- The rhino calf Savannah plays with zoo keeper Thomas at GIVSKUD ZOO. The play isn't just for fun. By interacting with the animal the zoo keeper creates trust witch helps in daily management. Furthermore the calf's mother learns that the calf is in good hands.

For me it's much cooler how chill momma is about all this. There's at least some degree of trust in the zookeepers not to harm the baby.
I mean, it helps that a) mum can't get through into that space even if she wanted to, and b) baby can retreat out of that space into mum's space whenever it wants.
it seems that rhinos in captivity are basically puppies, but in the wild because they're nearly blind and everything's trying to eat them they are in a perpetual state of choosing violence

This calf is so adorable! What a personality!
So many mammal babies have such the bouncy playful nature we always get to experience with dogs. Though some of the megafauna like a rhino grow up to be adults all the while learning and can get almost as _wise_ as humans. Sometimes more.
The innocence and happiness here is just adorable. Just like a human child checking back with mom to make sure it's okay, then right back to the jumping and playing. Love it.

Imagine when this rhino is all grown up and runs over to say hello. My mother spent some time on a farm when she was a little girl during The Great Depression. She had the idea that if she picked up a calf when it was still relatively small, picked it up _every_ day then she'd be able to pick it up when it'd fully grown up. That experiment lasted less than two months. Several years later, while visiting the farm just after WWII began, my mother returned to the farm and her 'calf" trotted from out in mid-pasture to greet her enthusiastically. The cow kept putting her head under my mother's arm like she wanted her to get up on her back. The farm's owner, my great uncle, put my mother up on Elsie's back and walked them around the pasture for some minutes. My mother loved telling this story throughout her life. I heard it many times and I get a kick out of thinking about it now and a tear or two in my eye.

I appreciate the story even more now because my mother passed away some years ago and when I recall it I vividly picture my mother in her youth; both as a girl and as the young, loving and caring mother she was. In my imagination the scene is very idyllic, sunlit (low humidity because my mother hated humidity!), tranquil and like a Norman Rockwell painting.
You know, I think the baby is actually having fun. He could go to his mom anytime but chooses not to. Enjoy it while it lasts. They get BIG fast.
Adult rhinos in captivity are quite gentle with their human carers. They seek them out for scratches…and treats.
@@mindrolling24 Some years ago I did a "Behind the Scenes" tour at Canberra Zoo where they gave me a stiff-bristled broom to rub the Rhino's back. He just stood there for ages taking as much as I could give. Later I watched as the keeper "played soccer" with him using one of those huge exercise balance balls. It would be great to keep one as a pet...I wouldn't get too many burglars trying to break into my place with one of those wandering in the front yard!

It was probably too cold for him to be outside. If the video was shot shortly before posted, it was already autumn, and rhinos are tropical animal.
Zoo’s typical keep their babies isolated from the public for a time. Mom is teaching it how to be a rhino in captivity and this is also time for her to bond with it. The zoo keeper is teaching baby that it’s ok for baby to trust him, the vet, and anyone else that is involved with helping mom care for her newborn.
I wish they could actually set them FREE in their habitat!

For the people saying that they think the cages are too small, a quick Google search for the name of the zoo clearly shows photographs of the rhinos outside in a much larger habitat. This is clearly just a night pen for them.
A few seconds of research goes a long way.
