Northeast is the first place where Momo got famous in India. Maybe because we already have a diet of less spices involved, it got popular like crazy. Momo is basically dumplings from Tibet. Interesting Information: Though India was hub of spices we from Northeast were not that connected to it. The Bengali traders first brought Mustard Oil and also brought spices. The whole Northeast likes Bamboo shoot and yes we use herbs and different kinds of chillies for flavouring food. I am from Assam I can call out peethas for sweetness but there are peetha which are salted too. Also do try bhot jolokia it's the hottest pepper in the world.
Well, In Bihar we have bamboo shoot, sweet & savory peethas, etc in our diet or cuisines traditionally as well. And Fyi, Momo is Nepalis (but there's also tibetian variant momos), and indigenously consumed in Sikkim & West bengal's darjeeling (where there's huge settlement of Indian nepalis) since forever and got famous in all over India from those parts of India.

14:33, the kwai (leaf) does make you feel warm. Some of the lime (white paste) should be torn off the leaf before chewing as per your tolerance...For a first timer, the lime was a lot. The numbness in the tongue will also disappear in a couple of days. Enjoy your trip. Laitumkhrah and Don Bosco look beautiful in the evening light.
Very nice video. The local vegetables are organic. I must say that ginger and turmeric of Meghalaya are very special and among the best with high medicinal value. Best wishes for your beautiful tour. Stay healthy both of you. The leaf you had is called betel leaf (khasi paan) and 'kuaai' or betel nut (fermented ) and the white paste is limestone paste. That's why one feels very warm after eating it.
What you had (the leaf et al) was Kwai, betel nut processed under running water until they are ripe. The leaf is called paan. The white bit is lime paste. Chewed together, it turns red and gives you a high. Makes your body feel warm. However, if you swallow the juices you get dizzy spells and can actually pass out.
The green leaf is called a "Betel Leaf" and the hard thing is called "Betel Nut" or "Arecanut" and the white paste is "Calcium Carbonate". Calcium carbonate is the reason for making betel leaf eaters mouth "Red". Arecanut is slightly addictive for many people. Eating it after a meal is actually a tradition in south India (I don't know about other places). It is not bad for your health unless you eat more. 1 pan a day is quite healthy. The betel leaf has medicinal properties and is a good fiber source if you eat after a heavy meal and it acts a digestive. Calcium carbonate though needs to be eaten in very small quantity because it can burn your tongue if you add more. Limited quantity of Calcium carbonate makes your teeth and bones strong. (that's why they add it in small quantity in mili grams basically). The combination of these three items is actually considered as sacred and is used in Hindu worships called "pooja" in the south.
Ah yes you guys will find many boiled food, also the food is more soupy bases, and we don't use basmati rice for every day. Northeast India has lots and lots of Rice type varieties. If you stop by Assam try the Fish recipe ( Masor Tenga) it's a staple here. Also pigeon and duck they are most favourite of Assamese people. And mash potatoes are famous too, we call it Aloo Pitika. It's heavenly. Dried fish and Fermented fish goes really good. If you visit Korea, there's a thing called that Koreans don't have breakfast concept as they have rice. It's kinda same here, we eat rice as breakfast, lunch and dinner. After the influence of other people we do have different breakfasts but it's still can be pointed out that most households prefer rice as breakfasts. Northeast cuisine focuses on less oil and spices as we ourselves can't eat much heavy things since it's quite used less in our own houses.Hence restaurants also try to keep things local and less spicy
That 'KWAI' here in Shillong it's very common in each and every household if visit they will always offer/give it and in our local language here the leave we called it Tympew or Pathi and the nut the hard one which you said is called Kwai and the white creamy it's a lime made from limestone and we called it Shun. And the interesting part of it is that it also have a story behind all those three.
Most of the Northeast food are purely ORGANIC grown ORGANICALLY in small farms and hills, so when you taste the food 🍲 you will feel a different taste and also we here in the Northeast dont like to use Masala and all much, We just keep our dishes simple and authentic as it is ❤❤❤ glad to see you like the food and enjoy your time here in shillong ❤❤❤❤
The leaf you ate is called "Pan" and you will get it all over India also in Kolkata and in North India perhaps tastier than North-East. It is a kind of mouth freshner and good for digestion.
It's betel leaf with areca nut. The one you ate was simple one. You get variety in that. It's called 'Paan'. It is eaten after food. The paan consists of slaked lime ( white paste) catecheu, areca nut and tobacco. These are the basic things. But you get sweet paan also which will have fennel seeds, tamarind leaves, gulkand (made of rose petals), cherries, sometimes saffron (costly), slake lime and catecheu. It is Hot and astringent yet sweet. Due to its multiple fillings, the paan brings a fresh and cooling effect when relished. It's an ancient tradition in India. Ayurveda, promotes consumption of paan. It has medicinal property. It is high in carotenes, calcium, and vitamins like B3, B2, B1, and C. Very good for digestion of food. Sweet paan after chewing you can swallow. The simple one you must spit. Some people swallow. The red colour is because of catecheu. Have Bengali sweets if you are fond of sweets. Such as Roshogulla, shondesh, malpua, rasmalai, payesh, mishti doi, patishapta, chomchom etc. I don't know whether you will get it in Shillong. All these sweets are speciality of Kolkata. Enjoy the cuisines dear foodies. Keep Exploring ❤

