Also, you made this one really tense by counting your mushrooms and letting the viewer know the depth of looming despair. And yes, "yote" sounds right.
My relationship with this series has been a bit of a wild ride, and I have you to thank for it. Way, way back in... 1999? 2000? I bought a copy of King's Field (KF2 JP), and... I hated it. The beginning was too hard, the controls were weird ("L2/R2 to look up and down? Whaaaaaaat?"), and I just totally bounced off the game. Flash forward 20+ years later, the UA-cam algorithm gods decided to put your KF2 magic only run in my front page, and my reaction was basically "huh... I didn't like that game at all, but I do like watching challenge runs of old, janky-ass games. Maybe I'll have a look." And you did such a great job showing off the game that I went "hey, this game actually looks kind of cool. Did I miss out?" So I hooked up my PS3, popped in KF2, and... I loved it. I'm not sure what about me changed in 20 years (though playing a bunch of Souls games might have something to do with it), but this time I was totally into the game, exploring, making progress, and just being totally immersed in one of the most atmospheric PS1 games ever made. After that, I decided to play the other 2 PS1 KF games "any way I can" (to borrow a phrase from SNESDrunk). KF3 was next, and I loved that game even more. I even got a fan translation for the original KF and played through that, and while it's not quite as good as the others, that's to be expected given it was literally FromSoft's first game ever. And really, it's still pretty good for the time it comes from. Finally, I ended up buying a legit used copy of KF:TAC for $90 (retro game prices are freaking crazy sometimes), and it was worth every penny. Easily one of the best PS2 games ever, and that's quite the accomplishment considering just how many gems that console has. So yeah, I went from hating KF to being a huge KF fan, and it's all because of you. Seriously, thank you so much for showing everyone how great these games are. Now if only we could get FromSoft to do modern remakes of these games. Seriously, we live in a world where The Last of Us Part 2 got a remaster like a year after it came out, but these games never got any? Ridiculous.
Just finished watching, the whole video was a treat.🖤 I for one am a big fan of the alliteration and i hope to hear more. As a woman I nearly didnt make it through... but thankfully you mentioned the Light House, saved the whole video for me. Fantastic content, looking forward to the next one.

well, hindsight is 20-20 and all that. I think it's a mistake to only view these games through the souls-lens, even if i'm guilty of making comparisons too. I think they're great standing on their own merits, and always were
@@BlinJeI think you summed it up well when you said something to the effect of "Just how many enemy types are in this game?". The amount of unique and often one-off stuff in the game is really great, even compared to Souls.
That one light spell is pretty effective at stunning enemies and creating up openings for a melee user. In a magic-only run, not so good. It was surprising to see how good the poison spell actually was, almost stunlocking some enemies.
Great video as always Blinge. It inspired me to finally take the leap and play this game for myself, doing a soft version of this challenge where I use magic 90% of the time, and I completed it last night. I even managed to do the speedrun trick in the well, though it didn’t amount to much (what’s with that area off to the side down there, it has nothing in it!). The only way I can see someone getting past that webbed door in the palace of oath magic-only is to find an area where they could potentially clip through the wall and fall into a zone beneath them, but even then, this would probably sacrifice the clarity bracelet, which is effectively a death sentence for the run anyway. As well, I don’t think you get XP for kills you didn’t actively participate in, so even if you were to get enemies to kill each other or fall off cliffs, it still wouldn’t get you the extra levels you need to cast fireball. And even if you were to get past all this, that still leaves the fact that the final boss MUST be hit by the moonlight sword, so the challenge fails at the end anyway (of note is that the lore explicitly references that fact that magic alone won’t stop the final boss, and that the moonlight sword exists to be the physical attack that finishes them off). Considering all that, I would say that for the moment, this is the closest anyone will get to beating the game magic-only, so take pride in the fact you did it. Overall, the game is a masterpiece in terms of tone and atmosphere, but hoo boy, is there a lot to be desired, not least of which are the horrible controls and turning mechanics. This game also has that classic FromSoft feel of being unfinished, as there are more than a few rooms after the Ocean Fortress that just have nothing in them; its like the opposite problem Shadow Tower Abyss had. Also, I leveled up every single magic in the game to level 3, and I gotta say, you know it’s a FromSoft game when the majority of magics you learn are either redundant, inefficient, and/or just straight up useless. This is exacerbated by the fact that they really messed up the magic crystal placement here, backloading the game with them. The greatest example I can think of is how you don’t get access to ice spells until AFTER the fire area, or how the game gives you 2/3 offensive dark spells only at the end of the game when they are effectively useless compared to the light spells, and the one you do get before then, eclipse, may be the worst spell in the game. Also, small gripe, but why do I have to sacrifice one of my crystal vials to the guy in the seaside cave in order to get the fortune bracelet? There are only six vials in the whole game, so you sacrifice 1/6 of your potential reusable hp/mp restoration to get a bracelet that doubles xp, in a game where you can easily beat the last boss at a lower level thanks to the awesome equipment and items you get. I know its optional, but the fact that it’s a bracelet makes its even more worthless considering the clarity and power bracelets exist. King’s Field 4 truly is the wackiest in the series with that sort of design.
