His genius is not just musical but also visual. I believe he is capturing elements of film noir in this video.

It feels like a student project for a Jim Jarmusch film class to me. And you're right. This piece is all sorts of noirish, especially the lighting.

Tom Waits is more than just a singer/songwriter/musician, he's also an actor, and film maker. His videos can be multi media performances. The "audio quality" is intentional, to emulate the gritty soul of the piece. Tom Waits is truly exceptional: there is literally no one like him.

Tom Waits (a New Yorker I believe) is one of the greatest songwriter/storytellers I've ever come across and his unique and iconic voice always seems to compliment his music perfectly. He always writes for the drunken, downtrodden, misunderstood, outsiders in life so beautifully. This song is real evidence of his great humour. He knows only too well some people hate his voice, so he's having a good old fashioned laugh at himself. God bless him. Nobody else out there even remotely like him.

Tom is actually a California native. I live near Whittier, CA, home of “Kentucky Ave” where he spent some time as a kid. Yup, the Kentucky Ave from the song.
I believe he was born in the San Diego area, but man, he’s got that boozy New York style for sure.

He wrote the song which has been covered by other artists several times over. Great of you to give the song another chance and take interest in the songs origin and beginnings.💛👍

Yes, that is his real voice. Rod Stewart had a number one hit with this song. Fun fact, that is the real Jake LaMotta (from Raging Bull) Tom is a national treasure, and yes, this is the studio version.

It's kinda just about a guy waiting for a special girl to show on a train he frequently catches. He's kind of a romantic and poetic about it, but he's also pretty switched on about the types of people who ride the train. That's about it. The beauty is in the language. I kind of adore this song, not gonna lie.

Tom Waits is an interesting artist, he experiments with lots of different genres. Whether you like or dislike his music you can't deny that he's a very unique musician.

He’s a great storyteller. ‘I hope that I don’t fall in love with you’ is a great one by him 🙂

I mean... it's not like this song is some mysterious, symbol-filled enigma. It's a song about a dude who's in love with a woman who doesn't love him back, and he keeps trying to see or meet her riding the train:
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train?
Every night, every night, it's just the same
    You leave me lonely
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train?
All my dreams, all my dreams fall like rain
The whole "Grammy" thing was a nomination for the Rod Stewart cover version of this song that hit the top 5 around 1990. Waits himself has never had a hit single, but he has a number of extremely famous fans such as Bruce Springsteen, James Hetfield, Bob Dylan, Michael Stipe, and numerous others. He's sort of a "musician's musician" and an extremely gifted songwriter.

Please check out Lucinda Williams " Essence"... she like Tom is an incredible American singer/songwriter. You won't be disappointed.

A California boy, who married an Illinois girl. He's really something special. He's a bit of an acquired taste, though. It helps if you've had your heart broken. Maybe try "All The World Is Green"? It's quite beautiful. Perhaps "Take It With Me", as it is also quite touching.

thanks for not constantly interrupting the music and feeling yourself more important than the song, most people who do reactions do this.
nice analysis and conclusion, way to go bud!👍

Tom Waits, while one of a kind, has a bit of Bowie to him I find. Not copied in anyway, but similarities. Both don't just sing a song, they inhabit a character who then sings the song. They kept evolving. Years and years of music, always great. True artists in every sense of the word.

May I suggest Tom Waits's "Georgia Lee"?

I've yet to hear Stewart's version, I've deliberately avoided it all my life. Because this song is kinda sacred to me.
