WHO IS BUNCHARTED?
We're Michelle and Alex, an American expat couple living abroad in the Netherlands. 🇳🇱
In 2020, we quit our jobs to travel the world, and... well, that didn't happen. So in 2022, we decided to make an even BIGGER change: to pack up our lives (and our cats 🐈) and move from Austin, Texas, in the United States, to the Netherlands. Subscribe for new videos like this every week!
Paardenworst can be a snack or used as sandwich filling. Always remove the skin. I never heard of anyone cooking the paardenworst before consumption. A rookworst needs to be cooked, however you can eat the skin.
A lot of Dutch people use sirop (Pannenkoekensiroop) on their bacon and cheese pancakes, sometimes combined with mushrooms and onions. Savory pancakes and savory sweet combo pancakes are quite popular here in the Netherlands.
As for trips you can consider De Efteling (the Dutch Disneyland but then with other fairy tales), Burgers' Zoo (with huge topical and dessert halls), Tikibad (biggest Swimmingpool amusement park in NL) or one of the lesser known parcs like Archeon and Avifauna in my city of Alphen aan den Rijn :)
Hahaha I used to live in Alphen! AVifauna might be a little too tame for the Buncharted guys but Archeon is definately interesting! They feature gladiator fights and the loser is banged the head in with a stone or big hammer! 😛 It's based on the different era's of actual history of Alphen.
("Appelstroop" on a pancake with bacon and cheese, or even better bake pieces of apple with your pancake.)
HEL NEE! ❤❤❤👍🥰
On an unrelalted note: Have you guys heard the Dutch entry to Eurovision yet? It is the most quintessential Dutch entry we've had in years. You could use it to learn how to do "hakken" like a local. ;-) Edit: spellling.
haha yes the chorus is constantly stuck in my head

I really hate hardcore, I'm an older punkrock kind of a guy, happy hardcore has the same vibe.

The bag where the “paardenworst” comes in, is a bag used for everything. You’re supposed to take the skin off and eat it cold or at room temperature as a snack on in your bread as a topping 😅
OMG thank you for the moving guide! My ETA is July of this year 😊
Paardenworst is not eaten like a rookworst with a main course but cold on bread/sandwich or as a snack. By heating the paardenworst, a lot of the texture and taste are lost. Next time get a paardenworst and serve it at room temperature at a sandwich or in slices next to a drink.
The typical Dutch Rookworst is made of pig or bovine and needs to be cooked before it can be eaten (the ones you get at a butchery). The rookworst of HEMA and supermarket are already cooked in the factory so only needs to be heated before dished out.
zaanse mayo on the thootbrush lol
Zaanse Mayo best toothpaste ever.
Stroop on savory pancakes is yum!
Some of my favourite "vleeswaren' to put on fresh white bread is paardenrookvlees (slices of cold smoked and salted horse meat) and Tongenworst ( slices of black pudding mixed with cow tongue)
Pancakes dont have limitation. The sirup and mashed sucre are on all tablets and can be used on all pancakes. Warning with mashing stuff on the induction plate. That can only handle a limited force, so be careful! Better stamp on the kitchen top or table with heat thingy under it.
For a travel tip: Texel
Ecomare is a very cool spot to visit there (seal rescue/zoo, nature museum mostly about the North Sea and its inhabitants)
And it is the right time of the year to visit Texel, the first new born lambs Texel is famous for are almost ready to go to the fields
Teksol!!! 😆🤣
Hey!
The carrots, onions and potatoes mash (hutspot), we usually eat with hachee (a kind of beef stew, with the sauce), not with rookworst. Of course, you can eat it with rookworst (that's made from whatever kind of meat you want: generally, it's pig).
But hey, enjoy your hutspot anyway you like it!
we eat it with all kinds of things. we made it a bit more “authentically” in a video a few months ago though!
No we do not. Hachee is eaten with mashed potatoes. Don't be silly.
@@ilaphroaigHutspot eet je met hachee of rookworst
@@MarianMaverick Nope. Nobody I know eats it with hachee. You are weird. "Rookworst" or with meatballs.
Would love to see you navigate the dutch housing market when you are searching for a house to buy. would be interesting to see you do some videos about that.
"What's that sound like" - the name stamppot all of the sudden gets a totally different meaning now.
Bethesda Maryland representing! I lived in Maryland for 20 years and I'm currently in Brazil before moving to the Netherlands in few months time. Found you guys recently and I have subscribed. Perhaps I'll see you guys around once I get there! xoxo
home of the bethesda mall 😄
@@buncharted I lived in that mall! Mainly around the eatery LOL
In my Dutch opinion, a pannenkoek met spek en kaas NEEDS syrup! It complements it so well, I would never eat it without syrup.
