    The fact that Miniature Rose, a nuke that we are told isnt even all that remarkable amongst weapons of mass destruction, is potentially what ends the pinnacle of an entire species just proves the point of Netero's final speech.
    Though they lack individuality, the ants are undoubtedly made stronger by their will to survive as a species. The result of this ideal was Meruem.
    Humans, on the other hand, are also capable of having the exact opposite traits. We can be selfish, greedy, and uniquely full of malice due to our individual tendencies and sense of free will. These human traits culminated in the creation the nuclear bomb.
    Netero's speech was almost mocking the king for being so naive when it came to the capabilities of humans. Meruem, the product of a collective species, was bested not by one man, but by the symbol of humanity's malice, the nuclear bomb. So, in a way, Netero carried the will of his species just as Meruem did, only Netero wasnt the sole owner of such power and the power he did hold wasnt even the true limit of what humans are capable of.

    in the original manga in Japanese for his line about "evolution" can also be read as like "malevolence". the author makes the point that humans are capable of both.

    • @ardynizunia9709
      @ardynizunia9709 3 місяці тому

      It does not just mean we are capable of both, it means that one always comes with the other no matter what.
      Humans will ALWAYS use their intellect and technology to create terrible weapons of mass destruction. We are incapable of truly trusting each other and not relying on the worst weapons possible to deter each other from doing anything. So even in peaceful times, humans will always use many resources to create better weapons out of panic that the enemy might get it first and then use it on them.
      So, human evolution ALWAYS comes with the worlds greatest cruelties, that is the message the author wanted to convey I believe.
      Meruem underestimated humanities infinite potential for evolution and how much they would use it for terrible things.

    • @Procrastinater
      @Procrastinater 3 місяці тому +45

      Almost, it is that Meruem underestimated humanity's capacity for evolution and malice both, he failed to see how the senseless evil of humanity is not only a flaw, but a strength of the species that could contend with his own.
      Meruem makes the argument that humans with their individuality cannot reach the soaring heights of power that he as the culmination of their species can, and by extention, a single human cannot justly rule the planet or the species as a whole.Netero puts him in his place with that quote, and the meaning behind it.
      Humanity cannot have any individual with an actual claim to be king, ruler, leader or god of the species like the ants can, but that does not mean that humans do not seek to attain it, this is the malice/malevolence part. Let me explain.
      In seeking to be more than just an individual member of the human species, to be king, rich or powerful, humans fight wars, oppress, commit genocide, resorts to racism, classism, propogate poverty, hoard wealth etc. To Meruem, these acts made no sense, how could a human (Diego) who in no way were a King like himself allow such inequality? In his eyes, it was as if a cow like any other cow were wasting lives and resources on itself.
      However, and this is the evolution part and what makes the quote so powerful and thought provoking. It is in the act of the individual humans to claim their unjust positions, in the suffering that followed that humanity evolved as a species. Humanity created inhumane weapons to use on themselves, such as the Rose. But in the end, these inhumane weapons made to be used on ourselves is what saved us from a hostile species which would have crushed us underfoot. Humanity's evil, malice and inequality - is paradoxically what caused humanity to evolve to the point where it could prevail against the chimera ants.

    The royal guards feelings really were all of their downfalls.
    Youpi obviously could've slaughtered all of them but he didn't want to, as he grew to be honorable and wanted to uphold his promise to Knuckle.
    Pouf could've killed Morel instead of just getting rid of the pipe. But his fanaticism left him to make the decision to go to look for the king as fast as he can instead.
    He could've killed many more of our crew if he actually focused on what he can do right now instead of obsessing over Meruem.
    And Pitou could've easily killed Gon faster than he could've put a hand on Komugi after she stopped Doctor Blythe and could use Nen again. But her feelings made her wanna be 110% certain that Komugi will be safe. And also she probably felt a bit bad for Gon honestly speaking.
    All three of the royal guard could've easily overwhelmed all of them, maybe not Killua as long as Godspeed is running, but after that runs out he's cooked too.
    So yeah, we really win this because the ants end up being far more human and led by emotion, while the humans end up being far more cruel and focusing on the objective at hand.
    I love this twisted dynamic between humans and ants this arc.

