- For a story that has been around for over a century, Jack London’s The Call of the Wild still has a meaningful message for audiences today. This short adventure novel was published in 1903 and set mostly during the Klondike Gold Rush. Told from the perspective of Buck the dog, the novel demonstrates the literary influence of naturalism and individualism.

To me, this has got to be one of the best novels ever. The realism, the portrayal of nature, it's a beautiful book.
Cripes, I went and rented the 2020 film today. I don't think I've ever seen an adaptation miss the point of the original as much as this one did.
They didn't "miss" it though; they knowingly abandoned it. Jack London's bones are turning in his grave.
This is even worse than the horrible live action last airbender movie
Can't believe that the film with Charlton Heston wasn't included. That was the best version I think that was ever made.
I read the book back in 2020. It was one of the darkest, most depressing books I've ever read. And I couldn't deny Jack London wrote a masterpiece.
That's why I hate the Harrison Ford version so much, besides completely ruining the plot all the animals look absolutely fake as shit.
@@saljpal3 1935 version with Clark Gable is awesome. Not true to the novel, but true to the spirit. And its current in its depiction of life at that time. At the beginning of the movie a native American woman is shown pulling a dogsled into the town. I really wish that a new version with all the horrific flaw of humanity, and the best of the dogs, could be made. In search and rescue we say "trust the dog". I think that London was aware of this.
I read its translation in elementary-junior high school age...I just cannot fanthom why anyone will make a movie for kid out of this. The kid book now from this story is just...wrong.
1976 version is still my favorite.. even years later.
I'm surprised you did not include the 1972 version with Charlton Heston. I think there's a 2000 version as well but I haven't seen that one yet.
I just saw the 2020 film and if you can appreciate special effects and a wholesome, family-friendly feel, it's a fun watch. However, I was disappointed at how much it was sterilized to make it palatable. Parts of the novel were difficult to even stomach with how raw they were.
It's a great book! The 1996 version is the best.
Call of the Wild is one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, books and it pains me that the 2020 movie gets so much about it wrong.
Great video! I like the concise yet informative breakdown of each movie. I've read Call of the Wild and liked it pretty well. But I've not actually watched any adaptation of it.The gives me some good options. The '97 one looks especially interesting. (My favourite Jack London book is Captains Courageous )
Thanks for sharing.. This is really good movie. And so many lessons to learn. The power of friendship.. Heroic, brave, companion, leadership, and alert.. Seems the dog buck. 2020 . Is really good . . this movie .... Is worth it in Oscars... My kids really love this.. 🥰
YOU TOOK MY SUGGESTION! YAY!
Thank you! It's nice that you have something kind to say for each adaptation. I couldn't do that, especially when I am annoyed that they have deviated greatly from the plot.
Jack london?
Didn’t he also make white fang?
Yes he did.
Yea, i was amazed by that fact too
Thanks for sharing!
it's interesting how literature has to be changed to accommodate whatever zeitgeist is in the air at the time a movie is made. I doubt Native Americans could be the Bad Guys in a movie nowadays and the amoral brutality of Nature has to be toned down to make the kids not cry.
They also do it to give excitement to people who have already read the book.
You forgot the 1972 version.
I have long ago released any expectation that a Hollywood movie would true to all aspects of the books they pay so dearly to acquire. But I liked the latest Harrison ford "Based on" incarnation of Call of.
in my opinion the best adaption is the animated 1981 movie 'Call of the Wild, Howl Buck'
COTW 2020, great film but ending is the sadest out of all the other COTW, the narration and CGI just are so good but it's kind of sad
Thanks!!
i like both of them
Who and why did you need to rewrite the great book of the great writer Jack London? The authors of this film and Harrison Ford should fall through the ground with shame and return the fee from the film back to the audience.
Because it says “based on the novel” só it won’t be the same plot of the original (nowadays the chance of people complaining about the violence is too high) and Disney actually owns the studio, they probably wanted it to be as family friendly as possible so they could sell more.
So the Rutger Hauer 1996 version is best. Check.
The 2020 version was that phil collins could join for his soundtracks, but his healthy and age don't allowed.
You forgot the animated adaptaions :(
You forgot the animated adaptation from Toei. Came out 1981 I believe. It is a really faithful version of the novel, and is my fave version.
What breed is the 1976 version of Buck, please? Is he a golden saint mix?
It's the Charlton Heston version or nothing 😎
What kind of drugs were they on when they made the 2020 version
Was there one that was made after 1976 like in the 1980s because the dog in the movie I saw in the 80s looked like the one in the 1935 movie? The movie I saw looked like the 1976 movie.
85th Anniversary of The Call of the Wild (1935-2020)
the 2020 version is totally different from the original novel.it's a sheer call of the Disney(乐
1ce or twice in the 1980s I saw the 1976 one.
The 2020 version already looks dated. The dogs do not emote like real dogs
Whhat is the name of BOOK ?
Is this a serious comment? I can't actually tell.
In case it is serious the book is "The Call of the Wild" by Jack London
Bruh
1972???????
You forgot 2009
call of the blade runner....
I don't like CGI so the most recent one isn't my cup of tea.
""CGI for all the animals in the film, leading to unbelievable action sequences."
Unbelievable is right, they're distractingly fake. Where's the 1972 version?
The 2020 version is modern day blunder over everything the book was about. Casting aside the (horrible) CGI, which would have been tolerable if the movie was actually good, the whole thing is just full of shit. From removing the Indians, in order to appease the politically correct snowflakes, to the whole thing totally missing the mark in almost every way possible. Even the 1972 one is miles better than the 2020.
2020 is the worst one ever...
No, the GoodTimes animated adaptation is way worse than that.
Abe The Conservationist ok but in my opinion that live action movie is horrible compared to the goodtimes one.
@@lilythedoggolover4696 Is it because of the animation? The story is better written than the GoodTimes adaptation. Focus more on the story than the CGI.
Abe The Conservationist no the story is bad just like the cgi. Also I like animation better than live action also that's my opinion I don't need to keep on eye on the cgi one it's more bad
Abe The Conservationist just because it's cgi doesn't mean it's good. The 2020 cgi movie was bad. The plot the editing all of it garbage! I do not care if you force me to like it...
