both Gon and Killua are like yin yang, Killua has a good heart but raised in a messed up family, while Gon is the opposite, hes actually messed up but raised in a good environment. that is why during the hunter exam, Killua can still interact and made friends with Gon. if their roles are switch up, and Gon are raised in messed up environment, I bet he would be a cold blooded killer and wont even interact with others and make friends.

One thing I think a lot of people don’t realize is everything Gon feels towards Kite is an extension of his feeling for his dad. He cares so much for Kite because of his importance to his dad. Kite isn’t just someone who is special to gon, kite is special to someone who is special to him. And on top of that, Gon thinks the only thing Ging values is strength. This isn’t just the first time Gon has to face potentially losing someone, it’s the first time he’s failed something that he thinks Ging thinks he’s ready for. There’s definitely an implication that because he let Kite get to this state, he will never see Ging.
I like the specific wording that was chosen by Pitou because it emphasizes the parallel between her relationship to Komugi and Gons relationship to Kite, "This person is someone whos important to someone important to me." They both want to save that person.
Man this makes me imagine if all of this happened to Gin instead it wouldve hit harder, i wouldve cared more, you would have to rewrite a lot of things but yeah.
@@orbboom6119yeah the only thing about this scene is that I just don’t care about kite. I watched the original 1999 so I know kite was in the first episode (or episode 2 I forgot which one) but he’s still virtually a rando. Now if kite was gons older brother who was looking for him so they could both go find ging then this would hit like a bag of bricks. This scene still got goosebumps out of me though.

One of the things I loved about this arc is the gradual way the ants (mostly the king & royal guard) show more and more humanity. Where as the hunters on the other hand become more and more monstrous from the lengths they go to win/ survive. The fact Pouf is the most human-looking Royal Guard yet has the least empathy of any of them is such a cool subtle detail to reinforce this

The omission of Kite in the beginning isn't just felt at the start and the end, Kite gives Gon Ging's license as a child in the manga, and there are a few moments where Gon thinks to himself about Kite, or about his dads license. Sure those are minor moments but they add up so that when you see Kite, it feels like you've known him all along, making his death hit harder, and Gon even more sympathetic
Yeah, Since I watched the original version when I was little and read the manga up to its point, I didn't like to see that they removed it in this version and I almost didn't continue watching it.
Honestly the most puzzling choice by the director to remove that aspect of the story. It's caused people to claim that Gon was acting out of character ( I mean he was but with good and believable reason) and question why he was so attached to Kite. Tho I think it still works out only due to how Gon is as a character. Just not as well
Exactly. Although the relationship built between Killua might be stronger, Kite was someone that not only saved his life but also told him about Ging and how he didn't die in an accident (what Gon believed) but instead was a hunter.
He's like the uncle that shows up and talks about all the antics he got in with your dad.

It does make Kites death less impactful to the viewer, sure. But I think it still should be obvious to any viewer paying attention why this death hit Gon so hard and why he is reacting this way, tbh

