Harry Chapin - Circle

- "All my life's a circle;
Sunrise and sundown;
Moon rolls thru the nighttime;
Till the daybreak comes around.
All my life's a circle;
But I can't tell you why;
Season's spinning round again;
The years keep rollin' by.
It seems like I've been here before;
I can't remember when;
But I have this funny feeling;
That we'll all be together again.
No straight lines make up my life;
And all my roads have bends;
There's no clear-cut beginnings;
And so far no dead-ends.
Chorus:
I found you a thousand times;
I guess you done the same;
But then we lose each other;
It's like a children's game;
As I find you here again;
A thought runs through my mind;
Our love is like a circle;
Let's go 'round one more time.
Chorus "

Not sure if anyone will read this. But I grew up listening to Harry Chapin with my grandmother. (This album in particular) it is what made me want to pursue a career in music. Harry Chapin is my grandmother's absolute favorite. We are losing her in hospice right now and she is in a coma. I pulled out my guitar and sang this for her one last time like she always loved. (She used to join in and add the little talking bits from this live version) it's safe to say I didn't make it far into the song. Once I hit the line "I've got a funny feeling we will all be together again" I lost it. A beautiful song. One that made me the man I am. And currently this song is playing on repeat in my grandmother's hospital room while she passes. Thank you Harry. For the memories. ❤
This album always does it for me too. I'm sure she could feel your love. all the best.
Sorry to hear about your grandmother♥️ My sister is battling stage 4 lung cancer and I am doing everything I can to keep her comfortable! So hard to see your loved ones suffer🙏 Harry's music deffinately helps with the pain♥️
Bless you and your Grand, Lost my mother last September she was 99 and 4 months, we had listened to this song together many years before and it came to me as I drove away to the Hospice location after she had passed, Thank you Harry!
I still have this on a working 8track still and i played the hell out of it since 1979
I read it friend. You will meet her again when it’s your time 🍀
RIP Harry Chapin. The man who first took action against world hunger.
My older sister introduced me to Harry-like him her life was cut tragically short but I will always remember us as two little girls on a swing belting out the chorus to this song.
This puts life and everything into perspective. Harry was a legend that left us too soon.
I want to dedicate this song to my Dad whom we lost six weeks ago. Love you Dad. 🌹😇🙏
He was a shining light and made the world a better place. I miss him greatly.
My dad used to play this album in the late seventies, on the turntable in our living room. He also used to play John Denver, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, and many more. John, Jim, and Harry are gone, but thankfully their music is still here.
Love all those guys, listen to them often
I have 3 copies of this album...LP, CD and about a year ago I saw another vinyl copy at a garage sale for $2. Will unload first free in a trade one day
I had the same preferences as your dad. A man of discerning tastes, obviously. I saw Harry live in Dublin. Unforgettable.
@@turbozman1 So do I
Love this with the band singing
Beautiful sit back and just listen love Mike singing
As I read all the beautiful comments from everyone tears are welling up in my eyes , I am from Long Island and Harry was not just a national hero he was a local hero to us , I always thought that he was such a kind man with a big heart helping feed the hungry and poor when he passed I actually did cry because I felt like I lost a family member , I still miss him terribly but always have good memories of him just by listening to his music that takes to the places in his stories .
I live on the other side of the country, and I felt the same when the radio announced his passing. I sat at my desk and sobbed.
I knew Mr. Harry, shortly after the album Vacancy was released. We had been filming a movie with the same album name. Unfortunately the movie was never produced; thankfully we still have his music and memories.
A great lose. Thank God for music.
How could anyone downvote Harry Chapin? Good lord.
@vala p i love your optimism, sadly i think it's just Harry's brother Bill.
What a TOTALLY PATHETIC COMMENT FROM OBVIOUSLY A LOSER WHO NEVER MADE IT IN THIS LIFE.....WHAT DID YOU DO TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS WORLD??????
In some ancient culture they say someone isn't truly dead until their names have stopped being spoken. We're still singing Harry's songs 50 years after he's gone.
Harry Chapin is a LEGEND and there will never be a better songwriter /singer ever again!
I agree I'm only 22 but he is my all time favorite
Their might be.....
Amen to that one. 🙏
Legend! Buuuut... never better...? That’s a push
He was fantastic.
