Log Cabin Barn Cleanup and Walkthrough

- In this video Allison and I clean up around the outside of the Log Cabin Barn, and then take you on a tour through the inside. We had only been inside through the front door, so it was the first time for use to see the joining of the beams that make it an actual log cabin.
We don't know much about this cabin/barn, so any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Jack up the sagging posts, replace the footings to them and then put new boards to weather proof the building. It will make a useful storage facility for equipment. Old buildings like this deserve to be preserved. Once all the wood work is completed, apply a rich deep red oil to help preserve the wood.

Marks on beams are from a "adze" used to square off timber by hand. Many times, the main house and attached barn were constructed so as to conserve resources when the land was first settled. If you have the means, it would be wonderful to preserve it as it is part of the history.

Hand hewn logs I would have it all rebuilt!
As for suggestions on your barn/ old cabin, I would first off level out the post and beam supports to make sure your building is level, on solid suport, anchored for wind, and remove any hazzards of anything that could fall and hurt someone. Than I think it is a matter of replacing where necessary boards that have rotted on the outside, and making the inside and outside weather proof. It actually looks like you could do all those things for a very small price. Oh, I would suggest going to a local private sawmill, and use rough cut lumber which will look better on an old building such as you have, and that way get similar dimention lumber to match what you have in place now. Since the main structure of the additions at least on one end is supported mainly by what is called Post and Beam that is what holds up the roof and primary part of the building. Look forward to see the results of your project.

Even better, although maybe not in budget, get your own sawmill and produce rough-cut lumber from your property to complete the needed updates.
@@AdamHathaway An Woodland Mills HM series ( Hm 122, Hm 126, and HM 130Max) bandsaw mill. can be bought new from $2700 to $7000 depending upon size of tree you want to mill. Any one even the smallest one the HM122 would be ideal to make new lumber from your own trees to redo this log cabin and barn attachments.

Looks as though you have a lot of Honey Locust trees, which are very strong, dense and very hard wood. Looks like that is what was used for the old barn. I have seen people use old barn wood to make furniture and use on walls. Absolutely beautiful.

Barn from the 1840’s to 1860’s…possibly used for tobacco drying and corn storage..Open slat for air circulation …
Also the other areas for mules to be housed and fed…
it's gorgeous! I can't decide if I wouldn't want all new wooden floors from the wood, or the actual project of saving the barn and restructuring using al the wood!

I d take apart the barn keep the old wood and rebuild it kinda like it was. Since it's not safe take down and save that wood for decorating a wall ect. It's worth some money to someone, you can sell the barn wood OR put it for sale to come and get it off your land. Rustic look some people love. Interesting vid 😊❤

Looks like most of the beams are hand hewn Timbers and the corners are dove tailed. Could be poplar or white oaks. You’ve got enough materials to build a really nice log home.

May had been the first house. If you go down to the original log cabin leave the roof extension for a cover just take off the exterior walls.

Disassemble the barn in order. Rebuild it into cabin and rent it out through the year.

4:40 Looks like an cellar probly for potatos, but could be Cannabis growing room aswell due to the metall sheets on the walls to keep the heat and light reflecting, alot of ventilation holes around it, needs good airflow if you going to grow Cannabis.
I would date the barn to late 1700/early 1800's, they usually used Pine or Fir for logg barns/cabins.
They usually seperated the seeds from the Chafs in those barns, big wooden clubs they smashed the wheat/barley and oats etc and then swept the floor and cleaned it thru different sized sieves.
Some water gutters would be nice on that barn to keep the water away from the walls, that's usually the reason why they go away, we hadd an similar style barn here in finland dated to around 1800's that rotted away due to water splashing on the walls/logs, it also hadd a big oven for baking bread and heating the big barn on winter, they cleaned and stored grain in it aswell and dried tobacco some years aswell. The Old "Ria" like we call them here, was built close to the fields so it was easier when the harvest season came. You know it's an old "Ria" when it has a longer continue roof on one of the sides, normally it's upsidedown V shaped roof, but on an old Ria, one side continue farther away.

Nice. From looking at the material used in the building, from the nails early 1900. some of the wood looks like 1920 or newer, but some, like in the log cabin and the framing for the barn, early to mid-1800. First, the cabin was built. Does it look like there could have been a second floor? At that time, farmers would keep their livestock inside during the winter. Until they could build a barn. Then came the barn. The new room looks like a grow-op room. The wood on the outside looks like it came from a second building. The roof is new, 1950 or newer.

That 2x4 room? I'm guessing that was the start of a grow room. Maybe it was never finished or used? With power right there, it wouldn't have taken much to run lights in it.

I would rent a metal detector and walk the grounds, especially around the buildings. You may find old coins that have a date stamped on them.

Save the main beams (all the larger wood) for a future build project. A new shed with proven old style craftsmanship. 👍

The ‘boulders’ yous keep mentioning are actually foundation stones cut for that building. 0:03 Our farm property has a rock quarry in the woods out back used to supply foundations etc for the house, barn, chicken coop and spring house.

Very cool. Next time you go pay taxes, talk to some of the older people in there and see if there’s an old timer that knows some history of that property. You can also research the deed history.

Those aren’t boulders but corners stones that are cut. I think the interior (not the grow op room) is an original log cabin house.

Please don't tear it down. The cut marks in the timbers are from what's called a hand adz. Looks something like a hoe, but meant for trueing timbers. Tobacco barns also used was farm animal shelters. If I were you I'd borrow a metal detector and search the dirt floors.🖒
I really don't want to tear it down. If we do, I'd love to keep the cabin part. The cabin part seems pretty solid but the barn part is pretty rough/unsafe. Great idea about a metal detector! Thanks!

I would try and take it down carefully saving the beams and planks putting them in a dry well covered barn and placing the bolders with them and maybe thinking of recreating it somewhere else on the property or use them in a new ( old ) dwelling just a suggestion. Larry

The only time I will tear something down is if it is not worth fixing or not safe. This one we haven't decided yet, but we love the beams and will definitely reuse most if not all of them if the barn part comes down. Thanks for commenting!

Might be old American chestnut, this barn dates to before the blight that destroyed most of the population. Big trees with straight trunks and rot resistant wood. They once made up 30-50٪ of Eastern hardwood forests.

If you tear down barn, keep all the old wood. You can sell it off for home decoration believe it or not, people use it in their baths, etc. or you could reuse it elsewhere. I would tear it down and build a more modern one, solar panels for electricity.

First I'd remove the barn boards on the exterior they are worth lots of money in any condition, people repurposing. I'd leave all the beams intact. Have it checked for how sound it was then maybe replace some beams or poor workmanship. The next step rebuild using great bones and make it new and great again. but that's what I'd do, it will be interesting to see what you do

I would completely dismantle the building as it is clearly very unsafe and probably past saving. But I would run all the beams etc through a machine to make the use able again and build another cabin or barn with them. So much decent wood in there