But it's logical, she heard him screaming, but she didn't pay attention to the words he is saying, because she was focused on komugi. That happenes to me. It's like when you don't pay attention in class, despite hearing the teacher's voice, you're in your own bubble!
Gon's VA absolutely killed it
killua didnt just 'leave' gon.. he understood the situation enough that both parties were stay true to there word for their own safety/benefit. he left so he could still assist the others while gons in waiting
there's a lot to say about what Gon is going through in episode 116, so here is my take on it
Gon was ready to arrive with Pitou and immediately start fighting, but when Pitou kept refusing to fight he didn't know what to do with all the anger he had accumulated over the past weeks, so he started directing some of it towards Killua.
when this creature,, who in his mind was completly evil, showed some humanity, Gon started to absolutely lose it (we saw something like this happen when Nobunaga cried for Uvo's death). this made Gon go into an inner conflict; his enemy was no longer a heartless creature. why didn't Pitou show some of that humanity and empaty towards Kite?
Killua analyzed the situation and saw that Pitou meant no threat to Komugi. he immediately knew that thier best shot if they wanted to save kite was to allow Pitou to heal her, but Killua also knew that this was the right thing to do.
Now, it's not that Gon didn't necessarily know this, but more that he was drowning so much in his need for revenge that didn't _care_ and so when Killua started asking him to let Pitou heal Komugi that made him angrier. Why should he wait? Because Komugi was important to Pitou? Kite was important to him too and yet no one gave him an hour! In his mind this was so unfair, and if Killua was asking him to do something so unreasonable then it must mean that he didn't care at all.
But Killua _did_ care, not only for Kite but specially for Gon, and I'm sure that Gon cares about Killua deeply as well! but the mix of anger, frustration and guilt made Gon act the way he did. now, I'm not trying to justify the way he treated Killua at all, but it's important to understand that he was in a very weak state of mind. Gon is a kid who spent his entirely life trapped on a small island and who is now struggling to learn how harsh the world can truly be.
there's a lot more than i can add to this, but it's a bit spoilery so I'm not going to lmao
Thank you for this comment, normally I wouldn't be very good at putting it into words how I feel about Gon as a character and especially throughout this episode in particular. But it's nice to see that some people share the same sentiment and are able to put it into words for the rest of us.
11:50 atp Pitou doesn’t remember who they are nor she knows who kite is. In pitou’s perspective there are 2 humans who seems like having a big grudge on her, they pose danger for Komugi’s life, and that they want her to heal this ‘kite’ person. So she just give them anything they want as long as komugi is safe, not that she knows whether kite can be saved or not
Why would she have forgotten them? Pitou was so completely enthralled by her fight with Kite that she developed her nen to try to revive him. Her whole personality of loving to fight was a result of meeting him. We see her relieving that moment in memory, and she saw the boys with him. She definitely knows who he's talking about.

It’s so crazy to see this side of Gon, especially when you compare him to the wholesome boy that he was at the beginning of this show. To see him lash out at Pitou like this is quite frightening. I always get chills during this episode. Amazingly well-written by Togashi, and phenomenal work by Gon’s voice actress.

@@blackeyes1252 he talked with Kite for 30 minutes half his lifetime ago and had no other contact with the dude. And his main attraction to the dude is wholly tied to actual important person - Ging. Thats who they talked about for the short time they were together. With Killua, Gon has a life outside Ging. He has experienced more with Killua than he has with Kite and Ging. He 100% values Killua higher. He is being emotional and irrational in that scene.

Kite actually does mean more to Gon than Killua does.
Gon is naturally friendly, makes friends with everyone. Gon and Killua are best friends but It's not really a symmetric friendship.
Killua's main goal was to get a friend. That was his "hunt". so Gon, his first friend, is particularly special to Killua. But Gon's hunt was not getting a friend.
Kite is the person who gave purpose to Gon, it's Kite who told Gon about Ging being alive, and about Ging being a hunter. This was omitted in the 2011 anime. But Gon's entire "hunt" is not Ging as a person, really, but "knowing why Ging left". It's Kite who hinted this to him, who told him being a hunter was a valid lifestyle. Gon's purpose is more tied to Kite than any other person.
Megumi Han did wonderful with Gon's character.

The issue with them showing Kite this late in the anime adaption is that people will rightfully ask why Gon cared that much about him.
In the manga Kite is the first character you see Gon interacting with.
He's the guy that pretty much convinced him to become a Hunter and search for his dad, and he's one of his main motivations throughout his journey, so it's no understatement how much Gon cared for him.
Unfortunately in the anime we would meet him at the start of the Chimera Ant arc, so it may feel a lil weird why Gon would behave like that.
It never realy bothered me, to me its pretty clear that Gon blames himself for someone (Kite) dying, thats pretty much the main thing that is important here.

"innocence facing something terrible for the first time" is not accurate. I would say its more like watching someone's actions break apart your entire worldview. Cause Gon is not innocent nor is he facing anything/anyone terrible in that moment.
Gon DOES have issues. He loves Killua, but to him, Kite represents the way to his dad, and Kite's death is him losing his way to his dad. Basically, it's his daddy issues acting up.
Let's not forget that Gon is 12 years old boy…

With it being decided that Gon will wait for one hour to keep an eye on Pitou, who can't use her Nen to defend herself right now, it would be pretty pointless for both of them to stay there.
This is still a mission first and foremost, Killua could be invaluable in other battles right now while Gon can easily keep Pitou in check alone as long as she uses Doctor Blythe.
So while I get what you mean, in Gons emotional state leaving him alone might be risky and mean, it is 100% the logical decision.
Even if Gon loses it, kills Pitou and thus kills Komugi and dooms any chance to get Kite back, that would still be better for the mission than Killua just chilling there and doing nothing instead of helping the other guys with Pouf and Youpi.

