  • John Romero's Daikatana is a first-person shooter video game developed by Ion Storm for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo 64, and released in 2000. A PlayStation version had been planned but was cancelled during development. The game received negative reviews from critics and is known as one of the major commercial failures of the video game industry.

@Androzz Senpai, neither was Daikatana though. Both are games that receive an amount of hate that's disproportional to their quality. Neither delivered, or could've ever delivered, on the amount of hype that was promised. Idk, I can see the comparison I guess. I did enjoy both games

The game's not very good, but it certainly doesn't deserve the title of "one of the worst games of all time" like a lot of people claim it is.

      @balthier-leadingman3782 8 років тому +1

      @develin 8 років тому

+Balthier -leading man to be honest though by that notion we drown in "the worst game ever" these days - given that without a day one patch most games are broken and there is fair amount of dull games.
After it's patches the game played fine - not perfect and it didn't make it a good game, just not a broken one.

    • @nightruler666

" game is broken " you haven't played big rigs over the road racing have you?

    • @-Zakhiel-
      @-Zakhiel- 8 років тому +3

      The game is beyond broken.
I have the game on PC and even with the latest patches, it's impossible to finish the game without cheating because of some crash wich are impossible to avoid.
Weapons balance is crap. You would think for exemple that an automatic shotgun would be great... It's not.
And the bots... oh, my, god... the bots ! If you want to play this game, you have (and I mean you HAVE) to tell your botsy friends to stay were they are, clear the level THEN backtracking to the bots and tell them "'kay ! Follow me !". If you try to play the levels with the bots, you're doomed.
It's not the worst game of all time but it deserves his reputation.
It's a shame because some of the levels are realy beautiful, I like what they'v tried to do with the level design. Many of the levels are open, with differents paths, atmosphere is great and you feel you're in a real world, not just in corridors shooting bad guys.
I like the look of some levels, I respect what they tried to do and I admire John Romero (who is realy a great guy)... But this game didn't make me his bitch.

Great video, very good backstory! Only thing I wouldn't mind hearing about was what happened to John Romero after Daikatana, but of course, not relevant to N64 video.
The lack of sound effects in the cutscenes was kind of appalling (like the sword slashes, etc). Intro cutscene was really quite bad. Also, starting the game with turrets, was...just plain bad and no fun. The graphics are not bad, they did some cool stuff for N64. I think you just need to compare this game to the earlier fps pc generation; if it were out then, it would've been really enjoyed more (Doom, Wolfenstein, Quake 1, Hexen timeframe, it's far far more complex single player, and looks and plays like that time). Btw, I "fixed" the controls to be more like GoldenEye 1.1 on GoldenEye Vault - Misc Mods, for the record, so its more playable for layman like myself who can only use those controls, not Turok controls, with an Everdrive 64.

I suppose that, in a sense, Daikatana inspired Time Splitters. At least in the sense that both are games that have levels that take place in entirely different time period, with corresponding weapons and enemies for each set piece, and although there is a bigger narrative there's also level-dependent subplots.
In a funny way, Daikatana could be remade into part of the Timesplitters franchise, if Epic Games every makes a new one.

I dare say that Warren Spector took what John Romero promised and delivered on that promise with Deus Ex: The Conspiracy. If any game made people its bitch, it was Deus Ex back in 2000.
Regardless, Glenn you are the first person I have ever know to say something positive about Daikatana. I was excited for this game back when it was announced then was rather sad when all the bad press ca,me out about it after it finally dropped. Whenever I can get another N64, my current one crapped out on me, then I might look into getting Daikatana, just to check it out.
On similar but different note: DOOM 64 is another game I always wanted to play but never did back in the day. Goldeneye, Quake, and Perfect Dark had me steadily shooting polygon bastitches all day! Speaking of which, and as I've been saying for years now, FPSs need to bring back limb damage, damn it. Imagine how awesome that feature would be in multiplayer games.... #YouHeardItHereFirst

I just beat this for the first time and actually ended up enjoying it. I appreciated that because of the poor ai, it was much easier than the other fps games on the system. Games like quake often take many attempts to beat each stage, but I really liked that I could just blast through the game and enjoy it without having to repeat the levels over and over. The level design is solid throughout and the range of guns is fun.

John Romero lives over here in Ireland with his family now and as far as I know he has a new games development studio set up in Galway, where he is now living. I'm on the east side of Ireland, in the west part of Dublin. I still have my Nintendo 64 version of Daikatana and to be fair, the game isn't the 'worst game of all time' as some people make it out to be. I've got it on my PC too. I'm really enjoying pulling out my old Nintendo 64 games and playing them again after not touching them for a long time. I love my Xbox One, Playstation 4 etc etc but it's nice to pull out the old consoles like the Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Playstation One, Gamecube and Atari 2600 among others (yes it still works great, bought it online fully boxed with controllers and paddles etc a while ago and no problems with it thankfully). Love old and new games. Oiche mhaith, agus go raibh maith agat.

I first encountered this game when my younger cousin had it. The way it presented itself in the opening cutscene and then it had me curious.
The opening song was good to my ears.
Then, I wanted to see more. So I bought it off him since he never played it. then as I did progress through the game, I enjoyed the game for its levels, especially Ancient Greece!
and so, I did enjoy this game as much....however, I do wish that there was a co-op mode where you and two other friends could play as Superfly and Mikiko.
I also, don't mind the captioned text as it can give me the option to choose my own voice. Afterall, it did work for Goldeneye 007
And I'm not saying that Jontron and James Rolfe can go fuck themselves, I'm saying that its not too bad of a game if you just look past everything that you expect it to be like a spoiled child and then appreciate it for the sense of adventure.

Interesting! Heard so many things about this game (good and bad...) but have never been able to play it myself. Have I been missing out? ;)
Also... honest question! Do you still play the Nintendo 64 regularly nowadays? It's nice to see a channel like yours dedicated to this system, because there don't seem to be many. Will be looking forward to reviews of games such as "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys," "Tonic Trouble," "Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko" and "Glover!" Oh, and if you do that last one, please mention the sequel to it that was sadly cancelled... :(
One last question; why is "Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion" so expensive? It's been a game I've been wanting to try for years, but I haven't been able to find it for a price I'm willing to pay, yet.

Even though the N64 version has uglier graphics than the PC version, here are some things about the former that I like better:
-The N64 version took out the dumbness of Superfly and Mikiko from gameplay.
    -No bullshit stage hazards.
-The battle against Kage Mishima has been greatly toned down.
-The ending cinematic got Mikiko's father right! Also seeing Kage being a crate mover was funny. Also, the part where it shows Hiro living in exile looks better.

I heard he hired fresh out of university developers which is honourable and awesome but maybe it's a reason why it didn't turn out as good as it should've been.

I think Daikatana should have stayed in the Quake 1 engine. I still somewhat like this game though. It's not that bad, it's just underwhelming because of it's hype.

Neither. The Game Boy Color version of the game is the best, and much higher rated than the N64 and PC versions

Me and the wife got this game ( PC ) on release day and we liked it. It had great particle effects but man this game on the N64 I cant even tell what we are looking at. The weapons barely look like anything and the enemies are even worse. Even for a n64 game this looks really bad.

This game was and still is an obscurity to me. Growing up I had no memory or knowledge. In hindsight I would have looked forward to its rpg mechanics and large world maps it promised. But I was so young as I only got to enjoy Banjo mario and Zelda most of the grittier games where not in my eye yet.

I think Duke Nukem Forever is way worse in terms of development history. It was in production for 12 years until 3D Realms suspended the development in 2009. Gearbox put together and released the scraps of that original project.