Definitely not controversial ❤
Sirup on savory pancakes is the best and not controversial at all.
My go to Pannenkoek is cheese, bacon, apple and raisins with syrupm 😋
Using syrup in a Dutch pancake restaurant is less controversial than not using syrup. Oh and my mother used the leftover mesh to bake it and put it on a leaf of bread with a bit of salt and pepper.
I think it's called 'a slice of bread' but i like 'a leaf of bread' much better. Has a poetic feel to it.
Spek, kaas, stroop én appel combined is 🔥🔥🔥
Love you guys!
Just bought the moving guide and it looks really, really useful! Thanks so much for making that!
You're ready for the next level of Dutch food: Twentse Bakbloedworst, Balkenbrij and the absolute 'high' of Dutch cuisine: Zoervleis from Limburg. AH (Allerhande) has a nice 'entry-level' recipe for Zoervleis. You'll like it. About Balkenbrij: I guess that your local butcher has it. Twentse Bakbloedworst can be found in many butcher shops, but you should go to -what else- Twente in the Eastern part of the country. (Take your bike when you go; lots of nice cycling paths and small scenic villages there!)
Congrats on getting A2 and good luck with the next tiers guys!
If you ever need to hang up something without damaging your wall, the "klevende spijkers" from Tesa might be worth checking out. Apart from that, great video as always. 😉
Oh, I really like the mayo from DL (the one with the citroen flavor). Yummi! Also congratz on finishing your online guide!
if you guys ever have the change to eat hutspot with Haché or zuurvlees or just a meatball i think guys will enjoy it
I always put poedersuiker on my cheese and bacon pancakes, it's delicious ☺
Its a really thick sweet and sour apple syrup or molasses ) ( When you first see it , it might look like some engine oil that has sat in an engine for 20 years , its that thick but its yummi ) Its also great on a cheese sandwich .
The pancakes with cheese and bacon go very well with stroop!
Hutspot is my favorite stamppot. So lekker!
What I love is spek apple pancake, with syrup of course, but also with sugar and cinnamon on the apples. And yes, cheese pancake with syrup too.
For me ,hutspot or zuurkool with rookworst or a tartaartje and uitgebakken bacon .Na het bakken uitlekken ,afkoelen ,en dan kleine stukjes maken rn over de stamppot .lekker jusje erbij (van de tartaar) .
This is so funny the mall you went to in dordrecht is a few steps away from my appartment :D
Drilling a few holes in the wall should be fine in any kind of housing, just make sure you can easily fill them up with some filler if you would leave (hence use screws, not nails as removing them takes half the wall with it)
Good instinct on the syrup. Bacon pancake with syrup... bacon cheese with syrup. It just brings it home. With mushroom pancakes (champion) I like to sprinkle on some Maggi.
You totally need a poster of the Deventer skyline.😌Also, Dali! Can't go wrong with Dali.
Deco idea:
Look for high resolution pictures of historic Dordrecht.
Ask a local theatre if they are willing to let go of some posters from previous shows (or if they can put some away for you).
and probably a bit kitsch or campy, but the old "Aap Noot Mies" posters from Dutch preschools are pretty neat too. :)
and a protip for cutting sausage with hard casings with any knife; poke it with a fork, then cut where the holes are. ;)
Kaas, spek en stroop is de beste combo. Sweet and savory mix together is the best and classic one. Might as well try pancake, bacon and pineapple for a summer vibe.
Many, many people put the sirup/ stroop on these pancakes, delicious!
Delicious paardenworst. You have to see it as Gelders gekookte worst but then sweeter
I do a little bit of powdered sugar on my bacon cheese pannekoek. Its just THAT GOOD
You should try that beer on the sign @3:25 la chouffe gnome beer.
you need a poster of a stroopwafel. And the dinner you made is something I do also 😄 but I like to use Turkisch bread
now we’re talking
we normally cook the 'worst' on top of the stew before we 'prak' it 🙂
We got our pictures and decorations at the Kringloop.
I don't eat Hutspot as often as I would like. I'm the only one in the family who likes it, and you can't get small amounts of fresh cut hutspot, not even at a greengrocers'. Every once in a while, I buy one large onion and a large winterpeen, and cut them myself. I don't like rookworst with hutspot, and I don't think I would like paardeworst with it either.
