This man is on a different level. Truly a savant of the guitar. No matter how much you practice. You will never reach his level. He has a God given gift and he's always playing. Very few if any will get to this level of guitar playing
a great gypsy jazz player and a great straight ahead jazz player. I've never seen anybody this good at both. And he used to tour with a country and western band in the states many years ago. They used to introduce him as Billy Joe Green.
Anyone who steps out on to the stage and gives their all should be respected. With the ability, professionalism, & mastery that Bireli Lagrene has achieved, what can you really say other than, Way to go, great job, WOW!!! Things you would never say. I think you missed that third note.
his playing is really sloppy, takes lots of risks and fall, show-off playing. has a good head for music, brilliant, but his playing is choppy. John McLaughlin does similar, like he is chopping through a jungle with a machete. But mcLaughlin has written some good works as a music writer.
Rather you like this or not, it should be respected that anyone who can devote this much of their life to master an instrument is amazing. The discipline and passion alone it takes to stick with anything let alone the talent is a gift. This should not be criticized. It's not for everyone, but for those that understand what it takes to play at this level appreciate the dedication and hours and hours of sacrafice. And in the real world, this guy plays his ass off.
I remember being in the big tent, not so far from the stage. I think he came on stage and said in a very shy way"Hello, my name is Birelli lagrène, and he started playing. That day I understood a lot more about jazz guitar, and especially that you don't have to play always fast to make it swing. He was excellent at playing the medium tempo heads...Just because he has an electric guitarist technique as well.
This concert was absolute magic: Birelli wasn't famour at the time and looked very shy that day. After a song or two(probably these two), he introduced the musicians and said in a very shy manner "and my name is Birelli lagrène". Seems he didn't have an amp on stage and played straight into the PA, so his sound was excellent on heads and a bit sloppy on fast runs. A magical time
It's hard to believe he is self taught 'cause his father and mother were guitarrists. But I do think he's ear taught, that is, he doesn't read notes at all. I'm not very sure. Lets search for that info.
2 killers, and a guy from another planet ! I'm so glad to be a contemporary of probably one of the greatest guitar geniuses EVER, and to have seen him already 3 times live !
Oh for anyone who never heard him play your in for a treat he makes this guitar “sang” like so many other great players out there just know there’s so many and he is definitely one of them just to mention. Venture out yourself and see and then listen to them and for them. Because there’s a lot out here.👍🏿
@Reinhold Binder I first heard Joe Pass in 1971 and he was one of my four core jazz guitarist that influenced me to play jazz guitar after previously playing rock guitar for 10 years. My original four core jazz guitarists were: Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, John McLaughlin, and Larry Coryell. I met and almost played with Larry. A great guy! Shortly thereafter, he passed. Since then, George Benson, Pat Metheny, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Stowell, Jess Van Ruller, Szymon Mika, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Misha Mendelenko, Mike Moreno, Lage Lund, Jonathan Kreisberg, Nelson Veras, and Gilad Hekselman have been my major inspirations.
@highlandbrian I was sitting there and believe me, apart from that solo part, the concert was excellent, and definitely not flooded with fast scales... His slow playing was absolutely heartfelt and really did swing!
BIRELI ! GEORGE BENSON AND PAT MARTINO MUST BE WELL PLEASE WITH YOU. 'DONNA LEE' IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PLAY ON THE GUITAR AND YOU PLAYED IT WITH SUCH EASE. I AM AMAZED, WOW!
My goodness how in the hell can someone get this good? Ridculous. I use to think there was no one on George Benson's level boy I was WRONG Benson might have trouble keeping up with this guy. He matches Benson in everything, what a talent he is. Diffinately a different cat.
Seeing him play an archtop, I immediately think of Joe Pass. Pass must have met Bireli. I wonder what they thought of each other's playing. I'm certain Pass is among Bireli's influences - but what did Pass make of Bireli's incredible genius and virtuosity!? I hope they met each other, spoke with each other and maybe even played together.
Try again BL was guesting on super Flamenco talent Tomatito tune, I thought how'd T get George Benson on this cut. Awesome then awesomer now!! I'd kill for half of his knowledge & abilities WOW!!! Is right.
govan is an incredible player, a legend in his own right..but in terms of sheer technique, Bireli is at the top, with guthrie at a close second. IMO. but i dont believe musicians should be compared. they are both incredible and lets leave it at that
This man is on a different level. Truly a savant of the guitar. No matter how much you practice. You will never reach his level. He has a God given gift and he's always playing. Very few if any will get to this level of guitar playing
I agree he is one of the few to play at this level. Try to listen to Matteo Mancuso - Donna Lee
Bireli, a master of improvisation, period.
Ditto..
My r
He has so many great lines, he never regurgitates the same old stuff every solo, unlike some I could mention. Ridiculously good.
a great gypsy jazz player and a great straight ahead jazz player. I've never seen anybody this good at both. And he used to tour with a country and western band in the states many years ago. They used to introduce him as Billy Joe Green.
What an animal ha ? 🤪
That's hilarious!

bireli is off the charts, easily great or greater than ANYONE ever to play the guitar..
Except Sylvain Luc
his playing is really sloppy, takes lots of risks and fall, show-off playing. has a good head for music, brilliant, but his playing is choppy. John McLaughlin does similar, like he is chopping through a jungle with a machete. But mcLaughlin has written some good works as a music writer.
I like the smooth articulation of Howard Roberts- that guy is a real thug smoooth
Matteo ua-cam.com/video/h-04tz0_cfs/v-deo.html
I'm surprised someone thinks Bireli is sloppy. He's one of the world's very best !!! How good is Snoo Lee?
Bireli is just plain awesome! Chuck Loeb
RIP to Chuck - pretty awesome too

This is for everyone; whether they realize it yet, or not.
Merci pour ce chouette bout de Bbireli
Genius! I once have had oportunity to see him live. It was epic. I've never seen anything like it.