    I love how, in a world where crazy creatures like the king exist, nukes are still more destructive. If you didn't notice, Togashi decided to make that a point because he could have easily chosen to create an epic 20-episode senseless battle and finish it up by giving Netero a new move. Instead, we somehow involve bombs in the battle, something that the Japanese people have suffered from greatly. This is why HxH is special in my opinion - it actually has a great and clear message it wants to deliver. If there's anything that could ruin us, it's probably our own creations. We can be far worse than these monsters, and that's why most of us believe this arc is one of the greatest. It had the guts to turn its main characters into the monsters of the story when every main character in shonen anime was like Naruto or Goku and they would fix the world with love and forgiveness. Here in HxH, we see the true ugly side of human nature, and on top of that, Gon is our main character 🙂
    AoT and HxH have both somewhat covered this concept, but I personally like the overall message in HxH more.

      @@krishpache7271 They both did a great job, but I think anyone who has a little more experience in life can tell that, despite the weirdness in certain parts of the story, HxH has a far more beautiful and realistic message than Attack on Titan. Just because something is darker doesn't mean it's more realistic. Both series have elements of light and dark, but the ending in AoT only portrayed the dark sides of life and humanity, while HxH combined both light and dark. To me, that's all that matters when I watch a show. It doesn't matter how hype it was; the feeling afterward is more important.

      one fic build on that a bit where the mc was raised in the dark continent and while he was there all the beasts were all completely fine and nice and fully sentient. but when the humans arrived they started to devolve back into beasts which eventually became a danger to himself. so the final group to go there was led by netero and he went with netero. his goal was to wipe out all humans due to ruining what was his entire family. but he figured it would be more poetic and ironic for them to wipe themselves out so he gave them the ability for create nukes. and he is so stupidly old far far older than netero but not due to nen but due to the food that was on the dark continent basically hyper extending his life span. dude could tens of thousands of years old. but due to him being so old he can pretty much master any type of nen category and like gin use others abilities just based on how they would have developed it. his own ability is fucking overpowered though. basically his nen constantly seeps into the ground and spreads like a virus and he can make it explode. he also made a condition like kurapika but the premise is simple but overpowered. basically he can never be the one to attack first. if given enough time he could eventually have his nen seep into the entire planet and blow it up.

    Man Togashi is so good at writing. We've been shown that "normal human's" weapons don't work against nen users (Uvo vs the mafia for example), and we also have this "anime logic", where typically problems get resolved through the magic system in the anime. So the idea of defeating someone with a nuke never crosses our mind, and it's such a well crafted surprise. For some reason we assume nen is stronger than any "normal human weapon", but we've never seen someone using a nen attack that's equal, or even close to a nuke. And the fact that we see Netero's strongest move right before seeing the power of the bomb, it's like the show saying "Your aura can be pretty powerful... but a nuke is a nuke". This show subverts expectations the right way, and it's so well written.

Obviously nuclear warfare is still a big scar for many Japanese people today, so scenes like this will really hit home. Nuclear weapons ARE terrifying. They are no laughing matter, and togashi does not make light of that. With this, he says, "Yeah, Monsters are monsters, but humans are even worse". And we HAVE done worse. Death to millions? How many times has that already been repeated in past warfare? I just love this arc to bits and pieces. So many layers to unpack. Not just the characters, but the story and soul of it all.

Similarly, Netero stopped his training and came down from the mountain to form the school of martial arts that teaches people nen. Nah that's wrong. What is happening there is simple.
    Pouf and Youpi saw the nuke from a distance and concluded the King is in serious danger, if not possibly dead.
    So Pouf clones, who have all information Poud does, went into full feral ant mode. They didn't try to talk and deceive anyone anymore, because they were in sheer panic mode with their King being in danger. It's like what Knov told Knuckle after Knuckle said he can't see Youpi as an enemy anymore. Knov said even if they grow to become good people, if the King commands them they will always become monsters if necessary. That is what we saw here with Poufs clone, nothing more than that.
    Pouf started out as a crazy fanatic that wants to enforce his ideals of what a king should be on Meruem and he pretty much stays that way the entire time.

