I'm currently running a Mallory 12 volt electronic distributor on my 49 Panhead. I have to prime it four kicks when it's totally cold with the choke on all the way, so you're basically flooding it. Then I set the choke one click from completely open turn the key on kick it over usually starts right up one kick. When it's hot, no choke one kick over then turn on the ignition one two kicks it runs. I kept the original distributor just in case.
Both my 45's... stock ignition.... I do the " old school " dance... choke... 3 kicks, advance... key on... 99% of the time... even over winter clumber... first kick..runner. I have no problems with the points... let's face it... ran on points for 80 years... remember the army manual said these were only designed to last about...5 years.... 😎
I have that style if ignition on my 45. A Samwell unit with various advance curves. As the 45 is manual advance it's set to 0 and other than a bit of retardation at low rpm (kick) speed, its a static timing. It works very well for me. They say points are easier to sort, but are more likely to put you at the side of the road in the first place!
#askash, Hi Ash, On my WLA it starts much more easily when the battery has charged to at least 75 percent. Is this normal? Many thanks from New Zealand.
Very clever and knowledgeable fella

Cheers!

Let's see more of that model a coupe behind you, pendine sands car?
That location of the ignition switch is far from ideal, but is close to the hot pipes. I see a burned paw in someone's future.
....RooDog.....
whose EI set up is that ? , that 'floating' lobe/pick up seems very Heath Robinson.
