Great test! Please realize that Bakker Bart does not really make the products traditionally. The general opinion is that it has an average baking level. The price-product ratio is good, but for better products you really have to go to the artisan baker who bakes the products themselves.

I agree, BB is the "quick fix" when you travel or are having a "shopping day" and sit down for a quick coffee and croissant. Slightly above supermarket bread and pastry but nothing special. When they first started out they were a lot better but once they grew bigger it went down quickly.

This is true. Living in Holland 🖐🏻 Its not real (good) bakery. A lot comes from the frigde/ fabric. And not fresh baked.

I was never impressed with Bakker Bart. It honestly surprises me how they became so popular. There are much better alternatives, usually privately owned bakeries.

I am in the lucky circumstance to live in the countryside of The Netherlands where you can still find bakeries that are in the family for more than a 100 years, so is the bakery in our village, and I would NEVER go to a chain or supermarket for breads, cake and pastries, the high standard and quality of these old school bakeries is simply unbeatable! Thumbs up!!

The town I come from has 1 bakery, now that I live in Groningen I only get to choose from 2 bakker bart's or about 20 other bakeries plenty of which have also been in the family for generations

    • @really7187
      @really7187 9 місяців тому +5

As if that's exclusive to the countryside? Even in Amsterdam you can find a lot of bakery's who bake their own bread for decades.

    • @SuperDutchjohn
      @SuperDutchjohn 9 місяців тому

Ofcourse there are old school bakeries in the cities as well, but they are much rarer because of the big chains and supermarkets, while here in Groningen for instance it is much more common in the villages simply because there are NO supermarkets! And talking about Amsterdam, been there a lot (my wife is from Amsterdam), had cakes, pastries and bread there ALSO from old school bakeries, trust me, they can ALSO not beat the quality from the bakeries here! BTW, the same thing with meat from the butcher, vegetables, etc...etc...@@really7187

Same in the Netherlands, I was so confused when they called it a chocolate croissants. Same with the kaas(/ham) broodjes that got called croissants by them.

The savoury snacks at the end (worstenbroodjes, saucijzenbroodje) pair really well with curry ketchup. This is likely also the sauce in the frikandelbroodje. My favourite is the original "hela kruidenketchup". It's in a red bottle, with a yellow kabel. It will also make worstenbroodjes less dry.

The strength of Bakker Bart is that it's a lunchroom/broodjeszaak combined with a bakery, as opposed to a tearoom or a pastry baker with a sitting corner, or a hapjeszaak (any kind of snackbar). They're pretty close to fast food. It's a place to rest your feet and your shopping bag and get some food inya. Pastry is never referred to as 'snacks' in Dutch, because snack (Du.: snakken -> to take greedy bites/mouthfuls) infers a certain hastiness. Tearooms and pastry bakers are places to relax and compose yourself (tot jezelf komen) while enjoying a nice cuppa and sweets (zoetigheden). They're a little more posh/gentrified, but don't let that fool you. Just wear clean clothes and they'll take your money.
The more down to earth version would be called theehuis, but the new ones often appear in gentrified parts of the town, and can be hideously expensive, more so than a traditional chique tearoom in old town.
If you've visited Den Haag, you may have noticed small stone buildings with a lot of glass on one side, usually on the off side of the road. These are the old koffiehuisjes, where werkmannen (small contractors) used their lunch. They sold straight koffie and maybe (!) a few hapjes like koek, cake or hardboiled eggs. You were supposed to bring your own sandwiches. The last one I saw operational sold broodjes haring.

Koffiebroodje or koffiekoeken has been a "classic" for many years. Used to be a favorite of my father in the 1970s. We used to call them "plakkoeken" (sticky coockies?). They used to have some soft icing on top, which made the entire thing very sticky. Always has been too sweet for me, but maybe without the icing I could enjoy it.

