Michael, I love your posts! Just took care of my own antifreeze on my 2014 Cruze,, and I’m a 63 year old woman! Talk about empowerment! The only hard part was removing the little yellow plug. Lost my favorite chubby Phillips in the process, somewhere down the engine rabbit hole. Used a longer-handled Phillips and it worked OK; plug’s just in a bad spot. Your other instruction about making sure the engine is stone-cold before you begin is VITAL. You explain things so well step-by-step that even us old broads get it! Thanks again.

only downside on the 14's, we don't get that nice digital display of the coolant temp. just the gauge. and good ole GM engineered it so as long as the coolant is within the "operating temp range" it never moves. needle won't move up until the temp gets above about 245.

Hey, I just wanted to say THANK YOU to you for this excellent video. I'm no car expert, and It is getting cold now, here in Bucks County PA and my 2012 Cruze had no heat until about 10 miles into any trip. I followed your instructions and had heat within 2 minutes, saving me a costly trip to my auto repair guy. Much appreciated! Now I know to regularly check the coolant, like I do with the oil. I have owned mostly new cars, so this was never an issue, but the Cruze is 10 years old now. Thanks again.
Appreciate the step-by-step explanation. As I've driven a '65 Ford Fairlane into the year 2004 when I got my new car -a '72 VW Super Beetle. My experience is not an 06 Malibu with ECM, sideways engine- it makes my head spin. I agree with Michelle's post. A friend of mine works for a GM dealer so I hit him up for some info. He stated that these 1.4s are real pain in the butt for cooling troubles. He gave me a trick to help move the air through the system. They put a funnel on the large line that leaves the resorvoir and fill the system ( which is the high point in the system ). They also use vacumm to remove air pockets.

Thank you so much! I just got my oil changed last month and they normally always check the fluids of everything. So I never pay attention to it. For the past few weeks the fan has constantly been kicking on and even staying on for a long time after the car is turned off. But didn't think anything of it. Then all of a sudden last night was making this awful noise. Then on the screen it said shutting off the ac because of something. So I just turned around and went home. googled a bunch of stuff until google showed me this video. Ran out to the car and ofc it was completely dry. Today I followed all the steps you did and it's running just fine. Drove it a bunch today and the fan wasn't constantly on & shut off after turning the car off. I'm going to start checking it all myself instead of relying on the oil change people.
My spouse is a master mechanic. But this 2016 cruze is not familiar to him, t y for your help. Fixing this awful cruze for our disabled neighbor, she will be so happy!

So my car was idling really loud and all of a sudden. I received a letter from General Motors about a recall on my engine and it stated basically the same issue it idling loud and that the engine can develop cracks in the diaphragm. I called my local Chevy dealership and scheduled an appointment and they said if it isn’t the recall issue that they would charge me $129 for the diagnostic. Three or four days later my car started overheating and actually shut off . I saw that my coolant reservoir was empty and I decided to Google how to properly put cooler in and found your video. The only thing that wasn’t helpful was the toggling through menu to find the coolant temperature . I did not have that option. I drove around for 20 minutes and the temp on the dash stayed as suggested. Thank you sir because my mom was like you need to get a man to fix your car. Technically I did through this video, but I did it thanks to you .🥰

Can’t thank you enough for this video man. Noticed my coolant was literally empty when I lost heat a couple days ago. Was able to refill the system correctly and identify the leak. Replacement parts are on order and you’ve saved me a ton of money. Cheers.

I wish I had seen a video like yours back around 2017 when I changed the coolant on our 2012 Cruze. I followed all the steps shown in another video back then and I’m pretty sure I didn’t do one or more steps that you showed because about 4 months later the water pump started leaking. It cost me about $700 to have that fixed at a shop. On any car, checking your fluids regularly is critical . Even on a new car, have a look around every couple of weeks, check the oil level, brake fluid, coolant and if you have a Cruze, Sonic, Trax or Buick Encore, watch your video where you point out all the places to look for coolant leaks. The coolant reservoir where the two hoses come out, the plastic fitting on the drivers side of the engine, the thermostat and any of the hoses are places to keep an eye on. Someone, it may have been you suggested using the Doorman version of that plastic fitting on the drivers side of the engine because it has been designed to be “ tougher”. This isn’t always the case with Doorman parts but apparently in this part it is built better as well as that metal line that runs behind the exhaust manifold and feeds oil to the turbo. The Doorman one has two rubber O-rings on one end where leaks are common. I was told that the coolant bleeder screw that you showed in this video doesn’t have to be completely removed and mine “ bled” with the screw still being in a couple turns. Also, there is a drain peacock on the bottom of the radiator on the earlier Cruzes and other 1.4 turbo vehicles but for some reason GM stopped putting those on them several years later. P.s. my 20 yr old son drives our 2019 Buick Encore and I have told him to watch the temp gauge as well as to check the oil level regularly because of the PCV issues. GM really should have fixed the problems with the PCV, intake, and coolant issues by the time our 2019 Encore was built and there should be an extended warranty coverage on these parts and repair.

You are spot on, the Dorman reservoir is a bit tougher and more reliable however not all Dorman parts are. We have come across a few Dorman parts that we feel aren’t as up-to-par as the OEM. As you also mentioned, checking your engine fluid levels and checking for leaks on a routine basis is a very good practice. This allows you to catch a low fluid level or leak at its earlier stage and can allow you to fix it before it becomes a huge issue. When I turn my heat on the temperature gauge goes up. Once I turn the heat off the gauge goes down. I’m going to have my coolant checked. This video is helpful! Thank You for sharing!!

