  • In this video I share five things that I think you need to know about the interplay between autism and anorexia. These are shared with with my personal hat on (as I had comorbid anorexia and autism) but which with my professional hat on, I believe are fairly universal, useful things to consider...
    00:00 Introduction
00:54 Anorexia is a bully to be beaten, autism is a friend to be made
01:52 Language matters ' I am autistic, I had anorexia'
03:44 The interplay is complex, ask 'am I seeing autism or am I seeing anorexia?'
05:56 Autistic traits can be flipped to promote wellness instead of illness
07:03 Autism is for life - we need to learn to live well with autism to prevent eating disorder relapse
    09:25 Summary
This short video is based on a talk that I gave for the PEACE Pathway international conference on 7th September 2020 which aimed to updated practitioners worldwide about the work being done by the team at the Maudsley in London to develop a care pathway for adults with comorbid autism and anorexia. I am an autistic person with an eating disorder. The obsession on foods, exercise, and the way my body looks and feels can be overwhelming.

Hi!I am a student at Goldsmiths University of London, pursuing an MA in Virtual and Augmented Reality. Currently, I am working on a research project that investigates the effectiveness of virtual reality in helping ordinary people learn how to properly care for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) by using eating disorders as a case study. This project aims to expand the pool of ASD caregivers. We are looking for advisors who have experienced eating disorders and are willing to share their experiences, as well as individuals who can supervise and provide feedback to improve my experimental design. Your role would be to share your personal experiences with eating disorders, provide feedback and suggestions to help optimize the experimental design, and help provide advice on the experiment process to ensure its scientific and ethical standards. If you are willing to take part and help, please leave me a comment. Thank you all for your support and participation!

To me anorexia was very much a way to have a bit of control over a world that rejected me and that I couldn’t understand. It provided me with a numbness that erased the (sensory, emotionnal) hell around me. I cared only about food, so the rest didn’t bother me as much.
It was also a way to reject femininity - later I realised I am trans (somewhat agender). (I’d really have benefited from puberty blockers but I didn’t even know you could be transgender.)

That’s how I feel. I’m like, well, I’m going to transform my body and that’ll show you. It’s like showing that I can be in control and improve myself. To spite everyone. I know people don’t like me, so being smaller may make me more likable.

Great video. I wish I knew about autism befre going to res. People calling me too sensetive and bullying me for difficulty socializing caused me so much pain and worsened the ED ten folds. I never want to go back to treatment

Currently have both. I had anorexia in the past, but wasn’t diagnosed as autistic yet (took 10 more years). But what set me off again is repeated failure of romantic dating. I thought with someone but they just used me for physical things and gave a BS excuse to not see me (instead of just saying they don’t like me, which would be easier). I couldn’t sleep or eat and lost weight. Now I feel I need to look good and lose more weight to compete and be liked. People treat me better when I’m dangerously thin. It’s sad but true. It’s tough when I feel hopeless. Neurotypicals are difficult to deal with and give me trust issues.m
I also found out I may have rosacea which makes my skin look weird. Now I need to get laser treatment. It’s a lot to deal with. I was never considered attractive until my first bout with anorexia in my mid 20s. So now I feel like my mind is going back to that mode of being and staying under 100lbs. My natural weight is 103-106. But 5 lbs is a lot.

I’m nearing 40 so I panic about never finding anyone and this drives me to run more and exercise to try to improve myself and make myself more likable .

I am a parent of a teen who is both autistic and struggles with food. This video was very informative and helpful so thank you. Also, in your opinion, is there a particular type of therapy (occupational, CBT, etc) that you think can help untangle autism and eating disorders and help the person build the skills of discernment you were talking about?

      Hi!
I am a student at Goldsmiths University of London, pursuing an MA in Virtual and Augmented Reality. Currently, I am conducting research on how virtual reality can assist ordinary people in learning to properly care for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), using eating disorders as a case study. This project aims to broaden the pool of caregivers for ASD.
If you are a parent who has a child with ASD and has experience with eating disorders, I would like to invite you to share your insights and experiences with me. Your input would be invaluable in enhancing my research. Your role would involve sharing personal experiences with eating disorders, providing feedback to refine the experimental design, and offering guidance on maintaining scientific and ethical standards throughout the process.
If you are willing to participate and contribute, please leave a comment below or contact me directly. Your support and involvement in this study would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for considering this opportunity to collaborate.
