An oops from me regarding Guitar analogy with the Jaw Harp. Thanks @johnmaloney for pointing it out: The sound waves created by the strings don't go into the body through the sound hole/F-holes, bounce around, and come back out. That's a common misconception. They cause the top of the instrument to vibrate, which is what amplifies the sound. The purpose of the sound hole/F-holes is to allow the top to vibrate more feely and to allow air to escape the body and help projection. So throw out that analogy, however, a jaw harp does still use your mouth as a resonator :)
If you liked Stryper, you'll love Steelheart. Listen to their songs "I'll Never Let You Go" and "Can't Stop Me Loving You". Most people would suggest "She's Gone", which is still a good song, but I feel "Can't Stop Me Loving You" has better high notes. Of course, "I'll Never Let You Go" is their most famous song so everyone recommends that one. 🙂

Ötüken was the capital of the First Turkic Khaganate and Uyghur Khaganate. It has an important place in Turkic mythology and Tengrism. Otukan (Ötüken) is also one of the names given to Mother Earth. Otuken is located in Kharkhorin district in Övörkhangai Province of present-day Mongolia. Etügen Eke (Mother Earth) is an earth goddess in Tengrism. She was believed to be perpetually virginal. The word "etugen" associates with woman and daughter of Kayra. Also her name may have originated from Ötüken, the holy mountain of the earth and fertility gddess of the ancient Turks. Medieval sources sometimes pair Etugen with a male counterpart named Natigai or Nachigai(Natikai, Natıkay), although this is probably a mistake based on a mispronunciation of Etugen. In mythology Etugen is often represented as a young woman riding a grey bull.
Both, Ummet Özcan and the band members of Otyken have Turkic roots, both belong to different Turkic tribes whose original homeland was central Asia and Siberia. Over thousands of years, due to migration and the very large geographical areas, the different Turkic tribes grew apart from each other. Some of these tribes even migrated across the Bering Strait to North America thousands of years ago and are the ancestors of the indigenous tribes there. Although the various Turkish clans are widely distributed throughout Asia and Europe, they share the same original language, culture, instruments and mythology. According to Turkic mythology and stories, the area around the Altay Mountains is the original home of many Turkic tribes and "Otyken/Ötüken" is the first capitol of these tribes. This area is sacred to all Turks. Ummet Özcan, who himself has Turkish roots, is a DJ and lives in the Netherlands. He uses the throat singing technique here, which is very common among the Turkic and Mongolian peoples in Asia. Many instruments used here are also ancient and traditional. The second instrument Ozcan plays in the video is the "dombra" also called ikili (iki means 2 in Turkish) because it has 2 strings. A further development of this is the Turkish Saz/Bağlama which has more strings (6 - 7). The mouth instrument you call jaw harp looks modern, but the traditional version of it has existed for hundreds of years and is called "Gubuz". If I saw it correctly, there is also something like "Muhinhur" (an instrument with a horse's head and the strings made from the hair of the horse's mane) and "Kılkopuz", also called ikili, a kind of mixture of violin and double bass, the strings also made of horse hair. Otyken sings about the Altay /Altai mountains so far I could understand (because I can hear her singing "dağlar" which means mountains ın turkic languages) Ozcan sinngs about ancient Turkish deities that the Turks believed in before the emergence of the monotheistic religions when they were still shamans. From the names of the deities we can also deduce that these peoples were led more by matriarchy. Here are the names of some of the goddesses and gods Özcan sings about: * Tengri = sky god. He is the creator of everything. Tengri was the main god of the Turkish pantheon who controlled the celestial sphere. * Kayra or Kaira = Supreme God of the Universe * Adaghan = mountain god. * Ülgen or Ulgen = God of goodness. * Mergen = God of wisdom. * Kyzaghan/Kızagan = god of war * Umay = goddess of fertility. She is also the goddess of virginity and therefore refers to women, mothers and children. * Kuara = God of Thunder * Kubai/Kübey = Goddess of birth and children. It protects women who give birth. She gives children soul. * Koyash/Kuyaş = Sun God. Koyash is the son of Sky Tengri and the Earth Goddess. * Ak Ana = (Ak means White) Goddess of Creation. She is the original creator goddess of the Turkish people. She is known as the goddess of water. * Ay Ata = God of the Moon. * Gun Ana/Gün Ana = Goddess of the Sun. * Yel Ana = Goddess of the Wind * Yer Ata = God of the Earth * Od Ata or Öd-Ögöd = God of time. In Turkish mythology, he is seen as the personification of time. Often seen with the Time Horse Od Ana = Goddess of Fire. She is also called the goddess of marriage.