As some other people commented, paardenworst is usually eaten cold as a snack with a drink, or slices on bread. The Jumbo and Plus supermarkets in Dordrecht also sell paardenworst, from another butcher, and they also have a wider version (sometimes known as 'brede paardenworst, i.e. 'wide' paardenworst), especially to put on a sandwich.
About warm paardenworst. When I was a little boy, my grandfather often took me shopping, and he would go to the horse butcher (Kamps in de Vriesestraat, voor wie dat nog wat zegt) every other day, and children always got 'een stukje worst'. I always wanted paardeworst, and sometimes it came fresh out of the cooker, and it was still warm, and I liked that very much.
Pannenkoek with spek is just the best with stroop! The cat poster looks adorable! Spruitjes on a baguette pizza,,, mmhhh might need to try that! Spruitjes aren't my fave thing to eat, but it sounds intriguing! Let me join you on the Dutch lessons haha. If the levels are the same as in school I didn't go higher than B2 .. While my English was C1/C2 and I am Dutch!!
I see a lot af mayonaise.. but actually when ordering some fries on the streets, you will get Fritessaus, which is more sweet than the actual sour mayonaise
A potato ricer is the key kitchen gadget! Super smooth mash, also can’t believe you didn’t have mustard on the plate 🫠
oh man mustard was a miss. we grabbed the amsterdamse uien but forgot the mustard
Vizit the town of Ootmarsum and buy a few Ton Schulten posters there. (If you like his style of art)
love your new haircut
I love seeing you guys slowly assimilated into total Dutchness.
If you get your posters dry mounted they are easier to stick up and it is inexpensive. Thank you for the great videos.
oh thanks - we will look into this!
Microwave (Michelle and the horse meat): I'm a vegetarian, but I think that I would have used the microwave rather than the oven. - The catch is that I'm one who doesn't use microwaves as binary on/off devices, but mostly at intermediate power settings (and correspondingly longer durations). - I have taken the concept from "sous vide" cooking (which hardly makes sense for vegetarians). Let me try to be short this time by referring those interested to the UA-cam channels covering it.
By the way: it's great to see people enjoying brussels sprouts. :-) My favorite approach is cooking them in the microwave, then eat them with much "sambal oelek" and my own take on french fries. WARNING: Be sure to be near a toilet!
het is precies zoals het hoort!
I love your vlog better. keep doing vlogs
My wife and I are planning on relocating to the Netherlands. Will definitely purchase the guide, being a seasoned expatriate, it helps to know the land you are immigrating to. 😅
That's a long walk for pannenkoeken
Funny, most American people don't like licorice.😁 FYI, the most licorice what we eat in the Nederlands is manufactured in Spain !
Oh and check out Zuiderzee museum in Enkhuizen, I'm sure you'll love it!
If you're gonna eat hutspot, please do it the right way. Fry some chopped onion with garlic and sambal, and mash it through the cooked patatoes and carrots (cook these together in bouillon) until everything is unrecognizable. For the true Leiden experience, combine with stew (stoofvlees). Tradition prescribes even mashing the stew through it all, but i like mine on the side. My go to recipee is the one using riblappen, Guinness beer and ontbijtkoek with mustard. Start at least six hours before dinner though. Good luck making this a few times a month.
I love syrup on my pancakes . Mmm special with spek en kaas. 😊
frame it and use Tesa removable hooks (at hardware store like Gamma or Praxis) looks way nicer when it is framed. You can use cheap frames from the Action ;-)
Fooooooood! 😋😋😋
SO much food
Stroop on savory pancakes are delicious. Nothing controversial about it. My favorite: gebakken appel en spek pannenkoeken met stroop.
Fun video, thanks. And drilling a few small holes in walls is normal, even in rental places. Just make sure to use filler when moving out. But I can imagine that if you are already imagining moving out soon, you want to skip the hassle. 🙂
And good editing with the overhead shots... looked for a while like that cooking segment might become too spicy, but y'all kept it within the rules. 😉
yes exactly - we just don’t want to deal with it if we’re already in the moving mindset. just another thing we will have to worry about later!
Have you ever tried a serrated knife for bread? It is the next best thing to sliced bread 🙂
Does your guide also have a section on good reasons NOT to move to Netherlands? Whether it's struggles people should keep in mind, or bad reasons people might think were good reasons to move there in the first place? I think that would be immensely helpful in deciding if Netherlands is the right place for any given person.
the first one yes (struggles to keep in mind and expectations around specific challenges like the cost of moving and the housing shortage).
we did talk about doing the second one, but it’s such a complicated decision for most people, ya know?
