this is a very underrated lesson and applies to any genre of music. People some times get so caught up in the music composition and think they need all these instruments and complex chords when it sometimes takes away from the song.

Kevon, you just helped me! I have an event next month where I need to put a choir together. I was stressing about the fact that all the songs I know that match the theme of the service would be too difficult for the choir to learn with limited rehearsal time. This is a kick in the pants for me to just make a song; I can choose the lyrics to match the service theme, and it can be as easy as 1-2-3 for the choir to learn. Thanks, bro!

Thank you for this inspirational video about creating songs brother. This will help me in my journey in composing songs for our local church and use them for the glory of God. I really have a heart and passion for creating songs, but stuck to this concept of having a nice progression of chords with fancy arrangements of instruments. Writing lyrics is a process. 1. What do you want to say? Suppose you have a melody. Take Kevon’s. What could you say in such a melody? Something serious I guess? Is it a prayer? 2. What’s the Christian view on it? That takes much Bible study. 3. Kevon’s song has 3 parts. Can you recognize a chorus, a verse and a bridge? Now, what would you say in the chorus? Mostly a chorus contains a biblical truth. The verses can dig the thruth out so every time you come to the chorus it gets a deeper meaning. And maybe the bridge makes a huge view to put all in God’s perspective. Right? Now you have the skeleton of your songlyrics. 4. Count the syllables of each melody-sentence. Make sure you get the right stress on the right syllable. Sing the melody then you’ll hear which note is stressed and which not. 5. Now you can make sentences that fit in the melody sentences. Sing it when you have an idea. Does it fit? Write it down! Is it a dumb idea? It doesn’t matter. Yet. Don’t put it away. You never know how you can use it later. 6. While writing and studying you discover more or deeper wisdom. That’s the process. So keep changing your lyrics. And then you discover that your phenomenal idea doesn’t fit in the song anymore. Songwriters call it ‘killing your darlings’. Do it, it will make your song so much better.
