Oh my god! I've been locking my wrist all this time! I'm going bowling in an hour and this will be my focus and see if I can make some improvement. No wonder my spare ball is 18mph and my hook is 15.5 at best. I'm not locking the bend in my wrist for spares! THANK YOU!!!
Thank you JR. Mark Roth proves you right also. I learned from watching him, how to get power by hand action at the bottom of the swing. I admit the thumb took a lot of abuse at first, bit I developed a grip that works, and now at 75, I'm avg. 190 and have 6 300's just in the last 4 yrs. One 900 no tap in 2019. Keep up the good work.
@@b.j.thomas8606 I'm around 12.5 and 13. You could be just late in the pocket, or using the wrong ball for your style. Myself, I've found that a strong core and a pearl cover sanded to 5000, makes a longer smoother shape with good pin action. I stand 4 boards left of the last dot on the approach with my left shoe and aim around the 17 board at the arrows. At different stages of the game, I sometimes need to get around the side of the ball more. Lot of bowlers in my leagues are right side of the 10 board so my oil last longer. Good Luck.
@@guesswho9742 That is definitely far left! I'm sure something isn't hitting right even if my naked eye view shows a pocket hit. Could be the ball. Thing is i'll need to keep trying adjustments as I don't have the funds to buy very many balls (even if I did, finding soneone in my small town area to drill them would make it difficult). Thanks for your reply. Looks like we are very similar mph.
@@b.j.thomas8606 Ok, then try this, get some wet/dry type sandpaper, local auto parts place, get 4 different grade paper. Say 800 - 1000 - 1200 -1500. Wet sand the ball at 1500. Use no polish, clean after sanding with just clean water. Don't forget to wipe out the holes. I always practice a 3 game set before using the ball in league. Keep a paper log as to where you lay the ball down, and the results with pin carry. Do the test 4 times using a different grit each time. You may find a surface that works for you. You don't need to sand for very long. It takes just about 3 minutes for me. Don't worry about the ball getting small. LOL Once you find a surface you like, you only need to refresh it about once every 30 - 40 games. Depending on you hand release, the track will generally arch more after changing the surface the lower the grit. More drive through the pins is what you are looking for. Good Luck. JR will tell you the same thing.
@@guesswho9742 That should save a few bucks from the sanding pads. Tried your far left advice at Sr. League this morning. A strike or two per game but mostly ringng 10's. And I missed them. If I could convert single pin spares i'd be avg. close to 200. Instead. 125-133-126. Embarrassed. One thing is that practically everyone in the league bowls straight with plastic so no one will be playing my line. My teammate is a lefty. The resurfaced old Ebonite Stinger will come back pretty well. The Hyped Hybrid still wants to come back Brooklyn. Playing far left my speed was around 11.5. This was on the HPL lanes, not the dry wood in my hometown lanes. Thanks again!
I also have heard for proper rotation it is like your hand is going through where the ball used to be and it is not having your hand go around the ball which often causes the elbow to face out instead of staying inside.
Yeah I have had her watch a few of them. This came right on time. She is having release issues. Someone told she had to twist her wrist to make it curve. Problem is she ends up going way too far over the ball and ball never builds up any energy trying to fix its rotation.
Big hands do help. Longer spans cover more surface area of the ball. Elbow bend is not necessary for me. More revs are about the speed of the fingers through the ball.
thank you for this video, Im new to bowling and I have a knuckle that dislocates at the tip of my middle finger and is very painful. Been trying to figure out how to hook the ball and im just off. Starting my first league tomorrow so maybe I can attempt to get this right
Just last night I refined my game to finally fully grasp this concept. The ball feels weightless at the bottom of the swing, it floats across the "flat spot" of the swing as the thumb is coming out and the ball beginning to rotate off the hand. I struggled finding the right ball in the bag, and the right zone for the ball, but once I figured out the bottom of the swing, I was striking with every ball, regardless of the zone. My speed went up and I was more relaxed from the start of the approach thru the release. I didn't lose any revs at all and the power is going in the right direction preventing early mid lane reactions allowing for more direct angles to the spot.
