    Definitely team physical books to write side notes and highlight.

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому +1

      YES! I used to write way more notes in the margin than I do now but I also keep a note in my notes app with my biggest takeaways which kind of replaced my margin notes.

  • @lizreadsandwrites

    These are great recommendations! I would also add “Building Thinking Classrooms” by Peter Liljedal. It is research based and has a ton of amazing information and ideas on how to get students to think rather than just regurgitate.

      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому

      Ahhh yes! That one is on my list to read! I've heard great things about it and can't wait to tackle it this year!

  • @karenfoot6513

    I don't use a highlighter when I read, instead I use sticky notes that stick out of the top of the book. I can make notes on the sticky note and I can easily return to that page.

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому

      That makes sense! I have when the sticky notes get torn and wrinkled over time 😂 But, I do take digital notes in the notes app on my phone/computer so I have easy access to the information later.

    Heyyy...
    I Love highlighting books as I read them, although I do love using Apple books to read and highlight them. Then I have digital access to it anytime and anywhere on any device I need.

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому +1

      I can totally understand that! Personally, I like taking digital notes as I read in my notes app so I have access to the information after.

    I have never highlighted a book!I just can't write in a book! I get a spiral notebook and take notes, or I use post-it notes. My college texts were like new! Great for resales! I hated when previous teachers would highlight or write in the margins in the teacher's manual! UGH! BTW, I have read 2 of the books you mentioned, Atomic Habits, and your book, of course!

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому

      LOL! I totally understand! I gave up on getting good value from my college textbooks during the resale 😂 It was always next to impossible to get a decent amount for them, but that could have just been at my college. But, I actually love getting books that others have highlighted or taken notes in because I find it interesting to see what stuck out to others.

    I always highlight... so I can go back. BUT... if I had the reference foldable, would I highlight? I don't know... I LOVE highlighting.

    I am a very avid reader to the point that as I am reading a book, I plan ahead for the next three so I am never left with nothing to read! That being said, this video was great! You already know that I read your book and while you say it's geared towards elementary, I can say from personal experience as a middle school teacher that I had many takeaways from your book. I'm very intrigued by the classroom management book. One thing I take pride in as a teacher is my classroom management, but I am always looking to try new techniques, so I think I will check this one out. I also have already listened to your podcast episodes about atomic habits and I keep saying I will read that book. I think it's time to pull the trigger and get it! A book I enjoyed was "Shattering the perfect teacher myth". Thank you again for all that you do and I can't wait for next week's video (and it will drop on my OFFICIAL LAST DAY!) Happy summer!

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому

      LOL! I'm the exact same way with books... at least this year! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video, even as a middle school teacher and I especially love hearing that you had some takeaways from my book too! Oh my gosh... you HAVE to read Atomic Habits! Seriously! It's 100% worth the read! I haven't heard of the Shattering the Perfect Teacher Myth so I'll have to check it out! Also, HAPPY ALMOST LAST DAY OF SCHOOL! 🎉

    Thanks for your recommendations, Michelle! I prefer physical books for professional development so I can annotate, but digital for fiction books that are just for fun. I have read three of the books you mentioned, but I would like to read them all. What I also want to read for next year is more books to support lower level English Language Learners, especially students who are new to the U.S. Also, I will be mentoring a first-year teacher next year, so I am going to buy her a copy of your book! Thanks for all you do. Have an amazing week! 💜

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому

      Aww, thank you so much as ALWAYS for watching and taking the time to comment Mandy! I really like that thinking... physical for nonfiction and digital for fiction. I feel like I could easily get down with that! Ahh... if you find any great books for supporting English language learners, please let me know! I'd love to check them out too. Also, oh my gosh... you're AMAZING!!! I'll have to send you another signed bookplate to add to it for her 🥰 I hope you have an amazing week too!

    I am a physical book lover and highlighter, page folder, and keeper of all books. Unfortunately, I still have most of my books from 25 years of teaching and need to purge! Help!

    • @lupitaochoa9529
      @lupitaochoa9529 Рік тому

      I pick a publication date. Usually 5 years. If it was published more than 5 years before my purge date, out it goes…especially if I haven’t referred to its contents in the past 2 years. It hurts sometimes, but I do it anyway.
      Be strong! 🤭🤭🤭

    • @PocketfulofPrimary
      @PocketfulofPrimary  Рік тому

      I totally understand this struggle! It can be so hard to pick and choose what to keep. But, you can always take notes on the book digitally so you have access to the information but then donate the book to another teacher!

    I am currently reading the Making Sense of Mathmatics for Teaching Small Group. I now have several ideas for more PD books for this summer. After the struggle of last year I want to read about more classroom management things going forward. I feel that the needs of my students have changed with COVID, so I need to change what I have done in the past.
    If you're looking for a non teacher book and you like thriller type books, I just finished The Last Mrs. Parrish and loved it. I found it on Reese Witherspoon's book list. It starts off a little slow, but it was good.

    I definitely love the recommendations. I’ve read your book and atomic habits. I’m a mix of team highlighter and writing notes in the available margins. I want to get my hands on the making sense of mathematics for teaching as I run my own tutoring website for math I want to build the foundation even stronger. I’ve got a book recommendation for you. Since you love building relationships with your students the book I recommend it Lifeline 65 by Ryan Stein. He is a current elementary school principal in my area who not only enjoys having good student relationships, but he also makes his school thrive on those relationships!