You have a lot of great videos. We have a 2013 cruze lt and they are pretty good cars but they are a cooling system nightmare. Once something starts leaking you may as well overhaul the entire cooling system

What should I do on 2015 cruze? My coolant reservoir was very low so I topped up the coolant reservoir without opening the bleeder screw. I put the cap on and after a few miles of driving my car is overheating and I have the coolant bubbling in the reservoir. The temp gauge goes about 1/4 of the way cold. Do I have air in my system? Should I squeeze the hoses? Should I try to open the bleeder or should I park on a hill and open the reservoir tank and run the car? The coolant is to the full line so I can’t add anymore. I took it to a mechanic and he said he ran 2 diags on it so head gasket and stuff should be ok. And if I drive it a few miles and it over heats and coolant bubbles.
Good morning ☕️ It’s likely that you have a fluid level issue and the coolant is not flowing through system properly…thus exceeding it’s normal operating temperature and boiling. Following the steps in this video should get your coolant system back working properly and within the correct temperature. 👍🧰
@@DIYwithMichaelBordersThank you, did what your video recommends. It is not bubbling that much now after my long test drive. My only concern is the fan never came on, drove the car for almost 2 hrs. The temperature gauge remained 1 tick below the half way mark the whole time, once I put the reservoir cap on & engine had reached temperature. On my Cruze I don’t have the coolant temp menu, couldn’t find it. But the temp remained constant, even tried putting the heat all the way up.
@@TechTronics7 That’s a great update, moving in the right direction. Awesome job getting the system back to proper temperatures. The fan will remain off until the engine exceeds a high temp…which sounds like it’s not because your coolant system is performing as designed. Keep a close eye on it in coming days/weeks. 😎👍🧰

Great detailed information, my hot engine light was on last night so i am adding antifreeze now, i have to find that valve to see if i have a leak, or i might just do it and look for leaks in the hoses without opening the valve thank you

I’m away from home and my cruze is overheating. I’m sure it’s a leak cuz my coolant reservoir is empty and it had coolant a month or so ago. My question is, do I have to unscrew that part in the front cuz I don’t have a screwdriver and I need to add coolant right now….
Thanks for watching, any update? If your system still has coolant inside system, it’s safe to add more coolant to reservoir without removing the plastic bleeder screw and bleeding system. Two very important things to note. 1. Do not unscrew the cap from the reservoir until you have allowed the engine to cool off in the off position for a minimum of 3 hours. This will alleviate super hot coolant from exploding out of the pressurized system and burning you. 2. Make sure the coolant you are adding is the proper premixed coolant recommended by GM, which can be found in your owners manual in your glove box. 😎👍
Great video. I am actually currently doing this on my 2012 chevy cruze. I noticed that the coolant temp is struggling to get up to 250 . it fluctuates between 209 - 215. Radiator fan has not come on and it has been about 20mins on idle. any idea what can cause this?
Hey Mike. 2013 Chevy Cruze owner here and dealing with coolant issues, as usual. One question for you - what does it mean if my temperature gauge goes down to the usual middle point when the car is running but as soon as I turn my heater on inside my car while I'm driving, the temperature gauge starts going back upwards towards cold? No messages popping up on the dash and no check engine light.

Your videos are just excellent, thanks a ton for doing this. Sorry but very long and detailed question for you. My 2014 Cruze ECO was losing coolant and I found the tank was leaking (coolant dripping from underneath it) and I replaced it with the Dorman and now that is dry. However, I was surprised to find the coolant level is still going down a bit. The engine runs very smoothly all the time and there are no other signs of a coolant leak anywhere and I have been monitoring the coolant temperature on the OBDII port which does not exceed 221 degrees even after driving up big hills in my area. I was/am hoping I had some air in the system but very worried it is head gasket and followed your procedure in this video (running without the cap on to evacuate the air) and the coolant boiled once it got to (coincidentally) 221 degrees. I did similar test with the cap on and the fan came on about at 221 degrees (and the temp would peak at 221 degrees). However this time the fan did not come on but I also had to shut the car off. I don't think my thermostat is stuck as I would expect to overheat while driving in these hills. Also, as I ran the car with the cap off, the coolant level rose (from ~quarter of an inch below max line to ~quarter inch above) as the car warmed up. Given that I am hoping the air that was in the system is now out of the system but I also still can hear some gurgling over the engine when I shut off the car when hot, so I am scared to run the car too much more if I do have a head gasket leak. Also, no white smoke in tail pipe and coolant looks perfectly orange. Should I get a pressure tester or am I stuck going back to dealer?

As the engine warms up, the coolant begins to heat up which leads to liquid expansion. When this takes place, coolant begins to flow to the reservoir tank. As engine cools down, the coolant condenses & begins to flow back to radiator. During this process, the coolant itself may gurgle & bubble...which surprisingly is normal. Since your engine is not overheating, we think you’re spot on when you mention your thermostat is operating as designed. Back to the coolant, just like any other liquid... it can’t evaporate over time however at a very slow rate... since coolant is specifically designed to not evaporate...🤔 With that said, if you are losing a large amount of coolant in a short period of time... coolant may be sneaking past the internal engine seals and being burned off and exhausted out your exhaust pipe. Unfortunately this is a very common issue with the Chevy Cruze. Depending on the condition of the internal seals will depend on the repairs being friendly or...well...not so friendly. Please keep us posted on your project. 😎👍🔧🔩
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thanks again for your expert help. So here is my update, I have driven the car about 100 miles and the coolant level appears to be stable now. Previous to doing your procedure for filling the coolant (after replacing my leaking reservoir tank) I definitely added a quart of coolant so keeping my fingers crossed that I just had a ton of air in the system that needed to be evacuated.

