patient.
I had lessons way back in the 60's in San Jose and got these recordings as a bonus. Jorma said they were 1962 in San Jose. He was called "Jerry" back then. I have uploaded them and you are free to download them. app.box.com/shared/20o9rl1dp8
Enjoy
Agreed. Jorma is the BEST!
"Third Week In Chelsea" is also finely performed on the Hot Tuna "And Furthermore" record, which I have on CD, and autographed by Jorma and Jack. So cool.
I'm a bit late to the Koukonen/Casady fan club . . but better late than never. Jorma is so easy to watch, listen and learn from. I've been lucky to see Tuna a few times in the last 7 years. He makes it look so easy but this is tens of thousands of hours playing/practicing. And watching him do this makes me want to play more, which is the entire point. Thanks for posting this.
Excelent video, thank you! Genesis was the first song I learned to fingerpick. It took me tens of ours to figure out how the song is played and how to get my thumb to do its own rhytmic part. Saw Jorma in Helsinki yesterday, he really is the master of acoustic fingerpincking style guitar and a great songwriter too. Saw him and Jack -92 and I think Jormas playing is even better now!
Great lesson Jorma, Freight Train was my first finger pickin song to learn, Thanks Jorma
I dont play guitar, but Im such a fan of Jorma's. I really enjoyed that.
Sounds simple but, it ain't easy. He sure makes it look easy!.
Love Jorma style especially electric back in 1974
great interview with a great player/instructor - love that 'complete' sound - he always sounds great with Jack, but nothing is 'missing' in the solo performance - in fact, the solo performance might even be more impressive because he's got such a great groove going...'the ear wants to hear" - (mr. burns' voice) excellente!
Awesome video! Thank You for sharing this!!!
Timing is the key!!! Alternating the bass... there's a ton of great 🎵🎶 information here... thanks Jorma!!
Love Good Shepherd....its a great chord progression..
Jorma rocks!
Thanks Jorma! You're the best! Generosity with your knowledge assures your immortality! Embryonic Journey is a gift to us all. Hope I can figure it out! Peace.
JORMA,IS SO AMAZING, PURE MUSICIANSHIP.🐟😎🎸🔊🎶☮️🎼 BOB.
What a surprising nugget. I'm gonna start tapping tables before I bring my 12 string out of mothballs. Thanks! (That's Jorma teaching... I was just trying to see him play.)
240p, we meet again!
Very cool lesson. Great advice!
genio ... excelente .y tan generoso .... cuanto talento .. historia pura ...
Thanx Jorma!
great guitar player
my favourite one
Thank You. Chris
Damn fine guitarist
I do think Jerry and jorma were dear friends they sound like brothers
Very good!!
Jorma suddenly gets more animated.
"Whatever happens, you want to establish a groove!"
Do you have tabs for Keep on Truckin Mama? I need to do more than just strum chords to it.
Thank you!!

Enjoy
I read somewhere that he attended Santa Clara U. back then.
This is super cool
Excellent
There be much wisdom here.
Is this from a VHS video? It seems out of focus.
Jorma, do you have the Full lesson and tabs of Embryonic Journey? I want to learn that song.. all the way through.. do you have it posted up?
Michael Craig Yes it has been.
Jorma takes the mystery out of geetar playing
Who gives a rats ass about the video quality!? Its all about the SOUND.
TX>>>very informative and entertaining.
"I'm not a scale guy" BOOM, proof that you don't need to be slaving over scales day in and day out to become an incredible artist. Not that this guy isn't special or anything, but still. Play what sounds good to you! Memorize the shapes that YOU like. Chances are you're playing scales anyway. Sitting down and trying to learn theory can be some of the most defeating moments of your life, at least for me and many others. If you're to get anything out of your instrument, it's through putting your emotion into it.
Man I cherish the tunes ,live or canned give me the tuna... heat it up passed almost hot ...and let it rip
What is the song at 0:45????
Jorma and an EXCELLENT lesson!!!!! Thanks JK!
"I don't read tablature" dude come on. I can understand not being able to read music, but everyone and their mother could figure out tabs in like 2 minutes.
Good musicians don't read/need tabs. They use their ears.
He didnt say he couldnt read he just said he doesnt. I dont either. I use chords and figure by ear. Same way jorma does. And i learn much better than most of my friends with their tabs
why are these videos always such crap quality
2011 😳
