Tom Waits, one of the few artists that i know that can romanticize the abyss.

Once you discover Tom you will find him everywhere. He has been covered and sampled. He acts and does voice overs. His appearances on Letterman’s couch are some of my favorite bits over the years.

I was doing some temp work a few years ago, I had all Tom's tracks set on a random on a very long play list, music from the start of his career to stuff just out at the time. Mule Variations, Alice, Blood Money, Orphans and Real Gone were still pretty new to me and albums like The Black Rider, Bone Machine, Franks Wild Years, Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones and some compilations of early stuff are like old friends. I love close to everything of his that I've heard. Tom Waits scratches an itch that the likes of Don Van Vliet started.

Rod Stewart covered this in 1989 and had a top 10 hit with his version but listening to Rod singing it is like hearing the Chipmunks do "Maggie May".

His most known song. Yeah, the video actually got some MTV play, back then.
Seeing that you really like Waits, and so many of your subscribers hate him, I hope you will do the next as an album reaction.

no one has seen Tom and Cookie Monster in the same room at the same time (~_^) I love his storytelling. Tom is often a "Love it" or "Get it the f#!k outta here!" kinda artist for a lot of people.
I tend to love his stuff.

Rod Stewart had a big hit with this song. There's a bit of a story there. IDK how true it is but I once read that Bob Seger was recording it in one room and Rod Stewart overheard it. He recorded it, released it first, and had a big hit with it.

man oh man I feel like I've been waiting for months for you to get to Downtown Train, if you decide the check out Bob Seger you listen to the album Live Bullet one of the greatest live albums ever made, great job reacting to Downtown Train a great love song, you might want to do the Rod Stewart version, many Waits fan don't like it but I do, he trades the lead guitar part for a synthesizer, which makes it a little cheesy but it's still a Tom Waits song.

And I agree with how you received this song. I’ve been listening to this album since it came out, and this one is lovely but also feels like a palate cleanser between rougher weirdness. Gorgeous song, but, yeah, could have been played on the radio, not that his stuff has ever gotten radio play. Like Nick Cave.

This song and Jersey Girl were his two big crossover songs. But they were hits for other artists, Rod Stewart and Bruce Springsteen, respectively. There's a great stripped down, raw performance of Downtown Train from the San Remo Jazz Festival in 1983. I think the whole concert might be on UA-cam.

Looking forward to you reacting to anything from The Heart Of Saturday Night. Probably my favourite Waits album.
Have to be honest, I prefer the more Jazz oriented and tuneful part of his career, up to and including Heart Attack And Vine in 1980. It all got a little too experimental after that for me, although each album is not without some great individual tracks.

I love this song, but something I don't understand. 2 very derogatory lines in the song about the Brooklyn girls. You wave your hand and they scatter like crows. They have nothing that will ever capture your heart. and They're like thorns without the rose. Why did the writer say that about Brooklyn girls?

@@torgeirgimmingsrud2439 music that is dominated by a "poetic" approach tends to be awful, as the tune plays a distant second fiddle to the rambling. Think rap, or rampant hipster stuff like Tom Waits here. As a musician, I respect the music first and foremost.

@@pentagrammaton6793 I see music and poetry as equal artistic expressions. Two sides of the same coin. So I don't mind shifting pov when I hear great music together with mediocre poetry(as in some classical music). I tune into the overall musical expression and don't let the lyrics get in it's way. In fact I can see it as clutch to the overall expression that music is in the front seat and the lyrics is more or less in the background. Never understood why it provokes music people so much when it's the other way around. Or is it simply the fact that Waits challenges peoples concept of beauty in music?