It's very surprising to me that people having the same taste regarding animes overall don't share my taste when it comes to specific arcs, seasons and/or movies.

This is one of the best pieces of work in voice acting I've ever heard. You can literally hear the actress's teeth grinding out of rage.
These episodes are classic for me, can't believe that watching them weekly as they aired was already 10 years ago...
That Gon scene is when I realised I like voice acting more than anything else in anime.
Ever since I watched that scene I've always said you can give me the best action scene and the best animation and I'll take good voice acting over it any day. Nothing gets more emotion out of me than some good voice acting.

I feel so much for both of these kids that shouldn't be going through this... That said, I don't even remember breathing the first I watched this episode lol. About Kite, you see, one of the things that the anime didn't adapt is the whole dialogue between Gon and Killua when they first met. Originally, Gon doesn't just talk about becoming a Hunter because of Ging, he adds that Kite seemed so proud of his dad when they met that he decided to become just like Ging. We see Gon displaying lots of self-esteem issues hroughout the arcs, some more subtle than others, so being able to make Kite proud and to prove his worth have a strong impact on his character.
Kite is basically why Gon is a Hunter. He would have never found out without him. "Hey, your dad is alive, he is a Hunter and a famous one at that. Here, take this application card. I'm sure you're Hunter material. Take the test as soon as you're old enouugh" Gon grew up thinking his dad died in a car accident. That's what Mito told him. His horizon widened like crazy through this one guy. The closest person to his father that he knows. Other people are like: "Oh he's very famous, oh I admire him from afar but actually never met him, oh I've worked with him on that game..." Kite is his pupil who must have formed a bond with him and gotten to know him and like Gon said 'earned his respect'. So he's a *very* special person to him.
The voice actor of Gon here was Amazing and perfectly done, every time i see that scene gives me chills

I have been watching anime for 12 years now and that angry Gon moment is by far the best rage voice acting I have ever heard, with Pain's speech to Naruto as the best calm yet chilling delivery of all time.
So that you understand the situation better, in the manga we discover Kaito in the first chapter, not only does he save Gon's life but he also tells him that his father is still alive, in reality it is rather Kaito who made Gon wants to become a Hunter, he had a huge impact on his life and on top of that he is his father's student so he is in a way part of the family since he is one of the people who brings him closer to Ging

Man Carter, Cannon and Jackson had the same reaction I had when I watched this the first time. Thats VA for Gon absolutely killed that performance. I literally rewatched it after the first time I watched it.
I have yet to see a better VA performance in anything than gon in this EP. One of the few episodes in anime that hits everytime I rewatch thanks to the art/VA

personally he is a kid and everything pitou is doing goes against what gon considered “normal” imo. along with 0 emotional regulation. he doesn’t mind people being killers or scammers but still has enough of a sense of justice to judge what’s done in front of him. he’s a natures kid and nature is inherently cruel so he gets that but an animal he’s seen be nothing but evil and kill without shame suddenly protecting a small woman would cause such a huge disconnect. it’s such a good insane amount of stuff mentally challenging him rn and it’s something that took me a few rewatches to get more of. it’s never been just kite.

Just to be clear about gon's relationship with kite, in the comics kaite an gon meeting in the very first volume, and kaite who told gon that jis father ging was alive, and after kite saves gon life from a bear-something atack, kite gives gon the hunter licence from ging, and from this gon start to have this dream to become a hunter and find out ging, witch makes more real this gon's breaking up

Gon and Kite where friends, and in 1st chapter of the chimera ant arc in the manga they recognize each other immediately, how wouldn't they, if they just met each other a few years ago, and it wasn't an encounter that anyone would easily forget, after all, Kite is Ging's friend and Gon's savior. Kite saved Gon from a Fox-bear in whale island, and taught him how to survive in the wild. After they spent some time talking in whale island, Kite gave Ging's hunter license to Gon so he can give it back to Ging when he find him.
So after seeing all this, you can understand why Kite is so important to Gon.
Some even speculate that Kite was some kind of father figure for Gon. He was the closest person to Ging (besides Mito) at the end of the day.
Kite was someone that Gon had in his heart since the story started. But in the 2011 anime he's just some random guy who saved him in a flashback and then left.
And it isn't like Kite is more important to Gon than Killua, I would say they're at lest equal.
I'm sure that if something like that happened to Killua Gon would react the same way.
You have to remember Gon is just a child, he's very inmature, has a weird sense of morality and I think he has a low self-steem, that would explain why he risk his life so easily. Maybe the abandonment of his father play a role in this behavior.
So in situations like this, it's no surprise for me that he harms himself and everyone around him.

