I am from Puerto Rico. We have acerolas, quenepas, guanabana, carambola (starfruit) and pana (breadfruit) just to name a few of our not common fruits. We also have yautia, yuca, and plátanos that are delicious vegetables.
I don't recall seeing these mangosteen. What do you call it? One of my last trips, we got a lot of quenepa, because it was in season, and the people from Spain who were with us wanted to try it
Acerola is Spanish for cherry.
Quenepas is Spanish lime,
guanábana is soursop
Yautia in English is "American Taro"
Yuca is cassava and plátano is plantain. Esas frutas SI SON comunes aquí. Lo que pasa es que a la gente no le importan las frutas locales porque no les gusta aprender de la cultura. Y al parecer tampoco se aprenden los nombres en inglés. If you're gonna talk about local foods, then you should learn their names in English, or their original scientific name since some foods simply go by that name in other countries. A quick Google search is simple and easy.

I ate several versions of mangosteen in Costa Rica. The trees are quite big. I tried one that reminded me of papaya. I miss living there, the fruits i got to try in 9 years were amazing. And there are lots more I've seen but not tried.

Loved this video when it first came out and got solidly hooked on the Mangosteen for about six months after... but only ate my first mangosteen this week and it was DELICIOUS. Romeo was on the money, as per usual.

This is my favourite fruit. In fact if you make juice out of the purple flesh you can get a high dosage of anti oxidants naturally but it is bitter and not sweet like the white flesh segmented fruit. It is indeed the queen of fruits. They say durian is the king of fruit but I really do not like it, that said the seeds of the durian contain an enzyme that prolongs the shelflife of yogurt. The flavour is like the grape flavoured hi-chew sweet.
I work in a grocery store that is known mostly for its produce. I had heard of mangosteen but I had never seen one until I started working at this store. I like to try different types of produce so that if my customers ask me what something tastes like or how to eat it, I can at least answer their questions. This is one I have yet to try, and lately I have been seeing quite a few people buying them. But no one has yet been able to answer my questions on how to eat one or what it tastes like. These videos are very helpful, and now I'm inspired to try this guy next.
To me, they are sweet and citrusy. If you put it in your hand, you can crack the shell by squeezing it between the meaty parts at the base of your thumbs. Sorry if that’s not super clear 😅

Hey Hey Hey, I have never heard of the mangosteen. I'm going to try and find it. Since you are introducing very interesting fruits. There was a plant in my parents yard growing up - It's called Monstera Deliciosa and the fruit is the flavor of banana and pinapple. Buon Appetito!

@@jacquithekd I am sure it’s different in every state but where I live is Maryland and we have a chain of huge foreign markets here. They are massive and have basically everything from rambutans to lychees, from durians to longans. Plus since it’s a big grocery market they have all the snacks from Thailand, Singapore, Japan and most other Asian countries. Drinks and fresh seafood or meats. The store is called H Mart but I’m not sure if they are in other states too :(