I followed your instruction and replaced the thermostat/housing and then the coolant. After topping off to the level, I drove (might be 10 miles), came back and looked at the coolant tank. The coolant level had receded to the hose-connection point. One good thing is that my Engine Light which was "on" prior to replacing the thermostat is off now. My question, shall I follow your procedure to top off the coolant or just remove the reservoir cap and fill it to the mark ? Thank you.
Thanks for watching & great question. If there is still coolant present in the tank however it’s just below the fill parameters, you can just remove cap & add coolant. We recommend letting engine sit off for a few hours to allow it to cool down & release pressure. 😎👍🔧🔩

Thanks for your helpful videos and for responding to everyone’s comments! I just discovered that I have a coolant leak- my fluids were topped off two weeks ago and my coolant level is already low in the reservoir. Until I can get it in at the mechanic, I’m topping off. If I do it first thing in the morning, can I just unscrew the top and fill- do I need to also do the unscrewing other cap/letting it run/looking for leak part? Thanks!!

Great question & as long as the engine has been off for at least 3 hours, you can safely open & remove cap from reservoir to add coolant. In order to check for coolant leaks you will need to start engine and allow the engine to heat up to normal operating temperatures. Can i do all these sames steps you talked about verbatim with only water? Because i just bought coolant and it just leaked all out so i am gonna put water in until i can go get another bottle of coolant. I plan to het the good one the red one this time not the yellow cheap one but my coolant has been leaking out wo much i dont wana waste expensive product jntil i figure out what is going on. Two more questions, does the Bars stop leak/radiator sealant do more harm than good? I feel like after I added it all the sudden my car started overheating more frequently compared to before i poured it in. 2nd question can your hoses or radiator be clogged? How can u tell? WhhOne hose feels hot full swollen and the liquid inside doesnt seem to have anyhwere to go. (This is the thick upper or lower? Not sure.. radiator hose coming from the drivers side going into radiator
Hey there, I followed all the steps and at the moment where I waited for the coolant to go through the system with the cap open the volume increased instead of decreasing. Odd. Do you think there might have been coolant still in the line? *update! The reservoir ended up overfilling and even bubbling up sending coolant everywhere while the cap was open when I was waiting for those 10-15 minutes! Had to run and turn the car off!

The water pump is a GM recall part and can be replaced at your local Chevy dealership for 100% free. We definitely recommend calling your local Chevy dealership to see if your vehicle qualifies. @@tonerc.8191 Thanks for the reply & it is still a recalled part however there is a mileage cut off. Not sure exactly the cutoff as they differ for each Cruze year & serial #’s. If you have no signs of leaks, it’s very possible that your coolant is sneaking past the internal engine seals and being burned off in the engine and exhausted out your exhaust pipe. Unfortunately this is a common cause that Cruze drivers are experiencing. Hope this helps. 😎👍🔧🔧
I have a 2020 Chevy Sonic hatchback le that had the the entire coolant system and hoses replaced. No problems for a good while . Engine light came on this am and have hardly any antifreeze. Help. Will go back to dealer but guessing a leak ? I haven't ever heard of that plastic screw release before does my car have that?

If it was recent, it would be a good idea to return to the dealer and explain the repairs didn’t fix problem. However if you feel more comfortable inspecting for leaks on your own, you can add coolant to system as shown in this video and look for a leak while engine is running and pressurizing. ☕️🧰
@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thanks. Maybe 6 months ago the whole system was replaced. I watched your video and filled my antifreeze and will check this am if it's still ok. I will surely go to the dealer if adding coolant doesn't help and I don't see a leak. I do have an appointment at local mechanic this afternoon to check to see why the engine light is on. I was under the impression that once problem is fixed the engine light would go off by itself after a short period of time but mechanic told me it has to be reset by them? So I asked to have them hook up to diagnostics machine to see what it definitely is. I am only limited on my car knowledge. Thanks much
I have a Chevy Cavalier that was running around 195 since the day I got the car. A few weeks ago it started running passed the midpoint about 2 lines down. With a scan tool its saying engine temp is 221. I noticed this issue happened as soon as I began using my heater since it is getting colder here in Georgia. I have done a coolant flush, new thermostat, water pump was done during the summer, and new serpentine belt. After doing some research when I changed my water pump in the summer I never did bleed the air in the system afterwards. I also refilled lost coolant with the light green Universal kind. Is it the air that caused this issue?

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I have done a pressure test and left it there for about an hr and it seemed to maintain pressure at the 15 PSI mark. After seeing your video I dont think I am bleeding the air all the way. I also noticed that when you cut the heater on you only turn it once. I have been turning to max setting. Does that affect the bleeding process? Also is it important to put the cap on with the engine running after all air is bled? I have been waiting til it cooled down to put the cap back on.
Hello I have a 2014 Cruze I'm not sure y it's over heating all I know is the reservoir starts to bubble then it over heats I looked all over I don't see any leaks. I think I might be adding the coolant wrong I didn't know about the bleeder valve. I think maybe there's air in my coolant system but I'm not sure what do u think ?

I noticed my car was heating up and a fan was going off in the engine. I checked and was low on coolant. I put some up and did what you said in the video, thank you!! However, 2 weeks later it was doing the same thing, I'm afraid it might be something bigger..

@@basketball_training2022 Thanks for watching. In that case, it just didn’t allow you to fill it in an efficient manner and allow coolant to push the air out. After engine start, you will want to allow the air to make its way to the reservoir and get removed from system. Once no more bubbles, you can secure reservoir cap and allow system to pressurize and check for leaks. 👍🧰

Hi, it's my first time about to add some coolant to my Chevy Sonic 2015, it only has 30k miles. I noticed that the coolant tank/liquid is about 3/4ths under the 'recommended' line. I just want to add a little bit. Do I just go in there and add the coolant, do I have to do anything else afterwards?? I'm just paranoid I'm going to mess up my first car. Lol..