13:30 Also to clarify it does seem a little weird that Gon means so much to Kite but the reason for that is that Kite is kinda of the reason why Gon got the idea of becoming hunter and looking for is dad. They skipped that in the beginning so it seems a little odd that he would go so far for Kite.
It’s not explained very well in the anime but the main reason that Gon is so invested in Kite is because Kite is the reason that Gon knows Ging is alive. Gon was originally told Ging died in a car accident and then Kite met Gon on whale island and told Gon that Ging was alive
Gon’s VA is so good in this episode.
Also, note that Kite is the first hunter we meet in the manga. In the very first volume, Gon meets Kite and learns about his father and about what hunters do. It’s never really stated, but kind of inferred, that Kite is Gon’s father figure. He’s never met Ging at this point, but this is Ging’s friend and student who introduced Gon to the Hunter society, because Aunt Mito kept this information from him. This doesn’t explain all of why Gon reacts the way he does, nor why he treats Killua the way he does in this episode… but it’s part of it for sure.
(They mention this interaction in the anime when Gon meets Kite at the very beginning of season 5, but in the manga… Gon and the readers realize that Kite really started Gon’s adventure to become a hunter)

gons relationship with kite is more fledged out in the manga. The anime brushes over the fact that Kite was like his mentor back on whale island.
The Day I discovered how Gon became for me as one of the most complex and hard to comprehend characters in anime .
You must love that this shows how unpredictable things can be.
there are so much moving pieces, unaccounted variables and grain of sands in the cogs, that it really embodies the saying "A battle plan never survive the first minute of a battle"
Each person has their own ways of thinking and trying to do things, and each are taking decision based on the situation and the situations keeps changing, its a perfectly chaotic Mayhem.
And its all orchastrated with Meastria by Togashi's.

I've been waiting for this moment for a long time
One of the big themes with the King and royal guards is that they all veer more and more into being human. Each of the guards has a "fatal flaw" manifested as a particular feeling or emotion. Pouf's is pride, which manifests in a toxic, self serving view of what the king should be. Pitou's is empathy, as she truly cares for the king and wishes for his wellbeing beyond the level of a mere guard. Youpi's hasn't been demonstrated yet, so I'm not gonna mention it.

Gon was so pissed off because he came to fight a soulless monster but the only things he witnessed was a person trying his best to save another person, acting completely like a normal caring human. Then as narrator said there was no target for his anger so he started screaming and overreacting. Because he is still a child.
The literal family of assassins wouldn’t mess with this, that’s how you know Gon is out of his mind with rage
I think during the short amount of time together with Kite at the beginning of the Chimera Arc, Gon got attached to Kite a lot. Gon admired Kite's skill, experience, and cool demeanor. He also saw Kite as a reliable mentor, much like how he envisioned his own father to be. Plus, Kite was one of the few people who had met and spent some time with Gon's father, which made Gon's attachment to Kite even stronger.
As for Gon being mean to Killua, I think if the same thing happened to Killua he would have lost his sane already at this point lol. It's just Kite happens to be the first one out of all the people who are important to Gon.

Ep 116 imo is probably the best voice acting I've seen ever .. there are many voice acting scenes that come close to this but nothing surpasses this not that I have seen yet .

Gon "cares about Kite more than Killua" because Kite is the closest thing Gon has to a dad and Kite has a direct connection to Ging. That's why they should have had that scene with Kite in the beginning like in 1999 version.
You have to keep in mind that Gon is still a 11 years old Kid
Its quite normal for someone at his age to be like that to his best friend in such complicated situations
Gon is absolutely right that Killua Isn't nearly as invested on Kite as he is, he doesn't care that much for his revival nor is he feeling as guilty as Gon. Ofc thats obviously not how to speak to a friend that is risking his life for your sake. But Gon is under immense amount of stress at the moment.

13:42 it was shown in the 1999 version that Kite was from the first episode when Gon was a little but in 2011 version it does not shown.. That's why Kite was so important for Gon also.
