Of course not. Main reason Malaysia is behind is cause of extreme racism.
If you force any company to literally give a huge chunk of any business in Malaysia to their rival, the company will not invest unless really forced to, such as mining companies and companies that have to be in Malaysia.
After the financial crisis, Mahathir took the opportunity to blame everything on foreigners to consolidate his power. Racist policies were rampant, causing the slow demise of Malaysia.
If you’re a Malay, you’re incentivised to be lazy. If you’re of any other race, you’re incentivised to leave if you can. If you’re a business owner you’re incentivised to only do the minimum investment, because Malaysia Govt can seize your whole business at any time and give it to bumis.
So the Malaysia Govt is filled with inefficient Malay bums. If you’re an investor doing big business, and costs is not a consideration, would you prefer Singapore or Malaysia?
In the end companies only come for cheap labour and resources, and nothing else. Low investment, low growth.
Show me the incentives and I’ll show you the outcome.

As a former Malaysian who has worked in Singapore now for just over 20 years, my experience is that the Malaysian system (during my time at least) did not have a system to seek out and reward its talent.
Can you imagine: after obtaining a decent bachelor’s + post-graduate degree from the UK from a good Uni (Cambridge) my starting pay was RM1,800. (Private sector). Granted it was a long time ago (1997). Anyway I gave Malaysia 6 years of my professional life then moved to Singapore who welcomed me with open arms. I proceeded to build my career here. Economic rewards aside, it has been a fulfilling and an engaging career.
On the topic of rewards, I am fortunate to be able to afford things like skiing holidays in Europe every year. I don’t think I could do that working as a professional in my industry if I had stayed in Malaysia.
I’ve always thought that the time for Malaysia to turn its act around, has long since gone. I waited and waited - no improvement. In fact things got worse. So in my view that boat has sailed. The corruption of the Mahathir era and the damage done during his administration was so widespread and the rot so deep, there’s no fixing that.
I wish Malaysia all the best. I really do. She has so much to offer. It’s just such a shame things turned out the way it did for her.

You want the currency to be strong? we need GST/VAT. GST/VAT not only gives a great revenue generator. but the main purpose of GST is to be used as a "FISCAL TOOL" for controlling the money supply M1 in circulation through fiscal policy along side Monetary policy. policymakers can adjust the GST rate in order to expend (loose) or to contract (tighten) the economy accordingly on the country business cycle. that's the reason why the whole world adopts GST/VAT, its has been proven for many decades GST/VAT were a great effective Fiscal tool, (as a TOOL not as revenue generators) example like singapore's fiscal policy. GST also will greatly improved foreign investor confidence and increase in "HOT MONEY" result in strengthening MYR value..no matter how much we talk about economy bla bla.. without an effective fiscal tool Malaysia can never become an advanced economy.. Since GST would bring additional revenues as well (revenue generating not its main purpose main purpose is act like a TOOL but it still gains more revenues the current tax system) gov could invest in better education, build more public transport for better productivity, invest in research and development. if malaysian dont believed in GST/VAT then stop dreaming of Malaysia becoming an advanced economy, keep on living in the jungle...

Weak currency makes imports pricier that's why Malaysians mostly cannot afford branded foreign goods compared to average Singaporeans. Stronger currency makes retirement easier when people can move to countries with weaker currencies where their money can stretch further. Most Malaysians who work in Malaysia entire life will find it difficult to retire comfortably, unless they want to live in poverty. The average Singaporean can easily afford bungalow and sportscar in Malaysia.

Stable govt, (no see-saw policies), Good Infrastructures, power supply, roads.. Good Skilled Labors, Engineers..etc, Security.. no riots, crime..etc, Other factors like no natural disasters, flooding, typhoon, low corruptions (imagine u invest $100k, then have to spend $10k in bribes,, you cant have that happening), also for Connectivity, Singapore to China? Malaysia missed the opportunity to ride on SG's economic successes when Ghani replaced Muhyiddin as Johor's MB in 1995. SG proposed IMS growth triangle in 1989 and went well till Ghani took over. However, Mahathir was not satisfied with the direction of this growth triangle and does not want to be SG's backyard. He wanted equal partnership but did not realised the huge economic disparity and international influences between SG and MY. So in 1994, knowing that IMS-GT will soon fail, SG looked north east, i.e., Suzhou Industrial Park, China (SIP) for growth. Instead of huge MNC companies setting up businesses in Johor, they went to SIP instead.
    What a shame.
Is it too late now to revive IMS-GT? Maybe it's worth another look now that China's cost is no longer cheap and all those geopolitical fight?