Michael, thank you for the great videos. I do have one question for you. I what is the "normal" coolant operating temperature of the 1.4 liter Cruze engine? I have just replaced the thermostat housing on my Cruze for the second time. Both times I followed the instructions for refilling the system. I'll admit I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the temperatures the first time but I have the second time. My engine seems to be running between 223º and 230º. This seems a bit high to me.
Thanks for watching, normal operating temperatures for a 1.4l Cruze engine is 190*-225*. You are well within normal operating temperatures with 223*-230* as long as your Thermostat is working properly and allowing coolant to flow throughout engine for cooling. Your radiator fans will also turn on once thermostat opens and allows coolant flow throughout engine. Once thermostat opens up, it will allow coolant to flow and lower engine temperatures back to within 190*-225*. As you’re driving car, the engine temp needle must remain ever-so-slightly below the 1/2 point. That will be normal operating and safe driving temperatures. 😎👍

I drive for ride-share. My Holden Captiva, I don’t find any coolant leak throughout the day, I check it thoroughly. But when I park it, at night it leaks and in morning I find there is lots of coolant on the ground. Why doesn’t it leak when it is hot? Thanks in advance.
Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. Great question and hopefully we can help. The coolant system is a pressurized system. Once engine starts, the system begins to pressurize. As the engine heats up, all parts throughout the system begin to operate and guide coolant through engine. If engine is running for a short period of time, it’s common for certain parts within the system to not operate…ex: Thermostat not opening and allowing coolant through remaining portion of engine. Once engine turns off, it has an aggressive amount of pressure inside system and in your case…it’s beginning to leak out of the reservoir vent…or it’s likely that’s happening. Do you notice any coolant leaking out of your reservoir vent while engine is running or after engine is turned off after driving for awhile…? @@DIYwithMichaelBorders it is leaking somewhere near where the hose pipe from the engine meets the radiator, so I put metal clamp to stop the leak but now the plastic part of radiator appears to be leaking! But that doesn't happen when daytime I keep checking the same area where it leaks at night, I drive 150- 200 km on average regularly.. It only happens at night when it is cold.... Car has done 300,000 +kms...
@@sahilsangwan6371 Thanks for the update, you may need to install a new hose. Unfortunately over time, the hose can harden and warp…witch makes it very difficult for the clamp to secure itself in a way to create a water-tight seal. 👍
So i took my car to the dealership and they rplace the thermostat and the water pump. However, when i took my car back, drove it for atleast 20 miles. When i turn of my engine, oppened the hood the coolant was boiling. Is that normal?

I’ve done everything like you said ran the car for 30 minutes it got up to normal operating range but fan never came on check fuse box everything looked ok fan will come on with ac but not with just engine running I’m at a loss

I noticed the heater was not working when the cap was off, but as soon as I put that cap back on and the system pressurized it worked properly. Is that normal? The radiator fan never turned on for the engine but it was a cool day and I believe it just didn't get hot enough.
Good morning, sometimes this will happen due to lack of pressure. Once engine is running, the coolant system begins to build its required internal pressure in order to operate as designed and cool the engine…and assist in the operation of the heating/ventilation system. You will follow this procedure when fully draining system and filling from completely empty up to proper quantity within fill parameters of reservoir. When just adding coolant, as you are in your case, we recommend having the engine off for a minimum of three hours, followed by opening reservoir cap and adding fluid until it reaches within fill parameters.
My little hose coming from the reservoir tank travels back behind the valve cover instead of going right to the bottom right where yours goes. I’m hoping my leak is the same deal. I’m losing coolant but never see puddles.
Great videos , got a Astra GTC 1.4T , had to renew the degassing hose o-ring as was leaking slightly, found it difficult to bleed system, opened yellow valve ,coolant flows ok, middle gauge temperature but fan only comes on with a/c no overheating but rad feels cool.

I am getting a hissing sound at the coolant reservoir tank even after driving around 15-30 min and sometimes the coolant comes out of the overflow hole(beside the cap) Any suggestions?what could be problem and please let me know any solution for this problem. First of all. I wish I had seen these videos before I had to refill my coolant. However recently a hose in our 2012 Chevy Cruze broke and coolant was leaking out. Leading it to over heat. After fixing it. Noticed that our coolant temperature being about 195 degrees to 220. My question is, is that an okay temperature of it is close to 220? Because my gf and I are moving from California to Georgia in 2 weeks and want to make sure we can make it without overheating.

Once your engine heats up to approximately 215-225*....your Thermostat opens up which allows coolant to continue to flow through the remaining system...which keeps your engine temperature within its normal operating range. Most important thing to monitor is the actual needle. Your engine temperature needle should always always always stay below the 1/2 way point... if it goes above 1/2, something is wrong. Joshws Thanks for watching & great question. This will depend on which coolant you purchase. The coolant shown in this video is already mixed 50-50 which does not require any additional water to be added nor any additional mixing. In the event that you purchase a full bottle of coolant that is NOT already premixed, you will be required to add water and you will have to follow the mixing directions to make sure you have mixed the proper quantity of water to coolant. We always recommend taking a look at your owners manual and purchasing the exact coolant that your manufacturer recommends... in our case with our Chevy Cruz, it was the GM December-cool. Michael, I love your posts! Just took care of my own antifreeze on my 2014 Cruze,, and I’m a 63 year old woman! Talk about empowerment! The only hard part was removing the little yellow plug. Lost my favorite chubby Phillips in the process, somewhere down the engine rabbit hole. Used a longer-handled Phillips and it worked OK; plug’s just in a bad spot. Your other instruction about making sure the engine is stone-cold before you begin is VITAL. You explain things so well step-by-step that even us old broads get it! Thanks again.

only downside on the 14's, we don't get that nice digital display of the coolant temp. just the gauge. and good ole GM engineered it so as long as the coolant is within the "operating temp range" it never moves. needle won't move up until the temp gets above about 245.
@iseekthetruth as well with the 13’s. Luckily I have an obd reader that shows the temp on my phone so I just drove around with that running
I have a 16 Cruze Limited which is a carryover model from 2015 and it’s the same.