Through learning more traditional throat-singing, I had taught myself how to play overtone melodies when I played didgeridoo. One of the most profound musical experiences I've ever had was being surrounded by the members of Huun Hur Tu after one of their shows, and playing "Arte Sayur" (sort of the Tuvan national anthem) while they sang. Their vocals were nearly palpable; it felt like I could lean against them. In one evening those musicians taught me as much about art as I had learned in a lifetime as an artist. Anyone interested in more traditional overtone styles should check out Huun Hur Tu and the incredible singer Ondar, as well as the documentary Genghis Blues. There's so much being done with this music now (it's everywhere in movies; the Sardauker planet in Dune, for instance), and it makes me very happy to see this exposure and innovation. What a fun and educational experience. The spectrograph was especially helpful. Your explanations are technical and still approachable. The music itself was very interesting and enjoyable.
Great video, Beth! I was born and grew up in that City. When I was visiting my parents in 2014 I went to the Honey museum you mentioned and met Andrey. He is a very interesting character. Praises old Russian monarchy, doesn't believe men and women are equal in rights. He said that many problems we have now is because men are too soft nowadays and "can't keep their wives in an iron body (means they can't force discipline and point out that their place is in the kitchen /laundry room, etc). Also said he wished he lived in the end of the 19"th century when everything was as it should be. Wonder if he's changed his views since then. 🤔 Btw, the music and the whole performance is pure gold. 😊
You really should check out the Louvin Brothers. An old country close harmony brother duo act. They grew up singing sacred harp gospel. They were known for one brother singing high and one low and seamlessly switching places, oftentimes with few audience members realize that the brother that was just lower was now higher and vice versa. The Louvin Brothers are classics. Also for anyone interested there is an incredible podcast episode of the podcast Cocaine and Rhinestones about The Louvins. There story is wild and amazing and tragic and the episode is full of amazing old music clips.
Your not wrong about dancing. Ozmet plays this music at raves. You can watch it on yt. Mixing Siberian traditional music, with throat signing is amazing, putting it to a Techno driving beat is a stroke of genius
What an amazing song and performance! Your explanations are very interesting. I see I have some research to do into Otyken and throat singing. And I love how music makes you dance. Such obvious joy! 😊 MB
4:46 that's a Berimbau (as known In Brazil). It's a VERY old instrument estimated to have 15-10k years. Apparently originated in the Middle East/North Africa and spread form there.
Such a great song. I've always been fascinated by throat singing and often wondered what may have inspired people to take the time to develop the techniques. Btw, just a quick correction to what you were saying about how acoustic guitars work ... The sound waves created by the strings don't go into the body through the sound hole/F-holes, bounce around, and come back out. That's a common misconception. They cause the top of the instrument to vibrate, which is what amplifies the sound. The purpose of the sound hole/F-holes is to allow the top to vibrate more feely and to allow air to escape the body and help projection. But there are acoustics without any holes in the top that are just as loud.
Ötüken is one of the names given to Mother Earth in Tengriism, the traditional belief of the ancient Turks (Göktürk State). Altai people are one of the Turkic peoples. Most of them live in the Altai Republic in Siberia. There are also Altai people living in the Tuva Autonomous region of Russia. As a note, Altai mountains are the homeland of the Turks. Our Great Ancestors Bumin and Istemi Khagans, the founders of the Gokturk state, founded the Gokturk State, the first Turkish state in this geography. Greetings from Istanbul to all Turks wherever they live in the world.
Ummet has a Birembau. You see it a lot in Brazilian music. You "pick" it with a bow, "fret" it with a rock (or similar) and the gourd at the base amplifies and distorts the notes.
The title Altay highlights a mountain range called the Altai. Your note accidently transposed the L & T (it happens). Mountain ranges on the Moon were often named after their earthly counterparts thus, as an astronomer, the misspelled word caught my eye. Love your analysis as always and I really enjoyed this patron vote. Thanks Beth!
Love your reaction to this amazing group of cultural musicians. I’m in awe of the depth of music and story. Thank you much for the background of some of the techniques. PS you lol check out your music as well :)
Beth you are learning so fast. For me throat singing is something very special - it invokes something ancient but calm in me. Its connection to our ancient past. I wrote that women could learned throat singing but it takes a lot. They are wondefull . Trying to preserve tradition and language and promote culture that few people are aware of. Same as HU.Go Beth, music are universal language of homo sapens species that inhabits our Planet.

