Here’s maybe the coldest take ever: It’s useful to have skills. We’re alive, and during life for many reasons, it’s useful to have skills and build skills.
I'm someone that loves to try things out. I've had a lot of hobbies and a lot of jobs because I cant stop. But here’s the thing: there’s a secret to learning how to do new things and build skills, are you ready to learn it?
The secret is that the only skill you need in life is the skill to gain new skills. If you have the skill to gain more skills, you can have almost any skill you’d like.
And like most one liner, catchy sayings like this, it’s both profound and annoyingly simplistic.
But if you’ve never asked yourself, its worth asking and inquiring into, well, what does it take to learn a new skill? Separate of course from all of the specifics that that skill requires?
    Well, lets break it down.
You have to understand that skill building takes time.
You have to understand that skill building is a series of microscopic iterations to mastery.
You have to understand that skill building is inherently frustrating and if you can’t manage your emotions it’s going to be harder and less pleasant for you to learn the skill.

tremendous insight! thanks for sharing! currently enrolled in a general chemistry course and would like to be better skilled in that. curious to hear your thoughts on self study and if you think videos and self inquiry web reading can and should ever replace traditional textbook learning? Thanks for all your chem and life thought videos!

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Interesting question! I think web learning is kind of the best parts about a textbook and a lecture, it’s kind of like a talking textbook. It’s such an asset and I’m so glad it’s around now. For some skills I think it can almost replace being taught, but its biggest thing it cannot do is give you feedback on your work. I think for subjects as complex as chemistry it’d be nearly impossible to gain all the skills you need without someone scoring your work and helping you understand your mistakes. I think digital teaching is likely to become more and more common, but I hope it comes along with online teachers who are actively grading work and finding ways to engage students. Also I guess in this field there’s no way to digitize labs lol. Good luck in your course!

Hi There! Your channel has been a big help for me over the past semester. I’m posting this question here since it’s kind of awkward for me to ask anyone in person like an instructor or councilor. I want to work towards a career where I can learn how specific thoughts, behaviors and opinions function in the brain and use CRISPR (or whatever is appropriate) to see if specific thoughts, behaviors and opinions can be inhibited or changed. Can the desired changes be introduced through something like toxoplasma gondii? I’m really a History major at heart, but I can’t do that knowing there might be a possibility for a better quality of life. Ideally without the struggle of math courses or any other STEM classes I won’t really need. I wish there were someone smarter who could do this for me. But I'm not good with numbers or dealing with people so politics and business aren't options to find and pay somebody to do the hard work. Not like I would trust them, anyway. I’ve considered changing my major to psychology instead, but I’m not sure if that would qualify me to run that kind of research I want. I’m stuck. Either I’ll have a history-related career I’ll enjoy but it will also fill me with regret, or I can chance it and work several long, stressful years towards a career I may not like but it might offer the chance to be happy. I’m looking forward to hearing your advice.