Hey, I just wanted to say THANK YOU to you for this excellent video. I'm no car expert, and It is getting cold now, here in Bucks County PA and my 2012 Cruze had no heat until about 10 miles into any trip. I followed your instructions and had heat within 2 minutes, saving me a costly trip to my auto repair guy. Much appreciated! Now I know to regularly check the coolant, like I do with the oil. I have owned mostly new cars, so this was never an issue, but the Cruze is 10 years old now. Thanks again.

A friend of mine works for a GM dealer so I hit him up for some info. He stated that these 1.4s are real pain in the butt for cooling troubles. He gave me a trick to help move the air through the system. They put a funnel on the large line that leaves the resorvoir and fill the system ( which is the high point in the system ). They also use vacumm to remove air pockets.

Thank you so much! I just got my oil changed last month and they normally always check the fluids of everything. So I never pay attention to it. For the past few weeks the fan has constantly been kicking on and even staying on for a long time after the car is turned off. But didn't think anything of it. Then all of a sudden last night was making this awful noise. Then on the screen it said shutting off the ac because of something. So I just turned around and went home. googled a bunch of stuff until google showed me this video. Ran out to the car and ofc it was completely dry. Today I followed all the steps you did and it's running just fine. Drove it a bunch today and the fan wasn't constantly on & shut off after turning the car off. I'm going to start checking it all myself instead of relying on the oil change people.

What you do
So my car was idling really loud and all of a sudden. I received a letter from General Motors about a recall on my engine and it stated basically the same issue it idling loud and that the engine can develop cracks in the diaphragm. I called my local Chevy dealership and scheduled an appointment and they said if it isn’t the recall issue that they would charge me $129 for the diagnostic. Three or four days later my car started overheating and actually shut off . I saw that my coolant reservoir was empty and I decided to Google how to properly put cooler in and found your video. The only thing that wasn’t helpful was the toggling through menu to find the coolant temperature . I did not have that option. I drove around for 20 minutes and the temp on the dash stayed as suggested. Thank you sir because my mom was like you need to get a man to fix your car. Technically I did through this video, but I did it thanks to you .🥰

I wish I had seen a video like yours back around 2017 when I changed the coolant on our 2012 Cruze. I followed all the steps shown in another video back then and I’m pretty sure I didn’t do one or more steps that you showed because about 4 months later the water pump started leaking. It cost me about $700 to have that fixed at a shop. On any car, checking your fluids regularly is critical . Even on a new car, have a look around every couple of weeks, check the oil level, brake fluid, coolant and if you have a Cruze, Sonic, Trax or Buick Encore, watch your video where you point out all the places to look for coolant leaks. The coolant reservoir where the two hoses come out, the plastic fitting on the drivers side of the engine, the thermostat and any of the hoses are places to keep an eye on. Someone, it may have been you suggested using the Doorman version of that plastic fitting on the drivers side of the engine because it has been designed to be “ tougher”. This isn’t always the case with Doorman parts but apparently in this part it is built better as well as that metal line that runs behind the exhaust manifold and feeds oil to the turbo. The Doorman one has two rubber O-rings on one end where leaks are common. I was told that the coolant bleeder screw that you showed in this video doesn’t have to be completely removed and mine “ bled” with the screw still being in a couple turns. Also, there is a drain peacock on the bottom of the radiator on the earlier Cruzes and other 1.4 turbo vehicles but for some reason GM stopped putting those on them several years later. P.s. my 20 yr old son drives our 2019 Buick Encore and I have told him to watch the temp gauge as well as to check the oil level regularly because of the PCV issues. GM really should have fixed the problems with the PCV, intake, and coolant issues by the time our 2019 Encore was built and there should be an extended warranty coverage on these parts and repair.

You are spot on, the Dorman reservoir is a bit tougher and more reliable however not all Dorman parts are.
We have come across a few Dorman parts that we feel aren’t as up-to-par as the OEM.
As you also mentioned, checking your engine fluid levels and checking for leaks on a routine basis is a very good practice. This allows you to catch a low fluid level or leak at its earlier stage and can allow you to fix it before it becomes a huge issue.

When I turn my heat on the temperature gauge goes up. Once I turn the heat off the gauge goes down. I’m going to have my coolant checked. This video is helpful! Thank You for sharing!!

You have a lot of great videos. We have a 2013 cruze lt and they are pretty good cars but they are a cooling system nightmare. Once something starts leaking you may as well overhaul the entire cooling system

What should I do on 2015 cruze? My coolant reservoir was very low so I topped up the coolant reservoir without opening the bleeder screw. I put the cap on and after a few miles of driving my car is overheating and I have the coolant bubbling in the reservoir. The temp gauge goes about 1/4 of the way cold. Do I have air in my system? Should I squeeze the hoses? Should I try to open the bleeder or should I park on a hill and open the reservoir tank and run the car? The coolant is to the full line so I can’t add anymore. I took it to a mechanic and he said he ran 2 diags on it so head gasket and stuff should be ok. And if I drive it a few miles and it over heats and coolant bubbles.