The various different types of beehives from different periods of time is beneficial and rewarding Because it demonstrates ancient maybe even prehistoric methods for people to have nourishment and medical intervention. but what the mass majority can handle is a Easy Flow beehive which anybody can use from elementary all the way throughout to a nursing home Retirement.
at 4:46 that instrument might be a berimbau I know that from capoeira where it's the "default" instrument used in roda. Maybe the instrument has different name in that mongol/turkish culture, but definitely looks and sound like the same.
I truly enjoyed the Intel pertaining to have sound is produced maintained and heard. one reason because when my daughter was still in her mother's womb I sung to her everyday twice a day throughout their entire pregnancy understanding that she did not understand words but she would remember that familiar sound granting her a sense of security within me from that familiar sound. another reason why I was able to learn so pleasantly is because the woman in the video is not wearing fingernail polish and barely any makeup if any at all.
I am engineer and I studied acoustics at university. For this reason, I have a more physical point of view about harmonics. Always that I attend a classical music show, I think about wave propagation, membranes, strings and so on.
Absolutely beautiful and, yes, fascinating. I'm always moved by the depth of feeling coming from various native performers..especially when doing their native music. As an aside...you did Amarillo by Morning (George Strait) not long ago. Now look up the same song...Bluegrass Cover...an Asian group. Listen to the erhu...unbelievable and another example of cross heritage playing creating beautiful music.
Hi Beth, this is my first time on your channel - by the way, I loved it. Regarding Otyken, I discovered it recently and was intrigued by the beautiful music they make. Regarding the instrument you ask about, at 04:46, played by Ummet, it is called "Berimbau" here in Brazil, and I don't know for sure, but perhaps it has African origins (Angola), or even from the city of Salvador, in the State of Bahia Brazil. It is often used in a dance/fight called "Capoeira". I hope I helped you. Peace and tranquility to all.
Throat singing is the manipulation of the false fold by using air pressure. You can make 3 different sounds at the same time. For the low notes, imagine grunting you feel a little vibration deep down in the throat. Push the air and try to maintain that deep vibration, and you will hear it start to sound like a motorcycle. Try not to hurt yourself your body is not used to using this muscle so train it. Then you can add overtones and you will sound like a tree frog. I have tought it to a few people. I like it because I am into octavism and it makes my normal singing voice even more powerful over time. Overtones are not a form of throat singing it is a manipulation of the tongue on the roof of the mouth.
I've been listening to Otyken for couple of months and I love their music. Very percussive and rhythmic with all of the different sounds they put together. I can see it being both energizing and meditative. I have to check out more of Ummet Ozcan. They would be a great live show!
I remember in music class in early Elementary School I was asking the name of this instrument which I could not describe but I said you used your mouth similar to a harmonica and nobody could tell me the name of the jaw harp But what I did know was deep sound that vibrates enters the ear in a very soothing and relaxing manner which is helpful when a young child is upset. somewhat recently I started wondering if a snake's forked tongue would pick up on the electrical impulses that are associated with those deep sounds. and what I had found out is that those deep sounds even to a snake with no ears encourages a response similar to what a person feels deep within their eardrum And those with severe hearing impairments can enjoy those vibrations fun stuff.
An oops from me regarding Guitar analogy with the Jaw Harp. Thanks @johnmaloney for pointing it out: The sound waves created by the strings don't go into the body through the sound hole/F-holes, bounce around, and come back out. That's a common misconception. Omg so happy so see you back with one of the bands I love
Btw, the music and the whole performance is pure gold. 😊
Thanks for yet again introducing me to great stuff! ❤ To the playlist it goes!
You can't help but love Otyken and dance to them (and The Hu).
Beth thanks for so interesting introduction !
Отукен супер, умнички, Умет Озкан получился потрясный дуэт, хотелось бы услышать их ещё в какой-нибудь песне. Привет из Сибири!
The pleasure you have for this music is clear. I LOVE this track!
Love Otyken. Find their vocals enthralling
Otyken are amazing! I love the energy and enthusiasm in their music. Thanks be to the algorithm for introducing them to me
Your not wrong about dancing.

Thanks for the introduction to a new musical type and group to follow. I love world music and this will be added to my playlist. Thanks, Beth! Roar!
4:46 that's a Berimbau (as known In Brazil). It's a VERY old instrument estimated to have 15-10k years. Apparently originated in the Middle East/North Africa and spread form there.
being inside a cloud of sound, enjoyment, praise
Excellent reaction, also very informative. Thanks ❤
Thanks John! I'll amend that!
