    Totally agree with Tony on hierarchical economic policy on national level. We made those mistakes in the past by fully moving out of an industry for another just to miss out on both. We made this mistake in the 60s when we moved out of rubber for oil palm and cocoa before that.
    We made another mistake by abandoning farming for "manufacturing" just to find out that we are uncompetitive in both and hurt our local food production. Provinces and states have to remember that they are part of a larger system under the federation and should play specific role to make the federation work.

    Sarawkian here. I'm glad that there is some recognition of the issues Sarawak/Sabah face. That said, I do feel that our state development occurs in spite of, rather than with the support of, the federal government. It is all too easy to say that we could consider shifting sun-setting industries to East Malaysia, but the requisite infrastructure has not even been established. Only now is the pan-Borneo highway a thing. And therein belies the East Malaysians' dissatisfaction: that we watch you guys discuss high speed rail in West Malaysia, when our roads are yet to be built.
    That said, I feel that this is something that could be discussed further. Perhaps a future topic for this channel?

    Good intelllectual discussion between Dr. Ong and Tony Pua. The use of podcast to reach out to the masses has become the rage with the KJ and SH talk show busting chart ratings regularly and not surprised "Are We OK?" has the potential to do so. The Malaysian intellectual community has been so long sidelined from participating in the country's economic development, and we can see the resolution of the Rakyat's problem has taken a backseat to vested interest activities. There is still "trust deficit" amongst the races and this needs to be addressed via regular "crucial conversations" where each bare their souls so that the other can relate and even help out where possible. A "santai" platform needs to be set up where there is constant engagement between Rakyat especially the Intellects and politicians but thus far the platform is far from reality.

    So glad to hear testimony from both of you. It is indeed a very exciting journey in your life to be involved in nation building.....there were moments when all had lost hope, emotion run up n down with change of leadership like riding roller coaster, surely more for both of you when you all were hands on in that time.
    Fight has just begun, and never give up though in a different platform n format.
    Feel the desire in both of you to contribute constructively for Malaysians.
    One thing the government should work on is the ability to command English among the nation generally so that they can understand in depth podcast like this.

    Politics of non-racial, non-religious and progressive will only leave worthy leaders with little choice in M’sia. KJ will have to decide for himself. Remaining in racial and religious will not get anywhere except more racial, more religious. Even if he rises to the top, he won’t lead the country to greater heights.
    M’sia have been in doldrums for decades because of racial and religious politics. The country needs reforms in order to move forward. It takes great leadership to visualise it!

    Virtually no public infrastructure investments ever make a return on investment in direct monetary sense. It is the indirect value that it creates as a result of it which makes a bigger and more valuable impact for the country/community/economy.

    • @yeongvoonkang1966

      True, but I think their standpoint is not much on making a profit from public infra, but more about not losing too much money than the govt can actually afford. While HSR can bring indirect value (ie facilitate economic activities), it doesn’t make sense if it can’t even cover the money burnt each year just to keep the HSR around

    Tong Pau must realise Singapore didn’t build their Changi Airport and their port on the basis of cost and affordability. Not that we should not consider the cost aspect but since when we consider strategic projects purely from the aspects of cost, population and affordability. It’s more on visions going forward. It takes visionary and leadership to foresee the future. When we mooted building Putrajaya and KLIA some also raised the issues of cost and affordability. Today we said it’s cheap projects we did.

    Which HSR expert said High speed rail must only from Singapore to KL?
    The minimum distance for high-speed rail is 50 km (that is Jurong East to Iskandar City)
    50 km is often considered a minimum, leaving enough for high speed trains to accelerate and reach cruising speed that makes the advantages of high-speed rail relevant.

    • @voiceless3221
      @voiceless3221 5 місяців тому +6

      Do you know that having too many stops will increase the duration of the journey thus defeating the purpose of having high speed in the first place?

    • @smileeveryday1964
      @smileeveryday1964 5 місяців тому +2

      It can be KL to Johor also, wherever place, the more stops you put in (just with that hope to fill all the seats up), the more delay your high speed rail is. Just when you are about to hit the max speed, you slow down again to make a stop then you cruise another 15 mins to high max speed and to decelerate another 15 minutes before stopping. So you HSR serve no purpose because they only have less than 1/4 of max speed time. Might as well upgrade ETS. ETS these days can hit 180+km/h, we upgrade it a bit hitting 200km/h should be good enough.

    Tony's argument on the HSR doesnt make sense. KL-Singapore is the busiest international air route in the world. If the busiest air route in the world cannot justify HSR, using this logic no route in the world can justify HSR which is ridiculous.
    The improved connectivity between the two cities can lead to induced demand beyond current levels, leading to an increase in trade between KL and Singapore. This needs to be considered, and not just the revenue received from selling tickets.
    Tony seems to be very conservative when it comes to government spending and refuses to consider indirect benefits and economic growth effects caused by these large transit projects

      To argue on the basis of logic requires one to take other parameters into consideration, not just the that it is the busiest air route in the route. Yes, KL-Singapore may be busiest air route in the world, but it is probably also the shortest international route!

    to be fair, HSR cannot be compared to air travel. Too much time is being wasted going to and fro the airport, getting there early, checking in, waiting times, flight delays etc.
    But off the hand, I do think it might benefit SG more than MY. Should get SG to foot at least half of the bill.

    The ROI from the HSR tony refers to concerns the ticket only. But HSR actually is a game changer which will spur economic activities between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
    The HSR actually links two countries instead of two cities. Integration between 2 financial hubs will no doubt strengthen and unify Singapore and Kuala Lumpur's financial capabilities to take on the whole world. Tony's shallow take on the HSR is much regretted.

    • @yummycrepe

      Tony is basically very YAYA when he talks. It really annoyed educated listeners. His fans are mostly the village type people who cast him as a hero figure.
      He talks like he is a superior being knowledgeable of all things. If I were from the other races, I will think he is slighting me.
      You are so right to give a valid opinion to counter Tony rubbish opinion. The connectivity of KL and Singapore will create spark that surely create economy boom in a big way.
      When that happened, Tony will never come out to apologize for his rubbish comment that stained the mind of many people in his country. He is most likely to say he talks in jest and not meant to be taken seriously. What a joker he is.

    Lmao if building a hsr doesn’t make sense, why not upgrade the two tracks into standard gauge to fit in hsr stocks instead? Even if u said added stops it won’t become hsr anymore, why can’t just arrange schedules for direct trip and multi stop trips to coexist lol. And force ktmb to open their tracks to public to induce competition like Japan, since ktmb always can’t do a good job of providing stable service anyway.

    Need to stop trying to emulate Singapore, need to discover own USP. Will be a case of forever playing catch up, Singapore is a pure-play services that malaysia can only catch up with. Need to discover a complimentary niche to Singapore else forever competing in chosen industries. Brain drain biggest issue due to strength of currency, culture and identity. Else how to pitch to Singapore on a win-win when it’s only Malaysia win Singapore lose, Singapore also not stupid.
