  • Humanity has created 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste, and only 9% of that has been recycled. Cosmetic company LUSH recognized how much of that waste comes from packaging within the cosmetic industry and vowed to make a change. The company now features a wide variety of products that come without packaging-also known by their terms as "naked. "Some of these products include shampoo bars and shower gels.

    Also, instead of buying plastic packaging for skincare, look for glass. It's more stable than plastic and recyclable.

    • @alexine1084
      @alexine1084 6 років тому +482

      Yes but the thing is, when your hands are soapy, the glass packaging might slip and shatter so that's just borderline dangerous.

    • @Soprie
      @Soprie 6 років тому +248

      J Alexineee P 1) I said for skincare. There's no change of a bottle shattering if you're using skincare products in front of a mirror / sink.
      2) glass skincare products rarely break. Maybe a cheap foundation bottle from the drugstore, but again, you're not using any of it in the shower.

    • @alexine1084
      @alexine1084 6 років тому +100

      Oh. Well that's a good point thanks for correcting me. But I also did consider facial wash as a skincare product and other soaps as it does take care of our skin. Well that's what it's considered where I'm from at least.

      and the glass jars can be used for many more things

      For the overall life cycle of packaging, plastic is a lot lighter than glass and typically creates less of an impact on the environment.
      For end of life, reusing is better than recycling (because no reprocessing is required), and glass is chemically inert.

      @@rhiannandonnell2634 it's not just the shampoo bar. Skin/facecare, body wash and shampoo is included in that. If you have money to spend it on some ridiculously high prized makeup then you do have 20$. Using that as an excuse to buy cheap shampoo in plastic bottles is just wrong.

The only reason one should need to consider conserving water is if the place you live in has water shortages. It usually isn't an issue in 1st world countries. The only product I could honestly see myself using would have to be the hot oil treatment. Also how do they not package this when it's time to ship? Cleanliness wise, as far as handling is concerned, idk if I could buy this without some type of plastic or cardboard around it.

      SiSero87 I have the lush shampoo thing. I find it really effective. Since I go swimming a lot, after using certain products, my hair will feel crunchy. Legit crunchy as a chip, so I’d have to use conditioner after putting shampoo.
      But ever since my mom bought lush, my hair is always softer after I take a shower and I don’t have to use conditioner so my hair isn’t crunchy. I find it really good.
      The only thing is, I can’t use it everyday. I don’t find it too effective if you have a lot of dandruff, so I’d still have to use head and shoulders plus the conditioner every other day.

    • @Rhelanae
      @Rhelanae 6 років тому +4

      Everyone has different needs for their hair. I like the shampoo bars but I can’t really find myself using them since I dye my hair (it’s blue at the moment) and their main ingredient is SLS which is a major colour stripper. My climate is dry and cold in the winter and humid and warm in the summer so I have to make sure my products are super hydrating so that my thick hair doesn’t get too fragile and I felt that the shampoo bars only exacerbated the problem in the winter.
      I tried their shampoo bars for a solid five months and didn’t notice any improvement in my hair so I switched back to Hask keratin shampoo. I also sampled the conditioner but it left my hair straw-like. So I went back to Hask Biotin conditioner with a hair mask every week. I would be interested if they had hair masks. I use their face masks a lot actually. And their bath stuff when I can.

    Thanks, but I'd rather use products with effective, proven ingredients that actually work and are contained in dark, airtight packaging so they don't oxidise. Also, fragrances irritate the skin and the amount of binders needed to make a product "packageless" makes it pretty ineffective for whatever job it is supposed to be doing. A good try, but no.

    • @nomz500
      @nomz500 6 років тому +103

      Soprie I found a NZ brand ethique that are plastic packageless. They have samplers and I found they worked really well - if they had a local store I would definitely use all of the time. Plastic free can work just as well.

      alexander hamilton "natural" is not a scientific term and had no FDA regulation whatsoever. It has no bearing on whether a product is safe or effective. Like, nightshade berries are "natural" and they are poisonous as hell. Cinnamob essential oil is also "natural" and is extremely irritating to skin and causes contact dermatitis. "Natural" means absolutely nothing.

    • @KamiltheCamel
      @KamiltheCamel 6 років тому +49

      I am not a very smart man. It would be more convenient, not better. The #1 rule to waste free is refuse as in don't even create the need for the package. Even if it is biodegradable, it has to be produced and that uses energy. However, if you can just throw it in the compost, then yeah it is a lot better than plastic, but biodegradable plastic is only compostable in specific environments, so it isn't that much better.

    See, recently I bought this LUSH shampoo bar (or naked shampoo, as it does not have any plastic) with a tin box sold in the same store to keep it. It is great for my hair, but is definitely not as affordable and convenient as traditional shampoo that comes in plastic bottles (LUSH also sells those if you are interested). Even if I kept it on the box, it got RUINED it is terribly smushed. I understand the concept of recycling and protecting the planet, but my very humble opinion is that first things first, you gotta make your products great, so that they do not get ruined, as happened with my shampoo.

It is natrually much stronger and healthier and you would not even belive how amazing Brazilliant smells. I am never going back, everybody should give Lush's hair care treatments a try. All those chemicals in drug store producs (like silicones etc) do more harm then good, believe me. My hair was so damaged and now I bearly have to use conditioner, if I do, I use the green one shown above which makes the hair even softer. Not kidding, I am seriously obsessed!

I woke up in the store about 2 minutes later, still in the store with an even worse headache. Everyone in the store was crowded around me and I hated it. I was then rushed to the hospital, though I was fine. Never going into a strong smelling store again. As a person with natural hair (and I'm sure this goes for other peoples hair types as well), I can't just use random shampoos and conditioners. I have to use ones specifically catered to my hair type and texture (which i doubt they are going to make ones for every different hair type, texture, color, etc). In order to get all of the benefits from the shampoo bars as I do my $2.89, 12.6 ounce shampoos and conditioners, I would have to use 4 different bars and spend $52.00. Which as a person who is environmentally responsible, and does their best not to contribute to pollution and such it's not worth it. Also the way you have to apply it is sure to give you tangles. The concept is great and the shower gels seem to work well, but as far as hair products go it doesn't seem very practical.

    I've been recycling glass, paper and aluminum in my apartment, but OMG I need to recycle plastic asap! I wish everyone would get on board!!!!!! Please, google the nearest recycling facility in your town/ city nearest you!!! The one I visit takes less than 5 minutes to go, I don't have to leave my car whatsoever!!!!! A little goes a long way!!!!!

      Thya Smith the purple shampoo bar is great, I have very oily scalp and it manages it amazingly without drying me out.

      A shampoo bar coats around $10-14 depending on which one you get... and lasts probably 3 or 4 months for me and I wash my hair every other day

    Tbh the naked products just give them a larger profit margin as they melt in hot weather and in bathroom they shrink and sweat. Lots of other companies that are similar, cheaper and don’t use sls now too.

    I live for the "New Shampoo Bar" It's the only thing that I wash my hair with anymore (I have wavy, frizzy hair for those of you wondering) but the thing is...when I purchase one, I still need a baggie to put it in to carry it home. Placing a bare bar of soap or shampoo into your bag or tote isn't the best idea...so in a way, you're still using packaging regardless.