    Really long comment ahead so sorry in adv, it's just that think about this arc a lot and how wonderfully written it is to me . The consistent hubris of Chimera Ants being above humans based on their capability to evolve throughout the story, only to be knocked out of the park by Netero.
    The heavy emphasis on names was an integral and well-thought-out facet in the entire Chimera Arc. The moment they subjected themselves to that concept already meant they surrendered themselves to humanity’s influence. Naming, after all, is one of (if not the) biggest human construct of all. And if a particular species starts fighting humans on their own terms, then that just puts them in a terrible position. (e.g. Meruem not even being able to defeat Komugi once and that one scene where she revealed she came up with a move Meruem thought he came up with, 10 years ago. The gungi part itself was amazing, in hindsight.)
    And if you think about when and how naming even began between the ants, where humanity’s influence started, it was when the Queen ate a human. They lost the moment she devoured a human. Their own way of evolving was their biggest strength and their biggest weakness.

Kite also pointed it out many episodes ago, ants naturally lost their sense of unity by devouring humans and that too brought their downfall.

Malice - we’ve been here longer and had our fair share of evolution, parallel to that: the atrocious acts we perpetrated. We as a collective, are to blame for so many awful stuff, and what’s scarier is we’re still capable of committing worse. We’re not done evolving, not to mention we’re much used to our sense of individuality even as a collective than ants.

The writing on this really leaned on the thought that nothing of this world can surpass humanity, we’re the pinnacle of life on earth. Literally the only thing that could trump us (apart from ourselves and the earth itself) would only be a completely different being moving on their own terms, and that’s exactly what Togashi leans towards on the ongoing arc in the manga.

    Whatever that is or if it even exists in the real world, who knows, but I like to think it contributes to our obsession with the supernatural, aliens, and especially higher beings. Thinking about how nothing can hold humanity accountable for the terrible acts it has done and continue to do always scare and disturb me. Especially with what’s going on in the world right now.

    one of the best speeches in anime ever. the only thing that seperates humans from ants is that we learned to be civil as we evolved but we did not forget that we will go the demon's path as we get cornered and pushed to our limits just to achieve something that we truly want or get rid of something/someone that threatens our kind.

    I have been waiting for 126 for a very long time. Also Gon threatened the life of another human while the whole goal of the mission is to save humanity from this threat, that goes to show you that he's here only for his revenge. At least this is my understanding. Also as said before just trust the process, you will be satisfied. Also, I wish you understood more how the bomb scenario is genius writing.

    This is what makes Hunter x Hunter so bangin. Yes, Netero is the chairman but he isn’t the strongest so it’s open ended on who could’ve came through to beat the king. Also, styles make fights as well so anything can happen forreal.

      Pretty sure Netero was at least one of the top nen users in the world and he was the strongest human in his prime. But also the whole point is that even if the hunters failed, the ants would've been defeated by being bombed. That's why the chimera ants are actually ranked B in terms of how dangerous they are (A is the highest).

    • @tadk1312
      @tadk1312 3 місяці тому

      honestly in a straight 1v1 fight realistically nobody can take on meruem, just under certain conditions and set ups since nen battles are not always decided by brawn but in meruems case he could pretty much blitz everyone even if they posses certain abilities that can hurt him and netero was most likely the best match for meruem out of every hunter if it is a straight 1v1 since he has almost infinite endurance and far greater speed because of his one technique he honed for decades etc. I think in a different world where meruem didnt battle komugi in gungi before fighting netero he would not find netero's subconscious bias since he wasnt trained in this strategic way of thinking or atleast it would've taken much longer to get to this point. HOWEVER if meruem were to realize it doesnt make sense to fight him he could always run away or wait for a royal guard to arrive so they kill netero by jumping him or figure out tactics etc. NOOOOW another thing which I think is one of the very few "plotholes" in hxh that cant be explained with nen rules or logic of this world is the combination of knov + meleoron which could actually kill the king and which is what I believe is the reason why togashi made knov leave the battlefield with his ptsd thing because he probably realized that otherwise an attack from knov like wrapping his "space" around the kings neck and closing it which is literally manipulating space which doesnt know anything about sturdiness or how robust the kings body is, would be able to immedtial kill meruem by transporting his head into one of his rooms which was also shown that is works when he first invaded the palace and took out a soldier ant in this exact way. Tough normally that wouldnt be a problem because meruem could always avoid knovs attack or just kill him immediatly but meleoron with his absolute invisibility kinda negates that and if it were to ever come to this situation togashi would have to resort to smth like "the king felt a killing intent and dodged before knov could strike him" or "meleoron ran out of breathe" or "meruem avtivated his nen instincitvely blocking knovs nen based ability etc." which would all just be cheap writing and feel boring so I think that is why togashi decided to write knov out of the story at some point. However anything meleoron + lethal ability that ingores physical toughness could take out meruem but I like to ignore that because that would also require meleoron + nen user x/y to safely arrive to meruem etc. so its good how it is.

