@@MACHOMANRANDYSAVAGE2211 this is one of those songs that will never ever fail to move me to tears, i don't understand how anyone could thumbs down this. perhaps it was in error
I'm 30 and have been listening to this since I was 10 my dad loved it, I can't believe how much just love to drink and listen to whole album makes me think of me dad everytime, his songs "stories' have made me grow as a man and as a father
I've been listening to Harry for over 30 years, and I was born after he died. This may be the truest statement I've ever read regarding Harry. His songs have changed as I've grown from child listening to dad's music, to an adult living my own life. Thank you for the simplification as to why his songs make me cry.
I was sitting at a set of lights on my way back to work from lunch when the news came on and announced that Harry Chapin had died. I burst out crying, stalled my car and held up traffic and had the worst afternoon ever. I'd been listening to his music since the '70's, loved his music then and still love it now in 2023. It is almost 42 years ago and I still play his music often. My name's not Sue but whenever I'm in a taxi I always sing this song to myself. What a tragic loss to we older music lovers.
The one he will always be remembered for. This song drove radio stations crazy. They lost money on adverts because the song was too long for their airtime, but the public demanded to hear it.Harry and Gordon Lightfoot, I was lucky I was born in the 50's.
there should be 23 million hits on this song........this is one of the greats from the 60s and 70s...I saw CHapen in concert about 5 times...mostly in central park NYC ....RIP Harry..
This song put me right there in a crowded busy City street raining on a bunch of strangers everyone in a hurry and he's taking back 10:15 years or so. He had such a gift for visuals and away with words that cannot be denied rest in peace Harry
He was a great part of the soundtrack to my life. I'm 66 now and declining faster each year . but I still recall Harry onstage in my town. Years ago. I cried most of the way thru but it was a good cry. When he sang this I was ok till he came to the end and I lost it. My friends thought I was having a stroke and were so worried. But it turned out ok And I still go flying so high when I'm stoned.
Outstanding. Makes me remember my teenage years and getting stoned. Now I'm 65 and I'm still getting stoned. Love you Harry I will always love this song
Sitting here the day Lightfoot died. I then remembered this song. It really digs into our soul. Love this lyric. RiP both of you. She walked away in silence, it's strange how you never know...we'd both gotten what we asked for..such a long ..long time ago
Just a great song, and has one of my all time favorite lyrics: And she said, "How are you Harry?" I said, "How are you Sue? Through the too many miles and the too little smiles I still remember you." The mark of a great songwriter is being able to paint a scene in your mind with few lyrics, and Harry was one of the best at that. This entire song you can picture in your mind, and takes very few lyrics to do that, just brilliant.
Harry Chapin One Of The Greatest Men On Earth December 7, 1942 - July 16, 1981 While waiting outside of Colden Auditorium at Queens College, after a canceled concert, I met and had a few words with the man who was to have given the concert. In my eyes, one of the greatest men on Earth. He was a dedicated humanitarian who fought to end world hunger. He was the co-founder of World Hunger Year or WHY, now known as WhyHunger, a wonderful and efficient non-profit that is still helping feed hungry people today. He was instrumental in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977. He was a man that was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award in the United States, the Congressional Gold Medal. He was a man who performed benefit concerts for hundreds of worthy organizations during his career. He was a man who raised more than 3,000,000 USD for those in need in the last six years of his life. He was a man that donated to charitable causes an estimated 33% of the revenues from his indefatigable schedule of 200 plus concerts performed each year. Besides his tireless humanitarian work, he was an accomplished and creative renaissance man that during his life was nominated for the following illustrious awards: Oscar, Grammy, Peabody, Emmy, and Tony. He was a man that I was lucky enough to have seen in concert a handful of times between 1975 and 1980. He is a man that I still miss today. His name was Harry Chapin. by Mark R. Several members of his band, including his brother Steve and John Wallace, have gotten back together, and are touring under the name THE HARRY CHAPIN BAND!
Harry had a way of striking a cord that attached to a part of your life you didn't even know was there. He also had an incredible on stage persona . It was almost as if you were on stage with him, or he was in the seat next to you. I saw him perform one night when there was an electrical problem delaying the show. He came out into the audience, greeted people and sang a cappella to entertain the audience until things got straightened out on stage. At the end of every show, he would come to the back of the hall and sign autographs, sell and sign books of his poetry and just enjoy the crowd. I thought I lost a family member when he died.
I was 16 years old when this song was all over the radio, introducing all of us to one of the greatest musical story tellers ever. Roughly 5 years later Harry played at my University. It was magical. This album has been a favorite for years, helping to re-create that concert evening.

He came to Marquette, Michigan in 1977. His brother was playing the piano and it wasn't working right. He stopped and said something like, "Is that a blue piano? I've never seen Tom play a blue piano before." They replaced it in about a minute while he talked to us. It was so much fun. He did all the classics and the live version of "Dance Band on the Titanic" just can't be replicated. I too, miss him. :(
"Another man might have been angry; another man might have been hurt; another man never would have let her go... I stashed the bill in my shirt." A testament to the realization that some dreams get dashed to reality, so you take what good comes out of a situation, however you can get it, and don't look back. Sometimes, you just... let it go.

True💗
I prefer his live music over studio.
Best live album ever because each performance equals or surpasses the original.
I might be repeating myself, I listened to this song as I drove cab in NYC....I was 22 then , way way older now but the memory remains
37 thumbs down?! What sorry excuse for a human being could ever thumbs down anything that such a good, talented saint like Harry Chapin did.

I disagree.... I heard this music as a 5 year old and was drawn to its power and honesty....Harry's pure honesty is so audible if your listening
I saw him in concert and got his autograph.. and a kiss. His music is food for the soul ❤️
One of the best songs from a legend who died way too young
Only the great die young. What a talent. I'm 60 years old and still find myself with his songs singing in my head. And I'm OK with that.

I fly so high when I'm stoned... this is a fav. I sing this golden oldie in my head too. But the falsetto gets me lol.
You and me both buddy I will be singing this in my grave
The Falsetto is Big John Wallace, who also sings as Mr Tanner...a wonderful voice.

The younger generation doesn't appreciate REAL music written by the artist that sang it
I find it hard to believe 42 people say they don't like this song. How could you not think it was anything other than great?
That’s because they lack the intelligence to recognize a song when they hear it.