The leaf is called betel leaf or paan in Hindi. A little lime (the white paste) is applied and eaten along with the nut which is called supari in Hindi. It is a mouth freshner and digestive eaten after having a meal

And the white paste is lime and it's also called " shun" in khasi (and the people there are telling to eat it less it's because, the lime will eat your mouth if you eat in excess). Kwai helps in strengthening and straightening our teeth. And for the bonus part some khasi people (mostly older and elderly people) eat it with what we call "Duma" ... Every Indian fruit is probably sweeter than what you get in the first world countries(Europe and North America) because they're most of the fruit is GMO end mostly hybrids which focuses more on production and insect repellent genes... Here in India the fruits are more local, it is mostly naturally occurring fruits so they are sweeter, plumper, juicier and fruitier....
North East India looks like a different country compared to Delhi, Mumbai etc. Masala is an important item in Mainland India but not in North East India.
Momos is so famous and so many variations ... Delhi has alot of goooood momos place it's actually from nepal and north east but many years back it made it's way to north India and very quickly became our favorite snack along with spring rolls and now in delhi you can get it almost every street. I guess every country has it's own dumplings I lived in Ukraine for 6 years they had sweet and vegetarian and meaty dumplings called vernikyi which were soooooo good with cranberry sauce.
Contrary 2 ignorant believes, Momo & Chowmein r not originally from NE & not part of any ethnic cuisines in this diverse region. Those dishes r from Tibet/Nepal, from where they entered India through WB and later became popular street foods first across North-East & then North India.
Aloo sabzi (potato curry ) + Poori combo is perhaps one of the most popular potato dishes in India. Also , the leafy thing which Noah ate , is called as Paan (betel leaf ), Paan is generally eaten as a mouth freshner after a meal, just like fennel , it is said that eating paan after a meal is good for digestion and also is a great mouth freshner Lastly, that white pigment is called chuna (limestone) , limestone is good in calcium and along with betel leaf is considered good. The seller told to reduce its quantity because if eaten more, it can cause cuts in mouth Happy eating😊
In Assam we eat pitha for sweet, there are different kinds of pitha. But we mostly prepare pitha during bihu festivals only, we don't eat much sweet things
13.53 is called kwai its a local khasi mouth freshener...you should put less lime...the white paste is lime...at first try you should put less lime till you adapt...and you should just chew the whole thing and swallow....its addictive...
The leaves are paan or betel leaf which are acidic in nature & the white paste is calcium hydroxide i.e slaked lime. Too much slaked lime can cause burning of the tongue. The seeds are areca nuts which are the psychoactive ingredient. The combination along with fennel seeds is said to be good for digestion after a meal. However some people are addicted to it primarily for the areca nuts.