Technically speaking, there is no sausage in a saucijzenbroodjel, nor in a worstenbroodje Sometimes it is the contents of a sausage. so without the skin.
You can easily make a saucijzenbroodje yourself. You need puff pastry 10 slices per package, 300 grams of half pork and half beef mince, with herbs of your choice (so favorit american herbs also works and your beloved jalopenos also) and 1 beaten egg (you brush the top with a small amount of that egg of the bun for a nice color during baking) with 1 crumbled rusk or breadcrumbs. Place the rolls on baking paper on the baking tray and then bake in the middle of the 200 degree Celsius preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Tons of recipies on the internet voor saucijzenbroodje,.

My goodness, consuming thirty of those calorie-rich bakery products for the sake of one video! I would describe that as service beyond the call of duty. Thank you for risking your nutritional balance and dental health on our behalf; it was most informative and *leuk* to watch!

That was a nice test! In my own experience, the hearty stuff is good at Bakker Bart, but you dont go there for the sweeter, bakery items. Local bakeries are better at that stuff, not so plasticy

I personally like to eat breakfast at Bakker Bart. I then opt for a large breakfast with old cheese and butter on the brown bread roll. No jam but butter on the croussant. Nice cup of coffee and a bottle of squeezed orange. You won't get this quality anywhere for this price.

As a dutch person, i eat a tompouse as following. Remove and eat the top with the pink stuff. Scoop out and eat the cream but leave a little on the bottom piece. Eat the bottom. It gets really messy otherwise.

The thing with Bakker Bart is that it serves people in the high streets, exhausted and hangry in the midst or just after shopping. It's kinda cheap, you get a lot of butter and fat in, so it does the job. But I think nobody would consider it an actual bakery; because of the high rent in the city centers, they hardly have any competition anymore from the oldfashioned bakeries. They're just not around so people splash on Bakker Bart as the quick and easy option. 🤷🏽‍♂️😅
By the way: putting cheese on a mueslibol is a real 'Limburgian'-thing to do. Even better if you put stroop on top! That is, the real one from Schinnen: Canisius. 🙃👍🏻

You two should try a “palingbroodje”. It is a broodje filled with a piece of eel. And remember to eat it from the side not the small end because the eel is with bones still in it. I used to buy those in Zierikzee.

I literally commented on the saucijzenbroodje video that it's on the bottom of the food chain and that frikandellenbroodje is the way to go! So I'm really happy with this conclusion 😁 Haven't had the one from Bakker Bart before, but I do know that there's a lot of difference between the sauce they use at different bakeries/stores. It's always a curry sauce, but some use a very sweet curry (my least favorite) and others use a very spiced curry (my favorite). If you have a Nettorama near you I'd recommend you try their frikandellenbroodje 😉

Sausijzenbroodje is much older and more traditional than the frikandelbroodje, which came up in the last few decades. Also the sausijzenbroodje, like the worstenbroodje contains pork meat and the frikandel is mostly chicken.

Great video! Have you ever tried droge worst (dried raw sausage, dried in a salt bath)? It is really popular here in the North! Friesland, Drenthe (my home hometown of Assen) and Groningen all have different variants!

LOL 25:59 they literally are not the same thing; saucijzen-broodje is niet een worsten-broodje en niet een frikandellen-broodje they are 3 different types of worst/meat by lack of better wordings. Also on the frikandellenbroodje is kruiden/curry ketchup. These are most likely the "peppery" flavors you tasted.

Agree with the appelflap ratio being weird. I always felt there is not enough filling with Appelflappen nor with the appel/banaan beignets. You get more dough with sugar instead of the nice goey sweet inside.
I'm bit of an Rozijnbol aficionado. My guilty pleasure and comes in many varieties. Especially with a little bit of lemon or orange zest on the outside for a subtle additional flavor.
Only thing I miss on your try-out is the Roomboter Broodje :D
With a lot of those treats its really hit or miss depending on where you get it.

That was a fun test of a food variety at a bakery branch, which products are mostly from a factory bakery.
And a test with a pretty high calorie boost for yourselfs 🫣
We do prefer the local artisan bakery. Honest pure products, less preservatives, locally produced and very tasty 😋
The original French 🇫🇷 croissant 🥐 and chocolatine (pain au chocolat) are artisanal products that are prepared in a classic and time consuming way. Resulting in delicious fine taste at a higher price 😊
Incomparable with and completely different as these cheaper products made in a factory.
