In my experience there are two carpenter ant gels that work well. Maxforce FC (fipronil) and Optigard (thyamethoxam). On the outside, as the previous commenter stated, exterior applications of Termidor are highly effective.
I think I have these ants in my house. They are located near my hot water heater. I do live near a heavily wooded area. I bought some terro bait traps to try and get rid of them until the pest control guy comes. Will the terro work...says on the box it kills this type of ant?
capenter ants like tuna try baiting the tuna carefully with fipronil. also they do most of there foreaging at night use red cellarfane over your torch as they can't see red light and try follow them to the nest or get the customer to ,and kill them with a large stick with nails in it ,or other effective spary treatments

Look for a leak somewhere or some wet wood somewhere
In the Spring they eat honey jam etc. they eat and fill up, then go back to the nest. Follow them and flush with pyrethrin and or drone.
I just found a colony in one of my trees that I love...any suggestions?
Same here, there in an old pine tree and I have no area to fell the tree to, nor do I want the tree gone

They also love building nests in insulation foam.

Use the bait to find the nest , destroy the trail and the nest.
