We learned a little bit about something like this in my psychology classes! The passion first comes from internal motivation (we do an activity for it's own sake because we simply like it or find it pleasurable), but then when we get external rewards (e.g., get paid to do it, we do it because others tell us to), the motivation becomes external. It's much harder to maintain motivation when it comes from a source outside ourselves! An example would be someone plays piano and they love it as their hobby. Their parents might encourage them to become pianist as a profession. Then they no longer like it as much because they're not doing it for fun, they're doing it for their parents or for the money. You're right, sometimes it's better to just stick to doing some activities as hobbies!
