Each to their own but the vocal talent of the likes of a Ronnie James Dio or an Eric Adams piss all over any Death Metal vocalist that's ever existed.

Yes I’d say safely that Napalm pushed the envelope to the extremes, and Carcass turned it into the most incredible artistic expression I’ve ever witnessed. The whole catalog of Caracas’ work, including the newest EP is simply beyond comparison and just when I think they are done and have no more musical wizardry to bestow upon us, I am wrong beyond my own comprehension. I even expected the latest song, “Slaughtered in Soho” to be another very good song. I was wrong. It is simply one of the most beautiful melodies where Bach would be proud of his multi century influence and yet the song is brutal and somewhat comical all at the same time- But that’s Carcass, tongue in cheek, biting the cheek, smiling wryly, triple entendres, deadly serious, and playfully exercising our lexicon past the limits of known verbiage. Between the two albums Necroticism and Heartwork, there are dozens of permutated utterances requiring many hours with a medical dictionary and a musical dictionary for me to decode it all, and the result is even more crazy, beautiful, insightful, and real than any artistic endeavor should be.

Absolute masterpiece, watershed moment in metal. The entire Swedish Melodic Death Metal genre, most of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal/ Metalcore genre owe huge debts to Carcass and the Heartwork album
The entire metalcore aka scenecore/mallcore genre can get on there fucking knees and worship Carcass as well as the entire catalogue of thrash metal, death metal bands, hardcore/crossover bands from the early 80's to 90's.
Mike Amott is Swedish and was in a Swedish melodic death band called carnage when carcass snapped him up and really he brought a lot of that sound with him so probably carcass have more to thank Sweden for! Now he's in arch enemy of course, he left as soon as this was recorded and not even out I don't think!
Christian Brennan Carnage were just Swedish Death Metal. No melodic imfluences. Also, 90% of the riffs are Bill's. Swedish Death Metal influenced the Gothenberg scene in terms of guitar tone. BOSS HM2 pedal.
I remember when I was 17 and played this song for some friends who thought Metallica was the heaviest metal they'd ever heard. Had to help them pick their jaws up off'n the floor.
@@angelinabla7891 "Heavy" is a somewhat subjective term. I personally consider doom metal and its many derivatives to be the pinnacle of "true" heaviness (slow, crushing riffs, beefy bass, pounding drum sound), whereas death metal is faster, more brutal and aggressive. Death metal is obviously still heavy, but in a different way, and not to the extent of heaviness that riff driven metal bands can provide. Under either definition, I still wouldn't put Metallica anywhere near the tip of a heaviness scale, but they're still heavy, they have slow, driven riffs at times, and to someone who had only heard them (as the original comment said about their friends), then they're obviously gonna be the heaviest thing going until being shown otherwise.
As someone who listens to quite a bit of guitar music, I never understood the "heavy-ness" contest. Besides the fact that it's a completely subjective thing anyway, different bands will just sound different and one genre is not better than another just because it's "heavier". I always interpreted heavy as bassy, lumbering rhythms. By that measure though, there's some Noise rock that is probably much "heavier" than even Carcass here. You typically wouldn't apply that sort of term to a noise rock band however, so I don't really see the point. I realize that throwing the term around is more or less specific to metal, but still, it seems a bit pointless.
I was never a diehard fan of extreme metal but when I first heard ‘Heartwork’ back in 1993 thanks to some school friends, it was a revelation. Carcass had/have so much melody mixed in with their brutal tones, it’s actually really easy listening as far as extreme music goes. Such killer grooves and Jeff Walker’s vocals just had something ultra appealing about it. They were trailblazers of multiple sub genres of metal and each album was a new blueprint. Few of their contemporaries at the time matched their level of melody with heaviness. And almost 30 years later they’re still providing quality!

You gotta love Ken Owen. In a metal world full of mullets, dreadlocks and really long hair, he looks like a preppy private school kid, or a eccy popping raver.....always loved his drumming. This is a guy who pretty much straight out of school said to himself "I wanna play as fast as I can in a grindcore band"....mad respect to him for that. It's an ideal for us all to follow.....
Yeah, Ken stood out from Bill, Mike, and Jeff. He's an amazing drummer on those albums. Only realized many years later that Ken is originally from the village where I grew up - Billinge.

Ehmm, those aren't actually solos. Those are simply melodic lines integrated into the song. Solos are made for instruments to stand out on their own. This is clasic music theory in its absolute basics.
These guys did, at the gates, in flames, and dissection were the most influential in the 90s. You can still hear their inspiration whether directly or indirectly in a lot of new death metal and metalcore.
Agreed. Corporal jigsore was an "ah-ha" moment for me as a metal fan and a drummer. That song had severe groove and hook. The opening drum beat, the riff matching up.... so good. One of my all time favs.