My dad showed me this album when I was a kid. I'm 44 now. I can't listen to this album without crying. I miss my dad.
Me too, anniversary of his passing today
God bless you and your dad the song lives forever
i'm so sorry man. we're the same age and my always played this tape on trips. i hope that despite the tears you listen and remember your dad fondly
He was certainly one of our best. Who doesn't miss him!!!!!
Thanks !!!!!!!
im only 15 but he is one of my fav artists
Harry Chapin is a great story teller. Circle, Taxi, Cats In the Craddle. WOLD. I love them all.
❤
I saw Harry when I was a young man. Today I'm 68, with 2 grown daughters. This song has more meaning, every time I hear it.
My grandpa was good friends with Harry. He was distraught when he died, but he introduced me to his music. Harry is left a ripple on history, a legend
I am the same age as you. I never got to see him in concert. I did buy all his albums
Poet, philosopher, life coach ❤❤❤❤
We lost such an amzing treasure. This man would still be writing new material.
My dad raised me on Harry. I am 28 now, and I can recite every song of his easy. I wish more people my age appreciated him
I'm 23 and keep coming back, I couldn't agree more.
Every teaching program should have their students memorize the lyrics to Flowers are Red and really take the song to heart.
God bless you kid your dad had great taste in music and so do you I wish I could have turned my dad on to Harry Chapin before he passed. I am 66 and I will never stop listening to Harry Chapin
Anyone can sing, and Harry Chapin proved it! RIP Harry Chapin!
One of the best singers and songwriters in history
We used to go see Harry every summer at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in upstate New York. We would also travel anywhere we could to see his performances. When you saw Harry on stage, it wasn't like you were going to see a concert, it was more like you were enjoying a fun evening of music wih a friend. Harry's total dedication to the World Hunger Organization has blessed countless thousands (millions?) of people. You could find him wandering the halls of Congress on a regular basis petitioning for aid for the weary and downtrodden. Harry was an everyman with a heart and sentiment that will traverse across generations to come. To say any particular Chapin song is my "favorite" would depend entirely on which one I am listening to at the time. So much of his music causes one to go "Oooooo.... I love this song!". We miss you terribly Harry. Rest in Peace brother.
I went very year as well to SPAC
Im 29 from Australia n i love love love love these stories. My dad played them when I was a kid
Beautiful tribute man. Just beautiful.
I remember seeing him at the amphitheater at Ontario Place.
Spent lots of beautiful summer evenings watching concerts there.
The seasons spinning round again the years keep rolling by....
Harry put on the greatest live concert I've ever seen. He was able to make every person in an arena of 10,000 feel like he was singing just to them in the most intimate setting. I don't know how he did it, but he did.
Harry Chapin was a one of a kind. Thank you for what you gave.
I am home alone so I sit and enjoy and cry if I want to he has been with me since forever I am 70 years old
Harry Chapin is somthing I grew up on. I love him and my father.
I get chills when I hear this.
Love how it starts sweet and sentimental, then breaks out into boisterous joy at the end.
Harry Chapin's legacy is alive and well. I'm 77 years old and didn't even learn about his music until a couple of weeks ago when I listened to Georgie Wilson's radio show on CFUV - she knows all the music going back decades. I was too busy raising four teenagers and teaching school during the 70s and 80s so missed out on a lot of the music that he sings about in "Remember When the Music" ... what a superhuman being he was - his spirit inspires the best in us even forty years after he left the planet. He knew love - how to receive and how to give.
This record is a monument in my life and always made me appreciate those times appreciate this man and his band and always made me wish I had been there!
One of the most beautiful songs ever! “We may all bé together again”
My mom sang me to sleep with this as a little kid. Still makes me feel safe.
Alway"s loved this guy"s music and at 2am. on a Saturday morning,I could give Michael a run for his money on this!
Please put Harry in the Writer`s Hall of Fame.
My younger brother played this to me when I was 22 and I have loved this albulm since then I'm now 54 and I've played it since then.
Miss him. That song is going to be at my service when I die.
+Sally Guiney me, too.
My grandfather passed away on dec 7. we had this song playing in the church when people starting walking into the church the day of his funeral. Very fitting song!!
+Jeff Reynoso ....I should say so,,, since 12/7 is Harry Chapin's birthday
Me, too, Sally
It's certainly on my list..