It’s likely that you have a fluid level issue and the coolant is not flowing through system properly…thus exceeding it’s normal operating temperature and boiling.
Following the steps in this video should get your coolant system back working properly and within the correct temperature. 👍🧰
@@DIYwithMichaelBordersThank you, did what your video recommends. It is not bubbling that much now after my long test drive. My only concern is the fan never came on, drove the car for almost 2 hrs. The temperature gauge remained 1 tick below the half way mark the whole time, once I put the reservoir cap on & engine had reached temperature. On my Cruze I don’t have the coolant temp menu, couldn’t find it. But the temp remained constant, even tried putting the heat all the way up.

That’s a great update, moving in the right direction. Awesome job getting the system back to proper temperatures. The fan will remain off until the engine exceeds a high temp…which sounds like it’s not because your coolant system is performing as designed.

I’m away from home and my cruze is overheating. I’m sure it’s a leak cuz my coolant reservoir is empty and it had coolant a month or so ago. My question is, do I have to unscrew that part in the front cuz I don’t have a screwdriver and I need to add coolant right now….
Thanks for watching, any update? If your system still has coolant inside system, it’s safe to add more coolant to reservoir without removing the plastic bleeder screw and bleeding system.
Two very important things to note.
1. Do not unscrew the cap from the reservoir until you have allowed the engine to cool off in the off position for a minimum of 3 hours. This will alleviate super hot coolant from exploding out of the pressurized system and burning you.
2. Make sure the coolant you are adding is the proper premixed coolant recommended by GM, which can be found in your owners manual in your glove box.

I noticed that the coolant temp is struggling to get up to 250 . it fluctuates between 209 - 215. Radiator fan has not come on and it has been about 20mins on idle.

One question for you - what does it mean if my temperature gauge goes down to the usual middle point when the car is running but as soon as I turn my heater on inside my car while I'm driving, the temperature gauge starts going back upwards towards cold? No messages popping up on the dash and no check engine light.

Your videos are just excellent, thanks a ton for doing this. Sorry but very long and detailed question for you. My 2014 Cruze ECO was losing coolant and I found the tank was leaking (coolant dripping from underneath it) and I replaced it with the Dorman and now that is dry. However, I was surprised to find the coolant level is still going down a bit. The engine runs very smoothly all the time and there are no other signs of a coolant leak anywhere and I have been monitoring the coolant temperature on the OBDII port which does not exceed 221 degrees even after driving up big hills in my area. I was/am hoping I had some air in the system but very worried it is head gasket and followed your procedure in this video (running without the cap on to evacuate the air) and the coolant boiled once it got to (coincidentally) 221 degrees. I did similar test with the cap on and the fan came on about at 221 degrees (and the temp would peak at 221 degrees). However this time the fan did not come on but I also had to shut the car off. I don't think my thermostat is stuck as I would expect to overheat while driving in these hills. Also, as I ran the car with the cap off, the coolant level rose (from ~quarter of an inch below max line to ~quarter inch above) as the car warmed up. Given that I am hoping the air that was in the system is now out of the system but I also still can hear some gurgling over the engine when I shut off the car when hot, so I am scared to run the car too much more if I do have a head gasket leak. Also, no white smoke in tail pipe and coolant looks perfectly orange. Should I get a pressure tester or am I stuck going back to dealer?

A few things come to mind. As the engine warms up, the coolant begins to heat up which leads to liquid expansion. When this takes place, coolant begins to flow to the reservoir tank.
As engine cools down, the coolant condenses & begins to flow back to radiator. During this process, the coolant itself may gurgle & bubble...which surprisingly is normal.
Since your engine is not overheating, we think you’re spot on when you mention your thermostat is operating as designed.
Back to the coolant, just like any other liquid... it can’t evaporate over time however at a very slow rate... since coolant is specifically designed to not evaporate...🤔
With that said, if you are losing a large amount of coolant in a short period of time... coolant may be sneaking past the internal engine seals and being burned off and exhausted out your exhaust pipe.
Unfortunately this is a very common issue with the Chevy Cruze. Depending on the condition of the internal seals will depend on the repairs being friendly or...well...not so friendly.

Previous to doing your procedure for filling the coolant (after replacing my leaking reservoir tank) I definitely added a quart of coolant so keeping my fingers crossed that I just had a ton of air in the system that needed to be evacuated.

How did you find the coolant temperature on the menu?
I followed your instruction and replaced the thermostat/housing and then the coolant. After topping off to the level, I drove (might be 10 miles), came back and looked at the coolant tank. The coolant level had receded to the hose-connection point. One good thing is that my Engine Light which was "on" prior to replacing the thermostat is off now. My question, shall I follow your procedure to top off the coolant or just remove the reservoir cap and fill it to the mark ? Thank you.
Thanks for watching & great question. If there is still coolant present in the tank however it’s just below the fill parameters, you can just remove cap & add coolant. We recommend letting engine sit off for a few hours to allow it to cool down & release pressure.

I just discovered that I have a coolant leak- my fluids were topped off two weeks ago and my coolant level is already low in the reservoir. Until I can get it in at the mechanic, I’m topping off. If I do it first thing in the morning, can I just unscrew the top and fill- do I need to also do the unscrewing other cap/letting it run/looking for leak part? Thanks!!

Thanks for watching & sharing your experience Emily. Great question & as long as the engine has been off for at least 3 hours, you can safely open & remove cap from reservoir to add coolant.
In order to check for coolant leaks you will need to start engine and allow the engine to heat up to normal operating temperatures. At this point you will have the best advantage to any noticeable leaks.