Heartwork was so revolutionary at the time, merging the brutality of grind and death metal with the fist-pumping feel of classic metal like Maiden or Dio that got me into metal in the first place. Death and Atheist were going for something similar, but were more proggy/techy and didn't have that "just go out and kick ass" kind of attitude that Carcass displayed.
This is the demonstration of the genius of Carcass. They released an Album and a song (Heartwork released 18 oct 1993) that, 30 years later, is still current and shines with its own light. Respect ++++ boys
and the best thing is that every album sounds different, you've got styles from goregrind to melodic death metal and even some bluesy elements here and there
A great classic and one of the best if not the best sound production back in early 90s I remember it well, I was speechless to the quality and clean sound just perfect I mean look even today the sound of the album is still good crazy

3:42 This solo is simply magical. If it was a little bit longer, this song would be absolute perfection.
i realy like how they "return" to main theme after that solo, part until 04:01
Lol, five seconds solo...😂
I'm literally crying at how amazing and beautiful this is. I love the guitars and vocals so much. The ending guitar solo gets me every time. I really wish it was longer.
That's what she said.
+Eata Bagoshite I HAVE TO DISAGREE!!
Oliver Guenther I want to Slice and Dice you into neat cubes. Then throw those cubes into a stir fry and serve it at a restaurant.
These lyrics are so fucking beautiful.
Vezonmodder I know right? Even years later
I remember when I was 17 and played this song for some friends who thought Metallica was the heaviest metal they'd ever heard. Had to help them pick their jaws up off'n the floor.
Metallica?! XD I love metallica but it's not really heavy in my opinion
@@angelinabla7891 they have some pretty heavy tunes, especially en AJFA
How many off them listen to carcass now ? I bet every one of them
@@angelinabla7891 "Heavy" is a somewhat subjective term.
And almost 30 years later they’re still providing quality!
the guitar harmonies of Carcass are just so great, never gets old
Works of art, painted black
Magniloquent, bleeding dark
Monotonous palate, murky spectrum, grimly unlimited
Food for thought, so prolific
In contrasting shades, forcely fed
Abstraction, so choking, so provocative
A canvas to paint, to degenerate
Dark reflections - degeneration
A canvas to paint, to denigrate
Dark reflections, of dark foul light
Profound, aesthetic beauty
Or shaded, sensary corruption
Perceptions, shattered, splintered, mirroring
In deft taints, diluted, tinted
Spelt out, in impaired colour
Denigrating, going to paints to pain - not a pretty picture
Works of heart bleeding dark
Black, magniloquent art
Monotonous palate, murky spectrum, grimly unlimited
Prolific food for thought
Contrasting, fed with force
Abstraction, so choking, so provocative
Bleeding works of art
Seething work so dark
Seering words from the heart
Daksh Sharma thx for the lyrics
You gotta love Ken Owen. In a metal world full of mullets, dreadlocks and really long hair, he looks like a preppy private school kid, or a eccy popping raver.....always loved his drumming. This is a guy who pretty much straight out of school said to himself "I wanna play as fast as I can in a grindcore band"....mad respect to him for that. It's an ideal for us all to follow.....
I think he was into the Rave scene
@@eon14873 Yeah he made some techno music.
Ken rules!
fuck stereotypes
Yeah, Ken stood out from Bill, Mike, and Jeff. He's an amazing drummer on those albums.
Only realized many years later that Ken is originally from the village where I grew up - Billinge.
every single solo through out the song is amazing
the one in the beginning is very awesome 🎸🎸🎸
#heartwork
#carcass
Back in the day
I copied all the solos from the album consecutively on a second tape
So I could listen all the solos in a row
I liked them so much
Ehmm, those aren't actually solos. Those are simply melodic lines integrated into the song. Solos are made for instruments to stand out on their own. This is clasic music theory in its absolute basics.
Timeless, could have been released today no problem.
Great vocals and riffs... Carcass just doing what Carcass does best... Shred!
Do people realize how much influence this band had on the underground scene
They changed music in the scene
These guys did, at the gates, in flames, and dissection were the most influential in the 90s. You can still hear their inspiration whether directly or indirectly in a lot of new death metal and metalcore.
Please elaborate, no
From grincore to melodic death metal. It's glorious.
Best Head&Shoulders commercial I have seen so far
I remember seeing them in Melbourne in the early 90’s and they walked to the gig carrying their own guitars , and past us as we stood in line.
Classic Carcass track. Amazing.
One of my favourite carcass songs. This and Corporal jigsore! Dang
Agreed. Corporal jigsore was an "ah-ha" moment for me as a metal fan and a drummer. That song had severe groove and hook. The opening drum beat, the riff matching up.... so good. One of my all time favs.
3:58 I feel my heart is ripped out with that heavenly part
