Gathers on Janome serger using regular serger foot: Left & right needles: 7 Upper & lower loopers: 3 Differential feed: 2.5 Stitch length: 4 No need to pull threads. If you want more gathers, just turn needle disk tensions up from 7 to 8. For less gathers, turn needle tension disks below 7 (try 5 or 6). Makes tons of ruffles in seconds, ladies and gents. Happy 🧵serging!!😊❤️
Wow that's fantastic news, thanks for sharing Maureen that's amazing. Yes there is so much you can do and I will demonstrate more possibilities in the future too.
??? Especially for woven fabrics, overlocking is essential if u don’t lining a garment. Which u don’t do for trousers or blouses... how otherwise u manage to not have frilly edges???
I love her. This is the first video I've seen by her. I will definitely be a regular viewer. She makes everything she taught very understandable. Bravo!😃
My Bernina overlock machine turned this year 31 years old, :) i have sewn countless garments on it and "she" is still going strong💪. Unfortunately the machine does not have so many functions like the new ones. Btw i am now the proud owner of the coverlock brother 3550 with the top looper my Christmas gift to my self and 3 years ago i purchased the yuki dx7 as my birthday present🎁 so i am all set to make all kind of garments. Last week i purchased a lot of jersey fabric in a outlet... the sales man is just grinning when he sees 👀 me, because i always buy soooo much!
If you have a Janome serger, quick way to make ruffles without a special foot, and no pulling on threads! Settings: Use 4 threads and turn tension disk dials as follows: Left & Right Needles: 9 Upper & Lower Loopers: 3 Stitch Length: 4 Differential Feed: 2.5 Oodles of gathered ruffles in SECONDS!! To reduce the gathers, just lower the tension on your needles. Try 6 or 7. Try on scraps of fabric you will use in your actual sewing project. Practice in spare time on wovens as well as knits. So much fun with beautiful results!Serging party, Ladies!🥳🧵😊
I just found a babylock imagine on Facebook Market for an excellent price and I could cry watching this I can't wait to sew 😭 these tips are lifesavers lol
I remember feeling like that too, but stick with it and you will love it I promise. it is scary at first but you soon get used to it and practice is the best way to build your confidence.
I have struggled with my overlocker machine to complete steps as above. The tips have been great! My machine is an entry level machine and I have never been satisfied with the rolled hem finish I get from it.
This was a very helpful tutorial for this 59 year old joiner that's still learning this wonderful craft. I don't have an overlocker yet. Greetings from Scotland.
Lucy loved this, must say I cant recommend my BabyLock enough. It is probably the best thing I have ever bought for sewing my own clothes. Even changing the needles to Coverstitch is not as bad as I once thought.
I wish I knew this a long time ago!!! So Easy to follow her tips for the overlock machine! Very Clear instructions, very clear pictures of what to do, EXCELLANT!!!
Great tips. I've often used the folded hem technique. Just recently realized that I can use the same technique to create a channel for elastic waistband in the cozy lounge pants I'm making my kids!
Thank you for boosting my confidence to use my overlocker for more than seams Lucy, You have saved me reverting to my 51 year old Elna Supermatic and doing the t-shirts I learned to make 45+ years ago! Many thanks from Australia.
I have just ordered an overlocker, and am anxious for it to arrive. I am so please I have found your video, it is so helpful, and I will be watching more! Hello from Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks so much for this wonderful video - I was told it could do more than what I have been doing !!! Now to put it through the paces !! Thank you again.
I enjoyed all your tips which were a great reminder as I haven't done any sewing for a while. It's given me a boost to get back to the machine again. Thank you.
Super useful summary. I've seen a lot of these tips but felt I didn't have confidence I'd remember them properly. Your little, jump right in style demos are so much appreciated!
Oh that's so great to hear, sometimes I get so nervous about whether I've gone the right way about things and whether people will like or understand them so it is so nice to hear comments like this thank you.
Great, I don't understand everything you say - I am Dutch and living in France for over 30 years, and I "just" bought an overlocker, so I am not familiar with the vocabulary. Showing "how to do" explains everything verry well :) Thanks ! One thumb up and one more "abonnée" :)
I'm grateful for these tips. I've only worked on finishing seams and never changed the tension. It's time to play more with my old overlocker. Thank you.
My house is under construction and I haven't been able to use my BL Imagine until recently. I needed help getting aquainted again, and this was an utterly amazing video -- you're a wonderful instructor. Thanks so much.
Nothing better than a Baby Lock Serger as well as their sewing machines for sure. Thank you for your lovely video it was very helpful. God's blessings.
How wonderful I found you.... I'm in the USA.... this was a GREAT lesson on sergers... Thank you very much for your talents and time making this... Jon
The first tip blew my mind. THAT’S HOW YOU DO THAT. Thank you so much, you have literally changed my life. Also the second tip was really great. I have heard of it before, but I never saw it illustrated so well.
My partner bought me a basic Singer overlocker for Christmas this year as I sew a lot but I am never happy with the "finish", they always look hand made and unprofessional. I honestly didn't know they can do so many things and now I am really excited to try it out on all my fabric scraps!! Any tips for someone who has never touched one before?
Thanks for these tips. I thought of using a flatlock for hems. Would that work? I haven't used my overlocker, Janome 6234XL, for a while as family issues and the lack of space has prevented me. I'm eager to get started again. I've never found threading my overlockers difficult. I was scared of mine for some time before I took the plunge! I saw someone cutting out that rectangle before sewing two pieces together but she didn't explain why. You have now helped me understand this. It is so simple but so effective.
This is just chock-full of terrific info and I'm so grateful. Knit neckband have been the bane of my sewing life for so long and now I can't wit for next chance to use your techniques. It's all great!
This is very helpful. Have got a lockmachine for 2 days now, learned stitching only 2 months ago, it is a matter of understanding techniques really. The whole process is so very easy once you understand the machine and how it works.
Thank you, Lucy, I've had my overlocker for so long and only used it for finishing seams. Your explanations are so easy to follow and now I know what else can be done with I'll certainly be using them
Thank you so much Lucy, I really really enjoyed watching you create those different types of seams and boarders on fabrics. Yes I’ve watched this before. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
love anything that teaches me more about the overlocker. Only thing is: I do that strap trick with a sewing machine thread as the strap doesn't need overlocking to its inside and it's less use on thread.
So many different ways of using a overlocker, thank you for sharing. Is it possible for tips onto overlocking a hem on jersey fabric as at the moment mine are coming out stretched and wavy and for the life of me I cannot think how to correct it. Help is needed. Thank you.
Differential feed is what you need. It causes the two sets of feed dogs to move at different speeds. Try it on a piece of scrap fabric the same as you are overlocking. If I remember rightly (I haven't used my overlocker for a while so check this) a higher setting is needed so the feed dogs will feed the fabric through faster and so avoid stretching. When set at 1, or whatever the normal setting for your machine is, the feed dogs may stretch or even gather fabric. If that isn't what you want then the differential feed needs adjusting.
Some great tips thank you. I need to know more, after all these years I am not getting the best out of my overlocker. Am sewing a nightie soon and will use the lettuce edge for the hem.
Thank you for this timely video. I was convinced that there was something wrong with my new Babylock Victory when it wouldn’t sew the pocket in the seams of a Southbank Sweater dress. I thought I had wasted a lot of money on a machine that did not work. I realise now that the fabric was too thick. I have followed your tips today and inserted a really tidy neckband. Would welcome anymore tips that you can give.
That's brilliant news Susan I'm so pleased to hear that. Yes it is amazing what a difference some of these tips can make to some of those tricky techniques.
Oh my gosh, Lucy! I know I’m late to the party, but thanks so much for these tips! I’ve definitely been under utilizing my Babylock serger. That stops today. 💗
Thanks Lucy. Since purchasing my first overlocker, I have been in a constant battle with it! Today, I managed to do the band hemming technique and it worked perfectly. I was so thrilled to have achieved a positive outcome. I was ready to throw in the towel but this video has convinced me to perservere.
Oh I'm so pleased to hear that Jo, take your time and don't be too hard on yourself, if you persevere it will be worth it in the end and I'm sure you'll learn to love it.
Thank you! I didn't know it was possible to disable the cutting blade. I just bought an old Pfaf Hobbylock overlocker. First one I've ever owned and I haven't used it quite yet. I need to set up a sewing space for it.
One word - Master! I hope you have some videos about basic settings though as I never change mine, not sure about them at all. Basic use only up to now. Hopefully that will change now.