Mahathir's zero-sum approach to Singapore is because a successful Singapore is an antithesis to Malaysia's policies. Past leaders had this zero sum game mentality that need to win over other countries. It is time to abandon such archaic mindset and seek cooperation between neighbors to create win-win opportunities in the face of global economic challenges.

It's not just about keeping the talents, it's about bringing the money back to the country so it can grow it's infrastructure and system to attract more people to invest, live and work there.
A quick way is to make money from Singaporeans. Many Singaporeans are struggling from cost of living, but they are reluctant to move to Malaysia because it's generally a downgrade in quality of life. Poorer security, cleanliness, efficiency, education, opportunities etc.
Malaysia improving in these area will really flip the narrative around and Singaporeans will start seeing Malaysia as a viable alternative.

天马行“空”。😂One moment in SG, next moment drive to JB, then fly to Kulim, finally to Vietnam. Suddenly we are borderless country. What is not shared by the Minister is the policy changes to make companies in Malaysia pay higher, how the supply chains can be elevated, what's the policy change to retain the talent in Malaysia. Only a percentage of Malaysian living in Johor getting "low" pay in SG, but the minister failed to address they are many Malaysian who are getting high income, high skillset who wish to return but there is no equivalent opportunities. Singapore is a Financial /Aviation/maritime hub. There are many Malaysian who work in these industries and live in Singapore. What are the plans to create more opportunities and attracts fellow Malaysian to return home to work?

On the GST issue, there are exemptions for basic necessities therefore the poor are not encumbered. Whereas SST is not transparent like GST. It was really a big mistake to revert to SST as can be seen by the massive increase in prices since and more so with the increase to 8%.

politicians cannot be focusing on internal politics and forget about the competitiveness of the country --- stability of gov and its competency are important
with a neighbour like Singapore offering stability and meritorarcy, any missteps create push/pull factors in their favour
well, people toil for a better future for themselves and their families; delayed gratification
yes, Malaysia loses taxes as people work in Singapore but they gain SGD spending in Malaysia by their people and Singaporeans.

Rather than that, a simpler solution would just be to not make all the tax money flow to Putrajaya. That causes a big problem in all the other states because the money that can be used to improve the state all goes into the capital for nonsense projects like the Merdeka 118. Rather than try to smash heads with Singapore, making ALL the other states developed will give better returns with less difficulty.

Wealth is relative. You're rich only when you have more than everyone else around you.
What no one seems to mention is that Johor's cost of living is substantially higher than the other states. depriving the poorer off from necessities and increasing discontent.
Singapore had exported their inflation - It's costing them to keep the SGD up, but the alternative is massive inflation in a small country with very little resources, a tightly packed population, and wealth equality competing equally for those limited resources.

@YewOw Running a country is never easy as it is complex, consisting of many parts. There is certainly more than one way to run a country well, and even this is not static as the government needs to adapt to changing conditions, locally and globally. By just focusing on one aspect of a problem, it often prevents one from seeing the big picture. Many underlying issues with bad governance are multi-facet. I would argue that running a successful Singapore is far more challenging because there are far more less favorable conditions for Singapore than many other nations.

@@jk35260 That one aspect is a very important one - voter expectations. The very basis of a democracy.
Aligning public expectations with reality, and a country's vitality is much easier when there's no racial, religious, educational, historical and idealogical disparity to grapple with. There are a myriad of opposing groups with opposing goals and opposing views, with opposing methods, all persuing opposing self-interests.
Easier to contend with external forces, when the job of governing is a given.