The greatest storyteller there ever was! My all time favorite
This is so Harry Chapin. I miss him still.
+Edmund Vitale you miss me more, beeott
Always will --the best love him for ever
Just what the fuck you talking about,you ignorant stupid fool! Do you relish the thought that people think you are as dumb as a stump
You know Edmund that you can block this idiot, Tayzed Lubber
Do you remember
My all time favorite Chapin song. You just can't get the same feeling listening to a studio version. Harry was certainly at his best live. I dare anyone not to smile as he leads the whole group into the finale. Are you ready to feel it?
What a wonderful writer, musician, man.
I saw Harry in 1980 and 1981 in Jacksonville FL at 20 years old. I'm 64 now and have yet to attend a concert where the plain joy of life filled the atmosphere.
This the first of many Harry Chaplin albums we bought. I can’t remember if we bought it before or after seeing Harry in concert.
Today I am sitting next to her hospital bed playing this to her on my iPhone.
Thank you.
I have great memories of this song .. riding in the car listening to this whole cassette tape with my parents .. I just lost my dad January 8th .. my best friend .. i can still hear him singing ... I'm gonna miss u pops 💔💔
One of the greatest storyteller of our generation. I’m grateful for his cats in the cradle which reminds me to spend quality time with my two kids, seeing them grow up with love and compassion
The circle of life passes by. We wonder why. The circle goes by. I love this song. Harry Chapin. I've missed you all my life. Since my teens. 67 now. Take care up in Heaven my friend in music.
All time underrated great!
Under-Rated my arse...Harry was well respected by Press, Peers
and Fans...
He was fairly covered in the 70’s and beyond
I loved Harry Chapin! I got to shake his hand in November of 1979 after a concert at Huntington High School--I think it was there and then--and I got to tell him my favorite song I liked by him--it was his too-and I even got to take his picture twice--with my Minolta X-G1=and to take Tom Chapin's picture--as well as Harry Chapin's Father to boot! Harry was funny, and the joke he made as we were waiting to get in on a chilly Wed nite was classic,
Harry Chapin just makes me think back to high school and happy times. Its impossible to be stressed while listening to his many GREAT songs he just brings peace to my life
Yeah, like "The Rock."
Showing my age. I got this vinyl in 1985.
I saw Harry in concert and got the album in 1975. 😊
This was one of my favorite songs among others. I had his Live Album. Thank you for the Beautiful memories in the songs.
I love this song for so many reasons! I grew up listening to Harry, Jim Croce, Judy Collins, the Mama's & the Papas, Peter, Paul, & Mary, etc. (my parents were 70's "freaks" [kinda like hippies, but different lol]), and Harry has always had a special place in my heart. Plus, this song always struck me as a perfect Wiccan/Pagan anthem (if you know anything about Wicca, listen to this song, and it kinda jumps out at ya) It actually might be more like a helix or double-helix, so the circles get harder to tell apart
Being born in 1970 I only knew his music as a child. I can't believe how powerful his music is. Circle, dreams go by, W.O.L.D. Just unbelievable. If his sings can't bring emotion out in you I feel very sorry for you.
Circle. Maybe the best song ever. Few lyrics but powerful as hell.
had the privilege to see HARRY IN CONCERT ABOUT A DOZEN TIMES
First time i saw him in concert, this was one of the last songs they sang. That final chorus, he had the whole damn place singing at the top of our lungs! Absolutely the BEST!! Miss ya Harry!
+b3j8 we all miss him, bring yer own beer
Same here in Indianapolis.
Micheal has a lovely timbre in his voice
He was so great, truly awesome.
A great 1970s balladeer.
Love this song 😄😄😄 cats in the cradle too.😀😀😀 December 7 1942....to.....16 July 1981.tragic car accident..goodbye song master..R.I.P.😉😉
Have never forgotten this magnificent story teller and musician since first hearing " Taxi " Thank you for posting this version of " All my life's a circle " Love hearing Mike, the cello player, giving his all. I miss Harry and we are lesser with his leaving us too early.
one of my favorite Harry songs
I have always admired HC - his music and his voice was unique and - his circle still lives on
I was scheduled to attend his concert at Eisenhower Park on Long Island the day he died. It was like a punch in the gut. I had seen him several times before at Westbury Music Fair and I felt a kinship toward him, much like all of you.
