More Vines in Pines, More Problems!

  • In this video I start taking on the challenge of cleaning up a quarter mile long row of pine trees that have been infested with vines and saplings that are killing the trees.
    We had a storm late August 2023 and had some damage to neighbors properties, so this is the start of trying to salvage this row of pines. But as always, things don't always go as planned!

      The forestry muncher is by far the most useful tool you have for this stage. The carbide teeth last much longer. Check out a bite limiter retrofit, teeth will last longer but kinda spendy. Get the property lines clear, mulch in place everything woody you can, flush to the ground, so the bush hog (or goats) can maintain it. You now have 2 operators, work in tandem (with 200ft of distance between…learned that the hard way). Much more productive together than one at a time.

    So amazing! A husband and wife getting it done together! What a dream! My second video of the two of you and I love the team work! In NC we have kudzu(non native vine) that has over taken the trees. Everything looks great! A+ job you two.

    What might be helpful is to get a professional out to help DIG up ALL the roots of the vines you pulled off the trees. Species of vines can just grow back with roots left. One more suggestion: a helper who can go after vines with a big trimmer and cut them up before they’re tangled in your equipment! Yes…. Uses up more time but saves repairs… right ?

      We are testing the goats now on the vines to see how they do with them, but there are a lot of them!

    So glad to see you keeping and caring for the pine trees. Those vines and volunteer "junk" trees are just parasitic. It's amazing how fast the growth occurs, even here in Iowa, let alone where you're at. I would say don't try to wrangle that stuff by hand, invest in fixing the equipment. It would keep you from attending to your wife and kids & make an old man out of you before your time.

    • @livingon80

      The equipment definitely helps and yes you are right, finding the right balance between "work" and family is a struggle sometimes. Thank you for your input!

    You need to let those goats loose in that underbrush. I’ve seen videos of how well goats can clear underbrush. I’ve heard that they love poison ivy. Once they clean up that…you can get the vines out

    • @livingon80
      @livingon80  7 місяців тому +1

      Absolutely! Right now they still seem to like goat food more than hay and brush but hopefully this Spring they can go to town on all that!

    Why do people build houses way out in the country on plenty of land, right next to the boundary where trees can fall on them?

    • @livingon80
      @livingon80  8 місяців тому

      Our pine trees are falling into neighbors yards in this video because our pines are getting destroyed with vines. But yes, I'm not a huge fan of homes in the fall path of large trees. The amount of shade you get isn't worth the risk of it falling, roots damaging foundations, etc. Thanks for watching!

    If you were able to have cows along that perimeter they would take care of that for you. You could also use a herd of goats to clear brush.

      Thanks! The previous owner passed and it was left to family. I think it was too much for them to maintain so it was left alone. We arent 100% sure how long though. I'm guessing 10 years or more just by the size of some of the trees that have grown where pastures were.

    Ladies! Get yourself trained in essential mechanics...it's not that hard. My dad showed me lots when I was a teen soI wouldn't be ignorant of the simplest things. IE changing a tire, jumping a battery, changing fuses...we're smart lets use those smarts 🙂

    I guess I understand why you want the vines out of there. But why are you opening it all up and losing your privacy?

    • @livingon80
      @livingon80  Рік тому +3

      I debated whether or not to clean this area up because you're right, it is opening it up. But, if I didn't clean it up, every time it storms, we will have damage to neighbors properties from fallen limbs. The growth is slowly killing all the trees and I'm afraid if I dont do anything about it, all of the trees will be gone in a few years and open even more. Thanks for watching and commenting!