One of the most epic and influential bands ever!
51 years old and it's still sweet music to my ears🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I watched every episode of Headbanger's Ball when this song came out hoping they played it. I was so happy every time they did!!
Great song and album!! Plus, watching the video makes me feel better. There's something about their hair that cures my heart. Just look at @3:47 please. Wow, just wow.
Enjoying this masterpiece since 1993 when it came out then. I bought it on cassette tape! I never knew what a classic it would become! Timeless work of art.
Yes I agree!! This is definitely one of the best metal songs ever!! Awesome!!!🤘
One of the greatest song ever.
Agreed ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Great guitar and great drums...The adrenaline rush that I get is unreal when I see them jamming together..These guys are very Fucking talented... been listening to them since I was 14....I'm 40 now.. True talent and great music stand the test of time!!!!
It's 8:30am here in Beautiful Southern Sunny Pittsburgh PA 😉 and I am gonna start a nice calm day with some smooth and groove from one of my favorites... How's bout a lil CarCass to start this Blessed day!!!🎶🌄😉🕸️☯️🙈🙉🙊♉🎭🇮🇹🇨🇭🇮🇪®️®️
Pedals to the metals all day because I don't know how to live any other Fucking Way!!! It's gonna be a good day 😉
saw carcass with deafheaven a couple weeks ago, was one of the best sounding shows i've been too
So heavy and innovative, not only for its time, but forever.
Absolute Masterpiece...cheers from Argentina.
世界一、無二でカッコいい!
Who would have expected such a melodic masterpiece from the same guys who brought us the vilest, most underproduced goregrind???
25 years later, this album still rocks!
CARCASS ROX!!! From Argentina with love 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Absolute timeless classic!! I've had this album since it was released and still listen to it regularly \m/ playing this on the show this week
"22 years old and still sounding as good as ever." -Carcass
Still does here in September 2022
Jeff’s snarling vocals match perfectly with Bill’s snarling guitar tone. This whole album is perfect from top to bottom.
Death is king.
@@krisamagus1 Spiritual Healing and Symbolic are Chuck's best.
@@ericv7720 I can't choose. :) To me all feels masterpieces.
Totally agree 👍
Well said!
This is the demonstration of the genius of Carcass. They released an Album and a song (Heartwork released 18 oct 1993) that, 30 years later, is still current and shines with its own light. Respect ++++ boys
Still one of my favorite metal bands after all those years! Love you guys!
Que gran canción y que pedazo de disco Heartwork.
Gracias Carcass!
The best Pantene commercial of all. 😁
Because they're worth it 🤘🤘🤘🤘
The 4 boys from Liverpool who made music history.
These guys have never put out a bad record.
and the best thing is that every album sounds different, you've got styles from goregrind to melodic death metal and even some bluesy elements here and there
Yeah they have, this one
The whole album is a god- given masterpiece!
Jeff you are THE MANNN!!!
A great classic and one of the best if not the best sound production back in early 90s
I remember it well, I was speechless to the quality and clean sound just perfect I mean look even today the sound of the album is still good crazy
I’m in love with the part from 2:12 to 2:40, such a melodic riff!
I'm still watching and have been listening since the 90's.
I love Phil's dance in the intro looks like he has forgotten he no longer has long hair to flail about😂
The first time I heard this live, I was SIXTEEN. Def blew my mind.
That rhythm is insanely good.
Few reach this level
Very few
Those harmonies in the intro - music to my ears. 🤘🏻
So this band doesn't give you pain in the ear despite the label is called earache records?
Nope! 😂
2024 here, can't stop listening, back to 90s, genius playing
The best piecie of metal music ever. No question.
Still to this day of the best metal songs ever absolute classic
Still one of the nastiest riff's I've ever heard. Top 5 for me any day.
Boing!
Totally underrated album man, been a favourite of mine for so many years. The songs on this album though, Death Certificate has a pure face melting riff! Embodiment is that classic bang your head till it hurts tune. Every song's an absolute killer \m/
I remember in mid 0f 90s I had VHS with 4 hours video clips from MTV channel (thx to satellite tv) "headbangers balls" and this song was there. One of my favorite from that, and in the end of tape "No love lost".

Memories!! I remember being a black metal head at the time, where it wasn’t cool to listen too any death metal bands anymore. I had to listen to this & Seance albums quietly or I wasn’t true lol!!
True Heart work!
So heavy and melodic. System overload!
I have so much respect for this song because of the amount of relief that I managed to perceive from my daily workflow, with this craftsmanship I was been able to keep inspired at the different labs that I worked for, stuyding and exercising. Got to see them live in 2016
I like the way vocals are done...particularly the phrasing and that hook with "the color out of space" repeated strategically in the right places.
Who the hell unlike this masterpiece