The greatest of all troubadours. Miss him but we still have “Circle”
Best singer song writer ever
After all these years I still miss Harry and his music. I saw him a couple of times at Massey Hall in Toronto in the 70's. My girlfriend of the day Ann had several songs that were ours that we shared. I miss Harry and my girl Ann. Thank you Harry for your songs and Ann for your love
2020 in February. Chilly in Florida. I still miss Harry and this warms my soul.
This is my fav Harry Chapin song. My, how I still miss him!
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite singers.
Listening to this on the 40th anniversary of his death. Several weeks before I was born. But I'll catch you when the circle goes around again.
The Big Chief showed me Harry in the mid-80'. I was in grade school. Chapin's story telling is second to none. Thank You Dad, for showing me Harry a long time ago.
One of my all-time favorite songs. If there's music at my funeral one day, I want this song to be part of it.
Also, I used to teach American Sign Language and this one was a favorite. It's beautiful and fun and the whole class could come along with the refrain.
Miss ya, Harry, but your stuff still lives. :)
Harry you were right, life is a circle, I'm now 72.5 yrs old. Thank you, RIP
what a sense of humor.
I miss Harry! I am a teacher and we are playing "Flowers are Red" at our next staff meeting.
You all are so blessedyoou all be well enjoy
Harry Chapin
One Of The Greatest Men On Earth
December 7, 1942 - July 16, 1981
While waiting outside of Colden Auditorium at Queens College, after a canceled concert, I met and had a few words with the man who was to have given the concert. In my eyes, one of the greatest men on Earth.
He was a dedicated humanitarian who fought to end world hunger. He was the co-founder of World Hunger Year or WHY, now known as WhyHunger, a wonderful and efficient non-profit that is still helping feed hungry people today. He was instrumental in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977.
He was a man that was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award in the United States, the Congressional Gold Medal. He was a man who performed benefit concerts for hundreds of worthy organizations during his career. He was a man who raised more than 3,000,000 USD for those in need in the last six years of his life. He was a man that donated to charitable causes an estimated 33% of the revenues from his indefatigable schedule of 200 plus concerts performed each year.
Besides his tireless humanitarian work, he was an accomplished and creative renaissance man that during his life was nominated for the following illustrious awards: Oscar, Grammy, Peabody, Emmy, and Tony.
He was a man that I was lucky enough to have seen in concert a handful of times between 1975 and 1980. He is a man that I still miss today.
His name was Harry Chapin.

He also gave 50% of his net to donate to combat world hunger. He did that for years before he died. One of the best ever.
I had this album. Harry was a teller, not just of stories, but of life. RIP
road trips when i was younger with my dad we listened to Harry the whole time, my opinion the greatest story teller in music.
Louisville Slugger - me too!
It's not a roadtrip without Harry , even today!
Classic....not listened to Harry for a few years now.
Saw him in the UK 1979/80...pure brilliance
One of my all time favorite songs.
World Hunger Year was our North Star at the University of Waterloo around 1979-80 ... thank you Harry. Thank you for coming to activate us. You are extraordinary.
Harry was the ultimate story teller. His songs were all stories from his and others lives. Yes he is gone but there is a little of him that is in all of us. Harry rest well knowing all the lives you have and continue to touch new ones. May the circle never be broken.
Beautiful song ❤
First of all, I want to echo all of your sentiments to one of the great artists of our time. I had the privilege of seeing Harry live back in 1977 at Loras College in Dubuque, IA., and what a thrill! Harry Chapin playing at this small college in Iowa... He was such an amazing and gifted talent with so much love to give. And give he did... we miss you Harry!
In 1975 I was in high school. We had to do a service project. It was world hunger year I had been listening to Harry for a few years already told learning about Harry envolvement we jumped at the chance. Through that we actually got to meet him and listen to him talk about world hunger..and amazing man who was taken way too soon
I couldn't agree more..his is Americas treasure... I met him once and he was a true gentleman RIP Harry
Such a wonderful person in every way!
I absolutely love harry chapin and his band.
I saw Harry Chapin every summer at the Ontario Place forum in Toronto. I was always the highlight of the Summer. My friends thought I was nuts. Saw his last show at the O'Keefe Centre just before he past. I remember he was in the lobby promoting one of his causes. I made a small donation and he thanked me as I passed. I was really sad when I heard what had happened in New York. Glad I got to see him so many times live.