Can i do all these sames steps you talked about verbatim with only water? Because i just bought coolant and it just leaked all out so i am gonna put water in until i can go get another bottle of coolant. I plan to het the good one the red one this time not the yellow cheap one but my coolant has been leaking out wo much i dont wana waste expensive product jntil i figure out what is going on.
Two more questions, does the Bars stop leak/radiator sealant do more harm than good? I feel like after I added it all the sudden my car started overheating more frequently compared to before i poured it in.
2nd question can your hoses or radiator be clogged? How can u tell? WhhOne hose feels hot full swollen and the liquid inside doesnt seem to have anyhwere to go. (This is the thick upper or lower? Not sure.. radiator hose coming from the drivers side going into radiator
Hey there, I followed all the steps and at the moment where I waited for the coolant to go through the system with the cap open the volume increased instead of decreasing. Odd. Do you think there might have been coolant still in the line?
*update! The reservoir ended up overfilling and even bubbling up sending coolant everywhere while the cap was open when I was waiting for those 10-15 minutes! Had to run and turn the car off!

Thanks for watching & we hope you enjoyed the video. Boiling coolant fluid can be caused by a clog in system or failed Water Pump or Thermostat.
The water pump is a GM recall part and can be replaced at your local Chevy dealership for 100% free. We definitely recommend calling your local Chevy dealership to see if your vehicle qualifies.

Thanks for the reply & it is still a recalled part however there is a mileage cut off. Not sure exactly the cutoff as they differ for each Cruze year & serial #’s.
If you have no signs of leaks, it’s very possible that your coolant is sneaking past the internal engine seals and being burned off in the engine and exhausted out your exhaust pipe. Unfortunately this is a common cause that Cruze drivers are experiencing. Hope this helps.

I have a 2020 Chevy Sonic hatchback le that had the the entire coolant system and hoses replaced. No problems for a good while . Engine light came on this am and have hardly any antifreeze. Help. Will go back to dealer but guessing a leak ? I haven't ever heard of that plastic screw release before does my car have that?

Thanks for watching, how long ago did the coolant system parts get replaced? If it was recent, it would be a good idea to return to the dealer and explain the repairs didn’t fix problem.
However if you feel more comfortable inspecting for leaks on your own, you can add coolant to system as shown in this video and look for a leak while engine is running and pressurizing.

I will surely go to the dealer if adding coolant doesn't help and I don't see a leak. I do have an appointment at local mechanic this afternoon to check to see why the engine light is on. I was under the impression that once problem is fixed the engine light would go off by itself after a short period of time but mechanic told me it has to be reset by them? So I asked to have them hook up to diagnostics machine to see what it definitely is. I am only limited on my car knowledge. Thanks much

I have a Chevy Cavalier that was running around 195 since the day I got the car. A few weeks ago it started running passed the midpoint about 2 lines down. With a scan tool its saying engine temp is 221. I noticed this issue happened as soon as I began using my heater since it is getting colder here in Georgia. I have done a coolant flush, new thermostat, water pump was done during the summer, and new serpentine belt. After doing some research when I changed my water pump in the summer I never did bleed the air in the system afterwards. I also refilled lost coolant with the light green Universal kind. Is it the air that caused this issue?

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I have done a pressure test and left it there for about an hr and it seemed to maintain pressure at the 15 PSI mark. After seeing your video I dont think I am bleeding the air all the way. I also noticed that when you cut the heater on you only turn it once. I have been turning to max setting. Does that affect the bleeding process? Also is it important to put the cap on with the engine running after all air is bled? I have been waiting til it cooled down to put the cap back on.

Hello I have a 2014 Cruze I'm not sure y it's over heating all I know is the reservoir starts to bubble then it over heats I looked all over I don't see any leaks. I think I might be adding the coolant wrong I didn't know about the bleeder valve. I think maybe there's air in my coolant system but I'm not sure what do u think ?

I noticed my car was heating up and a fan was going off in the engine. I checked and was low on coolant. I put some up and did what you said in the video, thank you!! However, 2 weeks later it was doing the same thing, I'm afraid it might be something bigger..

We recommend inspecting the engine compartment to see if there are any noticeable signs of coolant leaks.
It’s best to have the engine running which will allow the coolant system to pressurize.

Not removing it will lead to not all coolant draining out. Your old coolant can contaminate your newly added coolant which can lead to future issues.

If I filled an empty reservoir without taking the screw out, is that bad and if so what should I do to fix it?

Thanks for watching. In that case, it just didn’t allow you to fill it in an efficient manner and allow coolant to push the air out.
After engine start, you will want to allow the air to make its way to the reservoir and get removed from system.
Once no more bubbles, you can secure reservoir cap and allow system to pressurize and check for leaks.

Hi, it's my first time about to add some coolant to my Chevy Sonic 2015, it only has 30k miles. I noticed that the coolant tank/liquid is about 3/4ths under the 'recommended' line. I just want to add a little bit. Do I just go in there and add the coolant, do I have to do anything else afterwards?? I'm just paranoid I'm going to mess up my first car. Lol..

Thanks for watching Jill, it’s not really necessary unless the belt itself is showing clear signs of wear.
If you see any minor rips, dry rotting, frays...we recommend replacing it. Hope this helps.

Thanks for watching & sharing your question. It is possible to add Coolant to engine while engine is running...HOWEVER VERY IMPORTANT....only after letting your engine sit in the off position for more than 3 hours...& then starting it.
Once your cap is secured, it will begin to pressurize. At this point, it is extremely dangerous to remove the cap due to high pressure and HOT Coolant!

