That plesioth trauma is so relatable :') Who remembers the tail hitting you 6 meters below from it ? The broken hitbox from his flank ? The frustration of seeing it not going out of the bloody water after having already used every possible sonic bomb AND the components to craft them ? I swear this monster is still haunting my nightmares.
@@Voltron1232 I'm giving you another : Black Gravios desperately not dying after 48 minutes of blindly hitting it, and you losing the game bc of the clock knowing for SURE it would die with like 8 few more hits you couldn't give him because of his belly breathing fire smoke
@@Voltron1232 Or better : running after an invisible Chamelos through the map for fifteen minutes because the marker ran off and losing your mind . Oddly enough, I miss that game for those moments
Good video, explains a lot of key concepts that make the designs of MH so great. Small error in the description, Shantien's theme is from Frontier, not Generations. I would add that the speed of a monster's attack is absolutely critical to enhancing the unique MH gameplay. Many monsters (especially in older games) have attacks that start extremely quickly, but only hit in a certain direction or at a certain distance. For example, Rajang's punches begin nearly instantly, but only hit in front of him. This reinforces the visual design of the monster, as standing in front of a giant, jacked monkey should probably be dangerous! Importantly, this also asks the player to play both in the present and in the future. Dodging through the current attack may get me a free hit, but it will put me in front of Rajang! Do I have enough time and mobility to escape afterwards? Can I block the upcoming punches with my current stamina? Can I stagger the monster to stop the punches entirely? Or is it best to simply pass on the free hit and reposition? Having one or two moves like this can add significantly more depth to the other attacks, as it creates fluctuating levels of risk and reward for the player's different defensive responses to those other attacks. It also incentivizes prediction, smart positioning, and methodical play, all of which are key tenets that have historically defined and distinguished the MH combat. I always love to discuss the small details that make MH great, so hopefully some of this was interesting to you! I'm still learning more about MH myself. Right now I'm playing Freedom Unite again, a fantastic game where many aspects of the series are at their peak.
i know i'm posting this on a three year old video, but i like this one quite a lot and wanted to thank you for actually putting captions on your videos instead of using the auto generated ones. it's a struggle for me to hear what people are saying and the captions are a life saver.

I get such a rush of excitement when I see a new upload from this channel, it's clear how much effort goes into all of your videos, and they always turn out fantastic.
Phenomenal video. The work put into this is admirable, and its well paced and structured throughout. As someone who watches a lot of monster hunter related content, analytical video essays tend to be pretty rare but this was excellent and definitely something I wanted someone to talk about more in-depth.
Really good choice of topic for your Monster Hunter video, love the research you've put into it, and it was a well-timed video for me to watch when I've been thinking so much about plotting and structuring lately
Brill video! I know nothing about game design but it feels like you really got into the head of a designer when making your points. As an MH player I'll definitely be considering the design choices of whatever I'm fighting (unless I'm being eaten alive) (or fighting Tigrex)
great video! I feel like a lot of people get overwhelmed by the amount of information there is in this game when making videos like this about monster hunter but this really hit the spot!
A thing I love about these games is that the easiest way to beat the aggressive monsters is to be more aggressive than them and not give them a chance to do their thing it really makes getting better at the game feel rewarding
Mezza is back! Yeah! Now, first of all: The editing is, again, On Point (26:21 I love you!) As you can probably tell from my last sentence already: I have no Idea, what the name of the monster was. And I have heard it. A lot. As someone unfamiliar with the franchise, I had a massive problem to follow you while you were blatently switching between the Dragons to describe, Queen had 3. and 4., King had 2. and 6., queen (or was it King) had 7. I guess and King X Tower on G8 Check Ma I am getting off course. It would have helped massively if you would have structured this part in any way. What first comes into my mind is a little chart always having Queen (with a little picture :3) on the left and King on the right, so whenever you point out the King has poison on its claws I have it centered around his flying and his dash and him being the worst Figure on the boa I seriously cant stop Im sowwy. It's ofcourse jsut nitpicking (is that a word?) but I will just nitpick everything apart until you become a professional main-job youtuber so prepare ;P Anyway: A fantastic Video. I remembered back before 2000. I was a little kids. Just Playing the games and having fun . Now I can find videos that expand on mechanics and lore and development of video games . My own son now gets to have the plethora of information on what ever games I buy em. Truly games have expanded farther than just playing the games. Thank you for the video man , good job!
To be fair to Banbaro's questionably logical invader status, moose are fucking hardcore. Not only is it possible for a car to crash into a moose and the moose will come out better off than the driver, they're also known to *dive* in search of food - which makes the *killer whale* one of their few natural predators.
Regarding the ending of the video, I'm gonna make some totally sick D&D monsters now. This video was great for giving me ideas on how to spice up combat encounters
Honestly the best part about this is that you can use this for any form of boss. I hate to compare but as a souls fan mh does bosses far better. Monster hunter literally does tough but fair bosses better than Elden ring. Sekiro is still number 1 tho
As someone who loves the old games and hasn’t played world, I think world was probably the best choice to demonstrate the points being made since it’s the most detailed and therefore easiest to see the argument illustrated to the layman. Plus, I didn’t get the impression that he sees the older games as lesser for not being as detailed (unlike an annoying vocal group in the fanbase). I’m just glad that this video helped further convince me that Rise monsters still feel like MH monsters through and through, despite objections from some people.
I put in like 200 hours for one of the MH DS games, and while I had fun playing it I know I reallllllly don't have time for it now 😅. I'm sure you were joking about a Pokemon review but I can still hope...