bro the pan u ate is used with betel leaves lime paste and betel nuts , when you chew lime mixes with betel leaves n nuts it gives u a little high as it mixes with saliva and gets into ur body , some people add tobocco leaves to it too, so basically its a cheap way of getting high and some instant energy like coffee shots
The bettle nut you tried with the leaf is chewed for stimulating the brain and creates a sense of euphoric and alertness and also function as an antidepressant. However prolonged use creates addiction
The white paste is called "chuna" in hindi & "shun" in the traditional language in Shillong. It burns the tongue so never eat the "qwai" ( betel leaf & lime) without removing most of the paste.
Actual plums from the Northeast are smaller. Sweet limes are bigger. How far I know there is almost no sweets originated in the Northeast. But you can find something similar like food eaten as breakfast. In the Northeast we do justice to our foods 😉. You'll find the good and genuine taste of your vegetables or meat. We don't enhance our food with the help of masala/Indian spices. We also eat lots of vegetables with or without meat.
The green leaf with beetle nut you ate, that actually works like a mouth freshner. People here most of their time have this combination of beetle and green leaf after every meal. But for some it works like an addiction and also not good for health purpose. But i hope you enjoyed ❤!
You can eat the paan with beetle nut without the white thing. You are supposed to eat both the nut and the leaf together and chew and spit the juice out while keeping the solids inside your mouth and then again keep chewing them again. Repeat this process and spit the juice out 3-4 times, then the mixer starts tasting good. And then you can you can chewing it and then swallow it eventually. we aren't supposed to throw the whole thing..just spit out the juice because in the beginning it tastes bitter but by repeating the spitting out process for 3-4 times, the bitternesa goes away and it starts tasting good. It's healthy if you eat in moderation like once a day.
You had betelnut known as Kwai in Khasi language, the green leaf - tympew& the white lime known as shun . The small diced potatoes are known as Phan sdieh( fried potatoes)
Why dont you try the momo opposite that van who carry pine apple it is a street food but it is very famous here in shillong because the taste is sooo good

The leaf itself is not bad at all. It does taste a bit peppery but just the leaf is good for health. The betel nut may cause hallucination to some. The white paste is edible lime. But yes one has to eat a very small quantity of it. Betel leaf is chewed almost all over India after meals or some eat it all day every 2 to 3 hrs. In other parts of India it is also made into a sweet condiment by adding rose jam, fennel seeds ect. A lot of our grand parents in India consumed a lot of betel leaf. The leaf is very high in vitamin B complex. And the edible lime is a very cheap calcium supllement. Next time you find a Pan shop try the sweet version without tobacco and betel nut. You might like that.

@@NayanJB I mentioned Nepal
Aloo sabzi (potato curry ) + Poori combo is perhaps one of the most popular potato dishes in India.
Also , the leafy thing which Noah ate , is called as Paan (betel leaf ), Paan is generally eaten as a mouth freshner after a meal, just like fennel , it is said that eating paan after a meal is good for digestion and also is a great mouth freshner
Lastly, that white pigment is called chuna (limestone) , limestone is good in calcium and along with betel leaf is considered good. The seller told to reduce its quantity because if eaten more, it can cause cuts in mouth
Happy eating😊

The leaves are paan or betel leaf which are acidic in nature & the white paste is calcium hydroxide i.e slaked lime. Too much slaked lime can cause burning of the tongue.
The seeds are areca nuts which are the psychoactive ingredient. The combination along with fennel seeds is said to be good for digestion after a meal. However some people are addicted to it primarily for the areca nuts.

The white paste is called "chuna" in hindi & "shun" in the traditional language in Shillong. It burns the tongue so never eat the "qwai" ( betel leaf & lime) without removing most of the paste.
The white paste is actually lime

You better try that fry chiken leg from fast food and pogo guysss