I couldn't see the need for an overlocker as I usually use woven fabrics.I've now changed my mind.Brilliant vlog.
Lol. I feel the same.
I have one and never used it. Now I'm dusting it while I watch the video. Lol.
Wow that's fantastic news, thanks for sharing Maureen that's amazing. Yes there is so much you can do and I will demonstrate more possibilities in the future too.
Haha that's brilliant news Annabelle I hope you fall back in love with it now

Worked a treat on my Janome. I am using it to make a dress with layers of gathered tiers. Thank you!
I just found a babylock imagine on Facebook Market for an excellent price and I could cry watching this I can't wait to sew 😭 these tips are lifesavers lol
Great tips- I am new to overlocking and while I love using it- sewing so fast is fun- it intimidates me.
A good approach is to make lots of samples and label them for future reference. Before working on a garment, test on scraps!
I remember feeling like that too, but stick with it and you will love it I promise. it is scary at first but you soon get used to it and practice is the best way to build your confidence.
Yes always test on scraps!
This woman is such a great presenter.

I liked the tip on sewing hems & loosing the bulk when you go over them ..so simple great tip. Thank You
I have struggled with my overlocker machine to complete steps as above. The tips have been great! My machine is an entry level machine and I have never been satisfied with the rolled hem finish I get from it.

Wow, love these tips, especially the one to sew and turn the strap the right way, thank you
That strap turning method blew my mind! Thank you for this video!