Well explained. I bowel a monthly sweeper and this 90 year old man hooks the shit out of his ball. I know he has not got the strength to muscle a ball. I have autoimmune disorders and I have had 5 shoulder surgeries &4 of them on my right am I have no cartilage left on my humerus and my right shoulder hangs 3 in lower than my left because how bad it is broken down. I Throw a 15lb ball, I only throw 12 to 13 MPH & I have a beautiful hook. I don't need no more revs because I don't have the ball speed to matchmor revs. I have been out most this year due to hip replacement on my slide leg and other health issues but last year I had 2 300 games and a 299. If my busted up body can do it anyone can. I am starting to have some wrist problems but I really do not want to go to a wrist brace because I am use to snapping my hand under the ball at the bottom of my swing. I can't tell you in words just how useful your videos have been to me and my game. Thank you!
Thanks for another interesting video. Everyone knows someone in league, who throws a few shots and gives up. They do the same thing over and over again, and have no results. Then they jinxed themselves and have a horrible night. I never give up, and am always looking for the best strategy to succeed.
I've thrown pearl balls for most my bowling life. I just got a 500 grit attitude control drilled. I can not for life of me get that ball to my normal speeds. The fit doesn't seem as good as my passed balls but is it possible a 500grit ball could take 2.5mph off my ball speed?
Yes,....you must adjust either your "snowtire's" "thread" to finer grits or increase your tempo to manage your desired shape's breakpoint. Getting a lot of weak corners especially later in set?
Absolutely... 500 grit vs a polished pearl is like comparing work boots with slip- resistant soles to a pair of house slippers. One will slow down and grip immediately no matter what you do, and the other will skid out from under you on almost any surface...
I totally agree with this though I haven't practiced enough to replicate it and do it consistently. It's not about strength. You got guys on the tour like EJ tackett who is not a big guy by any means and still manages to put 500+revs on a ball. That's nuts.
Hey JR. You're right, too many unknowledgeable people giving unsolicited advice. I am lucky enough that I have enough natural arm strength that it's not really a lot of effort to hold the ball cupped even when throwing hard and fast. However, after watching hundreds or thousands of videos of pro bowlers, you can CLEARLY see how all the buildup to the release happens just moments before the release. I mean actions like you are talking about, cupping the ball by pushing you hand under it durng the downswing rather than trying to forearm curl it like weight lifting. Also the hand whipping to right behind the ball and snaping back out and around in the microsecond prior to the release. You really need to slow videos down to see it, and 60 frames per second published frames (youtube max), certainly makes it easier and clearer.
Just look at EJ Tackett. He weighs about 130lbs soaking wet. It's all technique not muscle. When the ball acts as a pendulum it becomes weightless at the bottom.
Proper positioning and the ball being in motion through your swing reduces the weight because of gravity. In other words the ball feels lighter and becomes easier to cuff. It’s hard for most people to stand in 1 spot a curl a 15# bowling ball. It’s timing with body, hand , elbow and knee driving forward toward the end of the slide that creates leverage. You cannot create leverage with your hand. The hand always wants to follow the body.
I call said people "muscle heads". They never seem to break a 160 avg and tend to "throw the ball" instead of rolling. I am 5'6" and use 16lb balls. It ISN'T A STRENGTH GAME.
It’s just like working out if it’s pain your doing something wrong. There’s a guy on my team that uses all this tape and mess I keep telling him his ball isn’t right but ppl don’t listen
If the ball is actually free-falling from the apex of the back swing, and the apex is timed with the push/pivot step, your shoulder/arm/hand are essentially just along for the ride and are applying zero force to the ball. Getting your hand under the ball just should be effortless if this is the case, since you are literally doing nothing else with those muscles. If you are muscling the swing in any way, shape or form, you will not be able to execute the modern release correctly.
JR -- Great video as always. Really like the simplicity and straight forwardness of your teaching. Side Note -- Really impressed and enjoyed seeing the Cross on your wall. Don't know if it was intentional or not but God Bless either way!

It does require good timing to get in the proper position at the foul line.

Good topic. To get under the ball, (and not need a lot of strength) you need to bend the elbow. What if one can't bend the elbow ?