    • @Eagle3302PL
      @Eagle3302PL 3 місяці тому

      There are many ways to beat the king without being strong, poison, parasites, suffocation, teleport him to the moon etc. and these types of attacks mesh very well with stealth abilities like Meleoron's. There are a few things though, there was limited time and the best Hunters are hard to find. Just because they are super skilled does not guarantee these hunters would help in this fight. Netero wanted to fight the king himself. Netero's plan was built around minimal casualties. Internal politics of the Hunters association also limited his choice. In a straight up duel Netero is definitely the strongest human, and by a wide margin. But nen abilities can be tricky, and even the best nen user could end up matched up against someone with a counter ability or some sort of assassination specific ability e.g. long range poison delivery.

    Fun fact: (Spoilers of JJK ahead, in case anyone in the comments hasn't watched it yet)
    Gege is a big fan of HxH.
    There's a ton lot of things in JJK that were inspired by HxH and a lot of references (other mangas too, but the main inspiration was HxH), like for example, the domain expansion of Mahito was inspired by Netero's 100-type Guanyin Bodhisattva.
    And yeah, when Todo loses his hand and says "do you think I need both hands to use my cursed technique? My technique comes from the heart", it was 100% a reference to Netero too, he even had a golden glow behind him.
    I could keep pointing references and inspirations, but my comment would be too long. I'm pretty sure there may be videos that do that anyway.

    I think one reason why this particular battle is one of the best in anime history is because the storytelling going on while its happening.
    Its not the animation, or the originality of their powers, or even the coolness of the characters... It gets an 'A' in all of those categories, but the 'S' that puts this fight over the top is in how well the story is written around it. It takes its time, but not a single frame is wasted: every beat of each scene is _necessary_ and contains some nuance or meaningful insight that deepens our understanding of the characters, or some moment of suspense or payoff that makes us feel even _more_ invested... Its so well done.
    Newer fights in newer anime always look rad, but in this element, they just don't compare.

    The line "you understand nothing of humanity's infinite potential for evolution," to me was talking about humanity at large but also Netero talking about Meruem's internal struggle. The Queen's mistake was trying to mix in humans with her insect evolution, we don't operate as mechanical pieces towards ultimate power, we evolve, we think, we contemplate, we change, just as Meruem did.

    So strange you guys can't seem to catch the irony in how Meruem is portrayed and proved by these episodes as the strongest living being we have ever met, the culmination of an entire species evolution, not even the hatsu of the top nen user being capable to cause him any significant damage; but a common bomb made by humans in their arrogance, to kill amongst themselves was enough to damage and potentially take him out.
    It shows how brute strength is never enough compared to intelligence and proper strategy and even malice and potential; what humans have in abundance.
    Furthermore strengths Morel's point about a fight never being decided by nen alone.
    And proves how humans can be more malicious and "stronger" than anything that doesn't posses their innate qualities.
    Anyway, It's way more nuanced and profound than what you are perceiving right now.

His reaction while saying it just proves it, dude was feeling the moment. This is exactly what it's about when watching these longer shows, the pay off in their peaks is soooo GOOOD.
    Made me super happy to see that lol and I am curious how you guys would rank this show as a whole when you finish it and when you compare like peak episodes in this (like let's say 126 Netero vs. Meruem or early peak was Hisoka vs. Gon in Heavens Arena) to other peak episodes in other shows, let's say AoT or JJK season2 the whole ending of Shibuya Arc.
