  • When stitching on the serger people often have a problem as they sew over seams particularly with knits. The easiest way to solve this problem is to alternate the seam allowances. However that is not always possible. This video offers advice on how to get the best results and the reasons why there can be a problem. It also covers the same problem with coverstitch hems.

This is amazingly helpful. Thank you so much. I’m going to try that for trying to get to the end of a knit rolled hem.

What a well thought out video. I am contemplating getting a serger for fabric construction especially for knit leggings for children. The most intimidating part of any sewing is threading the machines. I will get there with practice. Thank you for this great video. You are a good teacher.☺️

Very helpful! I'm hemming up some knit pants using a double needle and running into exactly this problem. Using your tip, my hem looks better than the one from the factory! After alternating the seam, it was perfect with no further intervention. Thanks so much!

Excellent video. I was interested to see how the humper jumper worked, and the alternatives. Thank you for showing me how to overcome the problem of serging over intersecting seams

What about if you are starting with a thick seam. I make bummies with elastic and I start with two pieces of elastic and it always slides and they dont align. I tried the fabric thing but because its the first thing i sew it always shifts. Any advice? Thanks!

This isn’t exactly about your video here but when serging a long seam with knits inevitably one piece of fabric is longer than the other. Is that why even in this video you had your diff feed at 1.3?

You have to be proactive when sewing knit seams and making them match. Cut off seam allowance for the very first 1.5 inches. This will allow you to put the fabric right up to the needles and have the raw edge kissing the knife. The advantage of doing this is that the first stitch will `nail` the fabrics together and you will have all the feed dogs in touch with your fabric and working for you. When you get about 8 inches from the end of the seam. Hold the end of the seams together and make them match as you stitch.
Differential feed will help you but the above will make the difference.
