I love this! My good friend is from Laos. We have loved eating her food over the years and have started cooking many dishes in our home. We have also loved going to Lao New Year with them and experiencing that as well. I make sticky rice, larb, papaya salad, red curry and Bun Thit Nuong in my home. I know one of those is Viet not Lao/thai but we love all the asian inspired foods. We will come check you guys out!❤
As the world gets more and more globalized & nationalities intertwine - it's really the future of all cuisines. Authenticity will always have it's place, but melding cultures and flavors is where it's at.
What do you mean future?? lol That’s been going on everywhere else in the country for over 40-50 years it’s just Texas late for these fusion food. I notice Texans don’t like to experience and step out of the box.
Very Lao and proud! Thank you to the chef and Fort Worth star telegram for highlighting bold Lao and funky flavors that’s true to our culture. It’s so beautiful to see the community come so far and see that our food has always been so delicious and amazing. Keep up the great work and I hope to visit your eatery soon 🥹💛
So proud of you for embracing your culture and spreading your cuisine!!! Keep moving forward my friend! May you always be blessed with good business! I know your family are proud!
Thank you so much for sharing this story and experience! I'm Lao/Laotian and have nearly identical experiences growing up in a predominantly non-Asian community. I shared this with my daughter and seeing where you are now is so motivational!
My son is half Lao nd Thai I love the culture very respectful people.. nd the food is out of this world I love papaya salad with grilled chicken nd sticky rice yummy
Ik how he feels when he talks about how the southeast asian countries surrounding Laos looked down on us. Growing up in California I could never fit in with the Thai, Viet, or Filipinos bc of the same issues. Now that Laos has been gaining some recognition via food and culture, I've noticed a lot of the other cultures that didn't really accept us are now wanting credit for some of our stuff
Didn’t know he was Lao. I had no idea that Goldees was serving Lao sausages and sticky rice too now? I also smoke Lao sausages and I just wouldn’t have it any other way.
Just stay true to yourself and your roots and culture and you cant go wrong. Wish nothing but the best for you, keep doing what you love i can see your passion for your food 🙏
Lao food is actually good. For me growing in Thailand never seen anybody look down to Laos because we always think Laos as a brother. And they are really nice.
Good job proud of you. Thank you for putting our country on the map. I will need to come and visit your restaurant. Food looks delicious. It’s awesome to see others enjoying our food.
I grew up with quite a few lao here in California. And man out all Asians, Lao people have the best BBQ. Wish he we had BBQ spots here like Texas has. BBQ is my favorite food no matter which culture its comes from.
While I haven't tried food from Laos, I'm impressed that the decided to implement his dream of putting the food out for people to try it. From the size of the crowd lining it up, it appears he's doing good. I hope he continues that success and keeps spreading his cuisine throughout the state. Keep doing well.
👍🏼 nothing against Laos. Not ever heard anyone say anything bad about Lao. (Had family speak badly of Koreans - who I have no problem with. Been to Korea)
Might be the stigma of colorism from back in the days of the refugee camps, my mom talks about this but we don’t experience that anymore. I definitely agree with your family, I had very few positive experiences with Korean people as well. Taking Korean in college for 2 years was one of the worst school experiences I’ve ever had because the Korean students were bullies. They called all of the SE Asian students jungle Asians. It was one of the very few times I’ve felt so much shame for being Lao.
Love love what you are doing!! Yes introduce our food and culture as that is what i am trying to do with my little restaurant. Biggest congratulations from Houston and good luck with everything! I will hopefully one day be able to come and support! 🎉
Keep educating and spreading that Asian love, man. I would die for a Lao sausage made by Goldee’s right now lol. Lime leaf is one of the world’s best ingredients, the haters are missing out lol.
Sticky rice to Lao Cuisine is what the baguette is to French cuisine. Both these cuisines can be seen across multiple countries where they have left or brought their influence. Sticky rice is synonymous with Lao cuisine.
Great video! As I was watching, I was wishing you good luck and success with your restaurant. Seeing that you are in Texas, I was thinking that you'd probably be down south, towards San Antonio or Houston.......too far for me to travel, since I'm in Haltom City. But I was very happy to see a mention of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram at the end of the video. I googled your location and turns out your about 15 miles away in the Kennedale area. I'm looking forward to visiting your restaurant next weekend!
Keep it up! The world should know of Lao cuisine and culture. Slowly but they will. As for “looking down by other Asian ethnic groups”, I am Vietnamese, in my early 60’s and , I do understand what you meant. I know some of my people, usually older generations, do look down on Laotian, Hmong, Burmese people. Not much from the younger people these days. Keep your head up. You are doing great!
I'm from Vietnam and grew up with a lot of friends from Laos. They're good family-oriented and loyal people.
