- Tabu, with Joyeeta Dutta as the young Tasneem, Shubham Saraf as the star-struck Firoz, son of the Nawab Sahib of Baitar, and Kathak exponent Archana Tiwari as Tasneem's dance teacher.
One thing I would love to mention is that the lady who was standing behind the main actress is my kathak teacher
whats the singer name plz
@@harisshehzad8799 Kavita Seth
Wow!! That’s amazing!!
Awwww really
What's her name? And where?
this is a masterpiece and Tabu was extremely good
Tabu is such a fine actress, has always been.
The silent discussion between these two unknown souls of Tasneem and Firoj is so pure and then..
Irony is Saeeda herself connected them unknowingly.
I shipped tasneem & firoz more than the main leads! The chemistry🔥
Tasneem is from assam.....and we are so proud....and yes I shipped tasneem and firoz too :))

Thank you so much Mira Niar jii for believing in me... I am glad and thankful that I got featured as a kathak dance teacher in your amazing web series.
Best Regards,
Archana Tiwari.

The irony of this scene is spot on... The father in his hey days went to Saeeda Bai and did his bit of fun and frolic... But doesn't want his son to go there... He knows that his illegitimate daughter stays there, but never opens his mouth and keeps this a secret from his own son... Classic Indian Parents.
I think saeeda bai had an affair with the nawab instead of just fun or else how would he be sure that tasneem is his daughter! There was no DNA test during that time...
**Classic Indian Parents**
Dude wtf, these are very rare cases. This series has done excellent job in making you think in such a disgusted way about Indian relations if you're generalizing.
@@shrutinanda614 thats the same shit bro. And the town is small so he would know thats his baby she’s pregnant with.

I don't understand why Tasneem is learning Kathak. In the book, Saeeda bai makes a big effort to keep her away from all things associated with courtesan culture.
It is a perceptive question, I hadn't thought of it - thank you. You are right that it veers away from the novel. So, we are left in the realm of speculation. What options did tawaiifs have post-Independence? Bhatkande’s reforms and seminars privileged music and not dance - and male voices. Many women were pushed into sex work, though the kothas remained separate from other women. There were also differences in caste and class which determined their fate. Many women married musicians, and Ishaq is a prospect in the novel too, before he hits hard times and later shuns both of them. Some joined the theatre, radio or the film world. Would some have taught dance?
Perhaps Nair included it because it made for an arresting sequence. In the novel, Firoz is stirred by the mere sight of her, ‘He recalled his first glimpse of Tasneem and remembered the sudden and disturbing attraction he had felt for her-a sense that he had seen her before, somewhere ‘if not in this life then in some earlier one’. But visually, the kathak sequence also gives us a glimpse into the courtesan culture in Awadh?
@@a.sharon4238 I agree it makes for an arresting visual. But it would imply that Tasneem is being taught music as well as dance (I don't think one can learn either separately). And that seems to go against the spirit of the novel. Saeeda Bai is determined that Tasneem not end up like her. She wants her to be a respectable Muslim woman and make a respectable marriage (though having a "sister" who was a celebrated courtesan would seem to be a handicap even then). I don't believe Saeeda Bai approves of Ishaq as a suitor either. The show seems to suggest Tasneem will grow up to be another Saeeda.
Suppose we look at Begum Akhtar’s life, since Vikram Seth modelled Saeedabai on her, we know that she had to pass her daughter, Shammo, off as her sister and Shammo had multiple marriages and ten children, who Begum Akhtar provided for as her star rose. If you find out more about her, do let me know?
For women performers, there may be some specific differences between dance and music. For one, the end of the 19th century saw a strong 'anti-nautch movement', spurred by fears of syphilis and social purity. Even in the south, devadasi histories of Bharatanatyam were rudely uprooted at the beginning of the 20th century.
Be that as it may, I suppose our conversation is provoked by this in-betweenness that Tasneem lives in, and which the subcontinent is also experiencing at the same time. How brilliant of Seth to provide this perspective, when the narrative focusses otherwise on the moralizing caste-based, professional aspirations of the middle class. What else caught your attention in the novel? I am yet to reconcile myself to the shabby treatment meted out to your namesake!
@@a.sharon4238 I didn't know that Begum Akhtar had a daughter. Regarding Tasneem however, it seems clear in the novel that Saeedabai doesn't want her to have any involvement with the music industry. The show went in a different direction I guess.
I have actually written a piece about the novel, which you may find interesting: kabiraltaf.wordpress.com/2018/04/18/reflections-vikram-seths-a-suitable-boy-an-epic-portrait-of-1950s-india/
Regarding Kabir, I think that his romance with Lata couldn't have ended any other way. It was the 1950s after all and Lata knew that marrying a Muslim would mean leaving her entire family behind. Her mother would never have accepted it. In many ways the novel makes a conservative argument that one should marry within one's religion and caste. Both the intercommunal relationships end badly. Though of course even if Maan and Saeedabai had been of the same religion, a respectable man would not have been likely to marry a courtesan who was twice his age. But Lata could have married Amit without too many problems yet Seth chose to have her marry the "khatri" boy her mother approved of.
@@a.sharon4238 I wrote about the novel here kabiraltaf.wordpress.com/2018/04/18/reflections-vikram-seths-a-suitable-boy-an-epic-portrait-of-1950s-india. You may find it interesting.
On Lata and Kabir: I think it couldn't have gone any other way given that it was the 1950s. Lata knew that marrying a Muslim meant she would have to turn her back on her family. The novel actually makes a very conservative argument that one should marry within one's own caste and ethnicity. Both the intercommunal relationships are doomed.

Should ,not always show kathaak ,mujra type ,can't u show in temple, dance is not fr men entertainment, its, praise of God, love to god ,
Dance is a form of human expression. Human expression can be in any or many ways. In a temple or a brothel. Kathak or Bharatnatyam, doesn't matter. Till the time the dancer expresses themself, it doesn't matter what art form it is and where it is performed or for what purpose it is performed. Don't gatekeep art
Dance done for entertainment doesn't become "corrupted" or "dirty" compared to dance done in a temple. Don't bring your Madonna-Whore complex to art. Art is just human expression in its purest form. Whether it's done for the gods or other people, or just yourself is irrelevant till the time it is expressed.

A person with so much hatred against another of her ilk - you need great care.

God bless you
Mira Nair needs to develop a taste for good music. You cannot make a great movie with bad music.
Let me give you an example. Singing ghazals without training is like a Pop artiste trying to sing a Jazz vocal song...without knowing what Jazz is. Kavita seth is so bad that to a trained ear it hurts!