Michael, thank you for the great videos. I do have one question for you. I what is the "normal" coolant operating temperature of the 1.4 liter Cruze engine? I have just replaced the thermostat housing on my Cruze for the second time. Both times I followed the instructions for refilling the system. I'll admit I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the temperatures the first time but I have the second time. My engine seems to be running between 223º and 230º. This seems a bit high to me.
Thanks for watching, normal operating temperatures for a 1.4l Cruze engine is 190*-225*.
You are well within normal operating temperatures with 223*-230* as long as your Thermostat is working properly and allowing coolant to flow throughout engine for cooling. Your radiator fans will also turn on once thermostat opens and allows coolant flow throughout engine.
Once thermostat opens up, it will allow coolant to flow and lower engine temperatures back to within 190*-225*.
As you’re driving car, the engine temp needle must remain ever-so-slightly below the 1/2 point.
That will be normal operating and safe driving temperatures. 😎👍

I drive for ride-share. My Holden Captiva, I don’t find any coolant leak throughout the day, I check it thoroughly.
But when I park it, at night it leaks and in morning I find there is lots of coolant on the ground.
Why doesn’t it leak when it is hot?

Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community.
Great question and hopefully we can help. The coolant system is a pressurized system. Once engine starts, the system begins to pressurize. As the engine heats up, all parts throughout the system begin to operate and guide coolant through engine.
If engine is running for a short period of time, it’s common for certain parts within the system to not operate…ex: Thermostat not opening and allowing coolant through remaining portion of engine.
Once engine turns off, it has an aggressive amount of pressure inside system and in your case…it’s beginning to leak out of the reservoir vent…or it’s likely that’s happening.
Do you notice any coolant leaking out of your reservoir vent while engine is running or after engine is turned off after driving for awhile…?

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders it is leaking somewhere near where the hose pipe from the engine meets the radiator, so I put metal clamp to stop the leak but now the plastic part of radiator appears to be leaking!
But that doesn't happen when daytime I keep checking the same area where it leaks at night,
I drive 150- 200 km on average regularly..
It only happens at night when it is cold....
Car has done 300,000 +kms...

Thanks for the update, you may need to install a new hose. Unfortunately over time, the hose can harden and warp…witch makes it very difficult for the clamp to secure itself in a way to create a water-tight seal. 👍

So i took my car to the dealership and they rplace the thermostat and the water pump. However, when i took my car back, drove it for atleast 20 miles. When i turn of my engine, oppened the hood the coolant was boiling. Is that normal?

We strongly recommend not opening the coolant cap on the radiator while the engine is warm, the coolant can burn you...no fun!

I’ve done everything like you said ran the car for 30 minutes it got up to normal operating range but fan never came on check fuse box everything looked ok fan will come on with ac but not with just engine running I’m at a loss

If you have taking the car for a long drive and the temperature needle inside your instrument cluster remains below half, that is also a clear indication that your new thermostat is operating correctly and efficiently. 😀

I noticed the heater was not working when the cap was off, but as soon as I put that cap back on and the system pressurized it worked properly. Is that normal? The radiator fan never turned on for the engine but it was a cool day and I believe it just didn't get hot enough.
Good morning, sometimes this will happen due to lack of pressure. Once engine is running, the coolant system begins to build its required internal pressure in order to operate as designed and cool the engine…and assist in the operation of the heating/ventilation system. Lack of pressure can significantly degrade operation.

Thanks for watching, great question. You will follow this procedure when fully draining system and filling from completely empty up to proper quantity within fill parameters of reservoir.
When just adding coolant, as you are in your case, we recommend having the engine off for a minimum of three hours, followed by opening reservoir cap and adding fluid until it reaches within fill parameters.
What if I just put the 50/50 Preston’s coolant without bleeding it
Without bleeding it you could have overheating problems
My little hose coming from the reservoir tank travels back behind the valve cover instead of going right to the bottom right where yours goes. I’m hoping my leak is the same deal. I’m losing coolant but never see puddles.

Great videos , got a Astra GTC 1.4T , had to renew the degassing hose o-ring as was leaking slightly, found it difficult to bleed system, opened yellow valve ,coolant flows ok, middle gauge temperature but fan only comes on with a/c no overheating but rad feels cool.

I am getting a hissing sound at the coolant reservoir tank even after driving around 15-30 min and sometimes the coolant comes out of the overflow hole(beside the cap)
Any suggestions?what could be problem and please let me know any solution for this problem.
Note: So far my engine temperature is fine (just less than half) and not overheating.

We HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend purchasing the Dorman brand reservoir.
The OEM part is no good...embarrassing tell you the truth.

First of all. I wish I had seen these videos before I had to refill my coolant. However recently a hose in our 2012 Chevy Cruze broke and coolant was leaking out. Leading it to over heat. After fixing it. Noticed that our coolant temperature being about 195 degrees to 220. My question is, is that an okay temperature of it is close to 220? Because my gf and I are moving from California to Georgia in 2 weeks and want to make sure we can make it without overheating.

Thanks for watching & great question. That is normal operating temperatures. Once your engine heats up to approximately 215-225*....your Thermostat opens up which allows coolant to continue to flow through the remaining system...which keeps your engine temperature within its normal operating range.
Most important thing to monitor is the actual needle. Your engine temperature needle should always always always stay below the 1/2 way point... if it goes above 1/2, something is wrong.

Question: why do you need to unscrew the plastic screw at the beginning?

Thanks for watching & great question. This will depend on which coolant you purchase. The coolant shown in this video is already mixed 50-50 which does not require any additional water to be added nor any additional mixing.
In the event that you purchase a full bottle of coolant that is NOT already premixed, you will be required to add water and you will have to follow the mixing directions to make sure you have mixed the proper quantity of water to coolant.
We always recommend taking a look at your owners manual and purchasing the exact coolant that your manufacturer recommends... in our case with our Chevy Cruz, it was the GM December-cool.