One of the best on the planet!
O maior guitarrista do mundo virtuosicimo

Outrageous virtuosity!
15 poor people with no ears , .........these musicians are a true gift to this planet
+Kurt Wieser these are those who believe Jimmy Page is the world's best guitarist..... :D
I have to myself Lagrene as the best guitarist in any genre and Page as the best self taught rock guitarist.
Lagrene is self taught I think, I know he can't read a single note and doesn't know what he's playing, ALL by ear, crazy dude :D
It's hard to believe he is self taught 'cause his father and mother were guitarrists. But I do think he's ear taught, that is, he doesn't read notes at all. I'm not very sure. Lets search for that info.
Jj Coz Yeah maybe you're right, any news from google? :)
2 killers, and a guy from another planet ! I'm so glad to be a contemporary of probably one of the greatest guitar geniuses EVER, and to have seen him already 3 times live !
Almost saw him in Lincoln Center but he stood us up. Replaced by Frank Vignola.
No doubt; One of the best guitar players of Europe. listen to the piece "SMILE", recorded on the festival of Marciac, and you will be convinced.
Anywhere on the planet!
Birelì is one of those rare people with such a talent and a creatrive soul that defies time.
Been seriously practicing for 30 years here. I'm lucky if I reach 20 % of his genius.
Yeah, I like it. Will never play this fast but I like the whole package, you guys.
j'adore merci jj
Stupendo , si può dire solo una cosa . GRANDISSIMO !!!!
B is one of the world's best natural musicians..no doubt!
je m'en lasserai jamais

Yamaha AE-1200s!!! Great BIRELI!
May be the most fluid jazz guitarist I've ever listened to!

He is Amazing.
a great Jazz guitarist
@highlandbrian I was sitting there and believe me, apart from that solo part, the concert was excellent, and definitely not flooded with fast scales... His slow playing was absolutely heartfelt and really did swing!
my fav guitarist !
Just Nuages is enough to blow my mind up. OMG he's a f*** monster! Unbelievable!
If I were to guess, I would say that this man has mastered the fretboard.
BIRELI ! GEORGE BENSON AND PAT MARTINO MUST BE WELL PLEASE WITH YOU. 'DONNA LEE' IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PLAY ON THE GUITAR AND YOU PLAYED IT WITH SUCH EASE. I AM AMAZED, WOW!

Benson is still not appreciated enough.
@@jamesnorton7601 Multiple grammy winner Benson is a flat out beast I didn't mean to dismiss Benson's greatness by praising this guy.
@@boreed5734 I know guy. The fact that people are aware of Birelli and George means they have an understanding of what a world class player is.
where are your metal gods now? :D
M. Moreira

Augusto dos Anjos Violao 7 cordas :D
Extraordinairy.
The lick from 1:09 to 1:11 seemed to contain about 400 notes. What a lick.
What freaking ARTISTRY!
How do people dislike this?!?!?
first time I heard him was at this concert, circa 93 or 95
Seeing him play an archtop, I immediately think of Joe Pass. Pass must have met Bireli. I wonder what they thought of each other's playing. I'm certain Pass is among Bireli's influences - but what did Pass make of Bireli's incredible genius and virtuosity!? I hope they met each other, spoke with each other and maybe even played together.
First one with the trio is Donna Lee

BIRELI IS HUMAN ????? GODDDDDDDDDD !!
Natural Genius!
Try again BL was guesting on super Flamenco talent Tomatito tune, I thought how'd T get George Benson on this cut. Awesome then awesomer now!! I'd kill for half of his knowledge & abilities WOW!!! Is right.
@highlandbrian You got a giant case of Sour Grapes brother.
Safe to say he knows how to play a C major scale. ;-)
I think he played a J scale!
Why Dont You Post Your playing so we can see what you have?
haha.....and not only c major scale! & for sure any scale!
He can play the Richter scale too
that's not even the key of the tune. I don't understand what you trying to insinuate.
Yamaha Ae1200s
Thats a very articulate reply!
It´s so fucking beautiful!
Nuages. Aouch : merci !!
This is a fantastic version of Nuages. Django Reinhard was a Genius.
3:00 tell me that's not Phil Jackson, head coach of the Chicago Bulls in the 90's. If it's a different man, it's his doppelgänger 😳
3:02
"Jesse, we have some jazz to do"
+Lucas Morillo hahah what an abrupt way to finish it
Wow
the best
