Over two years ago during the height of Monster Hunter World's release, I stumbled upon this video and this channel. I think that you're one of the people that helped to solidify my passion and love for game design and game development. Thank you. The growth and development of this channel, and your game Patch Quest gives me immense motivation to work hard as a software engineer so that one day I too can express my own appreciations and ideas about game design and game systems.
Wow this only got 4K views that’s so sad lmao. Good work dude. I’ve been enjoying tf out of this game and this was a good breakdown of what makes it so addictive!
@@muchiosgracias4 Late reply but yes it’s very active. They might have been talking about MHGU (on switch) which is a remaster of Monster Hunter Generations that was on 3DS. I personally love both, but there is a huge difference in graphics and detail in the environment on generations. But yes, MHW is beautiful
3:45 That reminds me of drinking potions in Zelda: Skyward Sword, which also left you vulnerable. Then, in Breath of the Wild, Nintendo said "F*** risk, now you can eat an entire buffet from the pause menu. Also, you can carry an entire buffet in your pocket." Great video!
I wouldn't consider the changes made from old MH to MHW make any game bad. MHW can have a map like this now because it has the hardware. I do enjoy MHW and the scoutflies more out of convienience, but I also like the paintballs. They're charming in a goofy way.
@@Raylightsen not clunkiness, just slower than most other games. Everything has weight to it, so you can’t just run up to a monster and cycle through combos for free-that’s a sure fire way to get knocked flat on your rear. Think of it like a fighting game: every move has end-lag, and spamming moves like a total noob-especially with characters (weapons) on the heavier end-is just going to end in you being at the utter mercy of any opponent who has a better grasp of what they’re doing than you do (the monsters). Here’s some advice from PunkDuck if you’re beginning with World or Rise: “Fuck the quests, fuck the town, fuck everything, you go to the training room and beat the ever-loving shit out of the dummy until you find a weapon you like.”
Apparently this needs to be said. Monster Hunter World is slow and deliberate compared to other fighting games. That is not the same as clunky. Clunky is having overly strict input requirements or a forced disconnect between intent and action. Not letting you cancel out of moves is a design choice to force you to be more deliberate and experience the back and forth “dance” that is monster hunter. You are fighting a behemoth with a sword, you are not the chosen one, it will kill you if you slip up, will you embrace the lifestyle of the hunter and leverage the advantages you have to come out on top? Or will you complain that the game isn’t anime enough because you can’t just hold your arms out to automatically grab the monster by it’s face and stop it mid charge
I'm struggling with it as well. I want to like the game, but the combat... At least if there was some animation cancelling, sometime I can't even roll to evade, etc.
@@PromethorYT The combat is like that by design; its supposed to make you consider your next move before committing, but it also depends on what weapon you're using. Sword and Shield or Dual blades have more reactive/mobile gameplay. Greatsword is very punishing to play but hits like a truck. Definitely not everyones cup of tea though.
@@JoeDraws5 Yes i'm very aware its designed this way, I still feel like that kind of combat is clunky. I feel like there must be other ways to make combat challenging and difficult than having long animation lock for each attacks.
Simple yes, but not ass. Witcher 3 has something MHW doesn't have. Heart, soul, story, and adventure. Which is its charm. MHW has its charm which is the combat. Don't be such an extremist. Have a lovely day and try to smile.
@@Silent_Shadow story is one thing, but are you really trying to say that there is no heart and soul behind monster hunter? if so, that is an absolutely preposterous thing to say and it's completely false
I wouldn’t say ass. I enjoyed Witcher 3s combat. Except every damn sword or axe is the SAME DAMN MOVESET. Monster hunter on the other hand has the unique weapons selection that plays completely deifferently from one another. I can use all weapons but find that I’m more attracted to the switch axe. I WAS a hardcore CB user at one point. Then I discovered that I’m actually great with th switch axe as well
@@marcheharvey2301 Don't lie to yourself. A lot of the difficulty of the game basically comes from the "clunkiness". It hasn't really changed all that much since older monster hunters. Don't worry I haven't found a game with good rpg melee combat. (not talking about fighting games like tekken)
I really wish that in the future, the developers for the Monster Hunter series, will take the combat's game design more seriously. Tachimawari in the series has actually kinda always been a joke unfortunately. There's no real way to not take damage reliably, unless of course you spend all of your time running around, using a gunner weapon. Too many monsters have attacks that aren't telegraphed enough. Add to the fact that you have to constantly sheath/unsheath your weapon, your dodges have only a couple of i-frames when a lot of the enemies' attacks have too many frames to evade. The game is made so that it isn't you who completely determines the outcome of the hunt, but rather your armor rating and statistics, when it should be that stats and perks only add to your own skill. Stupid things like iai spirit slash and the greatsword tackle, taking direct damage (not red damage) somehow found it's way into the game. Instead they rather have you rely on finite items and micro manage outside of hunts. I believe the only reason MHW became so popular in the west is because of good graphics, the hunting loop, released on consoles, and the whole thing is meant to be a shallow spectacle instead of a well thought out game that centers on combat.
@@mattpweston There are literally no hit runs for every single monster. In fact, there are literally naked (no armor) playthroughs, which makes your argument bunk. You are, and I mean this emphatically, just absolutely shit at the game and are making stuff up to defend your bruised gamer ego.

Is the combat similar to devil may cry as it was developed by capcom?