I hate hutspot tbh. However, for any Dutch stamppot (I happen to love Boerenkool).. if you want to mash it, I recommend taking the pot off the fire for a bit to save your induction plate (I assume that you cook electric by the looks of things) mashing it with the pot on the counter (perhaps with a cloth under it if the pan is hot), then you get to mash it a lot more violently (which is fun, IMO) :-D
Be careful with these sticky pads, some of them leave greasy stains on the wall ! We are moving next month to Den Haag, can't wait !
haha we have already started to notice this 😂😭
i put stroop on my spek pannenkoek... i wouldnt put it on a spek/kaas pannenkoek beacuse spek and kaas have got their own flavour combo going... but on spek. yes!
Everybody loves stroop on their spek pannekoek, with or without cheese :D definitely not controversial!
It’s got to be paardenworst. Wait for it…and yes it is. I love it. Just cold as a snack. And i love spekpannenkoeken. My mom still makes them for me. I’m 43 🤭😂
Think I recognized your Dutch lesson books. Code+? My employer makes it 😂
yep that's it! :)
Let nobody tell you "How to eat a pancake" in a pancake restaurant. Those pancakes are way bigger and elaborate than those we eat at home. Yeah... homemade pancakes tend to be rolled up and eaten using your hands. In a restaurant... not so much.
I don't know your taste of course but if birds and flowers and such are your thing, might I suggest posters with drawings by Marjolein Bastin? Another awsome Dutch artist was Anton Pieck (who you might have heard of as designer of de Efteling). For more modern Dutch artists you might look into Sam Drukker, Erwin Olaf, Astrid Outheusden or Alice Brasser.
Congrats on passing A2.
It was so normal for me to eat horsemeat like rookvlees, heerlijk!
Pannenkoeken met stroop is traditional, no worries
Hallo guy's, did you try zuurkool stampot already? If not, buy wijnzuurkool, Cook it in sweet White wine, take 300 grams of small smoked spekkies and aardappels and Cook everyting, then make a stamppot and eat it with mosterd and rookworst. Groetjes.
my favorite is zuurkool stamppot - we will definitely have to try this sometime!!
@@bunchartedno need to stick to the classic stampots either.
I recently made an indonesia inspired stampot with napa cabage and peultjes. Ate it with sticky spicy ketjap tempeh. Added some rempejek for crunch and atjar tjampoer for zing as a topping.
Was nice! If you want it more spicy add some of your fave sambal.
CONGRATS on your passing your A2 levels. But oh, oh, oh, horsemeat for stamppot? Yes, the Dutch do eat it, but not all. 😥
And asking your Dutch friends if anyone paints is like asking if tulips grow in the Netherlands. 😄 My husband is also a retired art teacher and landscape artist. I also have several friends in our province who paint, but your tastes are probably more on the modern side. You might even have some luck at your neighbourhood kringloop winkel. BTW, you might want to DIY your Dordrecht picture with watercolour and then frame it. Just a fun idea. Cheers
oh that's a great idea!! thank you!
Pannenkoek with spek and stroop is my favorite 😊
Cheese pannekoek is best made with crispy cheese , thats the best. Don't fold the pannekoek. 😀.. oeh ,Like your pizza. 👍
.
Paardenworst in hutspot? I mean, you're still learning and stuff but this is as bad as cutting spaghetti in front of italians haha! Definitely get rookworst next time. The best rookworst you can buy at HEMA.
It's expensive, but a lot of cities sell metal or wood cut outs of their skylines.
Have you already visited Groningen? It's a little out of the way, but probably the best city in the Netherlands. Er gaat niks boven Groningen
At this point I think it's almost inevitable to not have some sort of food poster on your wall 🤭
going to put the framed photo of breakfast from the tv show “parks and recreation” on the wall
You’re buying a house here?!? Yeah!! More Dutch video’s :)
guy's no way you can hang stuf up with tape. If you come to my store in Gorinchem, ill frame the 4/5 items for free. Just to give you a nice ambiance.
do you do dry mounting? :)
we don’t want to hang up framed art since we’re moving this fall and don’t want to damage the walls
Hey guys,
One thing: The Dutch eat at their dinner table... Not on the couch... Just saying
😂 except Sunday evenings when the football is on

Have you ever considered taking a dog, probably not . But HEMA fans as you are you can buy a Takkie knuffel, to decorate e.g. your bench
i’ll take a stuffed takkie but not a real dog 😄