You know. I have to say harry chapin was the greatest story teller with his music.... this song is my most favorite.
All of these songs make me miss my upbringing in upstate NY. Why??????
Love every song on this Album
Harry Chapin was an amazing singer songwriter my brother introduced his music to me . He saw him live in Glasgow but sadly he died soon after . His music will always live. on 🎸🎶🥁🎻🎶🎹d
I found Harry in 1972. I'm 60 now and still like to listen to his music. This is one of my favorites (along with Mr Tanner and so many others). He's gone physically but his message remains.
Love this song. Love Harry! Luckily, I got to see Harry in concert 3x!
I listened to top 40 music on the radio. Harry Chapin's songs were too long, so they didn't get much radio play. There were two exceptions that became too popular for radio stations to ignore them. These were "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Taxi". So, I knew Harry Chapin by these two songs, unaware of the many other Harry Chapin songs. I think Harry had developed a following of his concertgoers, but I didn't live in an area where he held concerts. Also, his albums were probably readily available, but I didn't buy much music. When one song became popular, it was fairly common for listeners to buy an album containing the song, rather than just the single. Then, they got exposed to the other songs which might have become popular if they hadn't been so long and shunned by the stations. Short songs let the stations fit in more commercials.
My first exposure to his other songs was tuning in one of his concerts on PBS, by chance, in the 1980s. While viewing the concert exposed me to his other music, I really didn't pick up on it until much later, when Napster came of age. Then I had access to just about every song Harry did, and I found out how much I really enjoyed his music. "Circle" became my favorite. "Taxi" has a follow up named "Sequel". I think it is better than the original "Taxi", but "Sequel" would have no meaning without "Taxi" preceding it. How true in real life! I even met a real life "Sue" living with her husband in an expensive home, hosting a Halloween party that I happened to get invited to. Some time later, they had split up and she was living in an apartment. I think he married her for her body and she married him for his money, but, when they tried to live together, they found out that they weren't right for each other.
I think many men have had experiences like the one in "Better Place to Be". "I Wanna Learn a Love Song" is great. And, there are so many more wonderful Harry Chapin songs. What a shame that his life was cut short when he was only 38 years old.
Through Napster, I actually met a fan of his that had tickets to the concert that he was to play in the evening of the day that he died.
I’m also from Long Island and still love his music
Such a beautiful song.Timeless!
what I wouldn't go back in time and see Chapin live.
I did. Truly amazing. You WILL learn to sing along.
greatest ever in person he truly loved the audience.
SUCH AN EMOTIONAL SONG, SOO MEANINGFUL 😢😢😢
I was turned on to Harry, when I was 14 years old. Youth is very impresionable. I have never strayed very far from the stories he has told me.
My first Harry show was 1978 East Lansing Mi... Still the best show I've ever seen..
ive listened to Harry since I was 3 my nana told me I would always sing his songs at home im now 23 and I still listen to him and sing to his song love his music he was a great guy its sad that all the good singers in past years have died like this one and the likes of jonnhy cash, MJ, The beetles, Elvis, along with many others
We are grateful for the years he had. Some greats didn't have even that. Buddy, for example.
As with Harry, we'll always wonder what could ...
what Should Have Been?🤔
Harry makes a song that pulls the strings til it rains, then he takes that song & makes it SHINE...
those guys aren't roadies, they handle the sound & lights & sing -& a nod to Seals & Crofts - how cool is that?
So moist eyes dry and how can you not get up & sing along. Then you realize it's gone and I'm alone in a misty darkness, in circles going round again... So I'll just hit replay on this merry go round sing along with Harry...
Thanks, for sharing this GREAT live slice of a great life!
tremendous song from a tremendous talent and from a wonderful , wonderful live album
This album was my all time favorite by him. I just love his voice in this better than the studio versions for most of them. He is greatly missed.
Such a sweet and timeless song!
Remember him in concert in Fort Wayne Indiana one night back in 1979. My girlfriend at that time got us tickets. Turned out to be one of the best concerts I ever saw!!
Saw him in Indianapolis.
Too bad they didn't put our version of "Circle" on that album. I seriously believe nearly every person was singing by the end! Damn good show!
I saw him at the Follinger Theater in Ft Wayne about that same time!!