Selam kardeşim ❤️
Very informative video, Beth, thank you for it! The dancing was cool, my first reaction also 😂
Turan eller var olsun! 🤘
Ummet has a Birembau. You see it a lot in Brazilian music. You "pick" it with a bow, "fret" it with a rock (or similar) and the gourd at the base amplifies and distorts the notes.
The instrument he's using is the berimbau. Very common here in Brazil, used in capoeira!
OTYKEN played at HOZO suprrfest just before Christmas in Sài Gòn, Việt Nam. Great show ‼️
The title Altay highlights a mountain range called the Altai. Your note accidently transposed the L & T (it happens). Mountain ranges on the Moon were often named after their earthly counterparts thus, as an astronomer, the misspelled word caught my eye. Love your analysis as always and I really enjoyed this patron vote. Thanks Beth!
THANK YOU,BETH for all musics...💖💖💖💖💖🎤🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
"I'm just going to dance the rest of this out."
You and me both, Beth!!!!
He is playing a Brazilian berimbau, traditionally used by capoeira musicians.
Love your reaction to this amazing group of cultural musicians. I’m in awe of the depth of music and story. Thank you much for the background of some of the techniques.
PS you lol check out your music as well :)
I love this. I had not heard something since i took a trip to iqualit back in the 1980’s
BETH IS ADORABLE ❤
Beth you are learning so fast. For me throat singing is something very special - it invokes something ancient but calm in me. Its connection to our ancient past. I wrote that women could learned throat singing but it takes a lot. They are wondefull . Trying to preserve tradition and language and promote culture that few people are aware of. Same as HU.Go Beth, music are universal language of homo sapens species that inhabits our Planet.
wonderful perception you have
Thanks for all the info you give me
Привет из Красноярска 👋 ❗ Жалко девчата из OTYKEN не сняли свой клип на Красноярских Столбах ❗ Вот это был бы огонь 🔥 ❗
The instrument that looked like a bow is a barimbau, which is a traditional Brazilian instrument.
Один из блогеров кто понял,качественно объяснил👍
Чего она объяснила тебе, она во первых не хера не поняла. Во вторых, её маленький мозг, ей хотя бы подсказал, где находится Алтай 😂
Good job Beth. Greetings from Siberia 😊
Regarding Fable... you should be proud of it, it's great. And anyone who hasn't heard it, what are you waiting for?
So happy right now! 🙂
Congrats on the shout out, friend! 😁
The instrument is a hungo (Angola) or berimbau (Brazil).
Very common in Salvador, Bahia/Brasil

I'm so glad you used Alex Glenfield overtone singing to show the different styles !
Best theoric explanation remains Anna-Maria Helefe videos
If any of you never listened to her work with RITUS, well, now is the time.
Does anyone else see some sort of connection with Heilung and Otyken? It would be an incredible historical and cultural overlap.
Lovely, amazed!!!❤
Thank you for your very interesting analysis
Glad you enjoyed it
I fell in love! You're like the sun! Oh my God, you're so beautiful! The sun has sanctified you with a divine brush! I'm losing my words!
It doesn't hurt that these gals are easy on the eyes. That said: it's a fascinating sound
I am engineer and I studied acoustics at university. For this reason, I have a more physical point of view about harmonics. Always that I attend a classical music show, I think about wave propagation, membranes, strings and so on.
The instrument he are playing is a Berimbau, from Angola and popularized in Brazil by slaves and capoeira practitioners.
It makes me feel like watching Dune. They certainly gets inspired by that.
In Brazil we call the long one string instrument Berimbau.
Just for Andrey's Fun, also for Us, succeeded.😊 ❤
Thank you, it's great reaction. 👍😊
Otyken [O-tu-k`en] is one of the best Russian "modern folk" bands.
Azyan - vocals; Ach - keyboard, throat singing; Kunchari - igil (two string cello); Otamay - komuz (two-three string guitar); Tsveta - vargan (aka mouth harp, jaw harp), drums, komuz, vocals; Maya - drums; Hakaida - bass-drums; Aiko (Muna from this year) - bass guitar.

Otyken is amazing! Ummet makes very dope tracks. His track Xanadu (also with Mongolian throat singing) is awesome!
Классная реакция😊👌🏻вспомнил школьные годы с илюстрациями😊🙏🏼👍🏻😊🇷🇺✌🏼
Hi you absolutely must check out “Pleiades Map”, the new single by the band called Saphath:) that’s one of the “you cannot miss” things
I see a Golden Buzzer in their future
