Both Cone and Leiter are highly underrated. It's no coincidence that teams they were a part of were consistently in the postseason, if not winning it all. Great guys, and great pitchers.
These breakdowns are awesome. Kids are so lucky to have all this expert HOF information at their disposal. This level of expertise wasn't available back in the day unless you personally knew a pro player or coach and your typical JH, HS coaches even my college pitching coach couldn't teach most of this stuff. You were pretty much on your own to figure out all the nuances of how to execute pitches, delivery, grips, arm slots, finger pressure etc.
I remember when my dad came home and said " We got Cone " it was my senior year in high school and we lived an hour's drive from the stadium, it all came together when cone became a yank!!! Thanks coney!!!!!
Great pitcher & goes to show you that while your mechanics may not be what coaches are accustomed to teaching, if it's working, stick w/it. This includes the gripping of the ball on certain pitches.
This video is very interesting! Two great pitchers talking about fine pitching mechanics. I remember that perfect game- the city erupted that night! I'd also love to meet the set designer; that set is super cool!
I don’t think either guy gets enough props for being as good as they were. Cone especially. I watched both play and angrily as my phillies lost to the jays in 93. Solid pitchers they were.
Me and my dad saw his no hitter on Fox 5 at the time. My dad said two innings in: "He's going to throw a no-hitter" I said "Nah. the Expos have Vlad, he hits everything" He was right. We talked about it til this day and my dad says "Honestly, I didn't think he'd throw a perfect game"
Its very interesting comparing the skills and techniques used by baseball pitchers compared to fast bowlers in cricket where in both sports u have so many different variations of delivery to the batter.
What mlb needs to do is instead of trying to be "cool" they need to take what is special about the game the history, the traditions, the qwerks, and show people and embrace it. It is the best game on earth and they shouldnt dumb it down.
pitching staffs are run differently now because of the amount of guys from Cone's era that had Tommy John and other major arm issues before they were 35. I agree it sucks watching guys get taken out of a no-hitter after 6 innings because they're over a target pitch count but overall I think it's better for the player.
It is a shame, Dave. It is. Professional athletes are just not what they used to be. Today they are show dogs, their look and vibe matter more than their talent. Sure it doesn't account for EVERYONE, there will always be elites, true talents that will shine no matter what but, yeah, welcome to tomorrow. I guess...
@@mikeystarr775 I wouldn't call .20 far lower considering Sutton spent all his prime years in the NL with the auto-out in the 9 hole. No Cy Youngs or no- hitter. I'll take Cone but give Sutton his due. Lets agree to disagree
“Alright so wait, let me stop you there”

Can listen to them all day.
As a Yankee fan I miss Leiter doing games, and now enjoy the games so much more when Cone is commentating.
Al Leiter is so good at these pitching breakdowns. Great stuff.
MLB Network always goes above & beyond breaking down the smallest nuances of the game. Great work as usual.
STUD! You could never go wrong handing Coney the ball...
Or Edgar
@Coulter Gaske
"Nothing gets Edgar out"
- David Cone
@Coulter Gaske
It made me a fan of the franchise for sure.
That’s an amazing interview. More David Cone. An underrated genius
These two guys were gritty as hell, absolute gamers. So cool to see them talking to each other. Love it!
I swear to god the work mlb network puts out is absolutely amazing. I could watch this network all day

I bet these videos are a god send for young pitchers, Al does a great job of getting into the mechanics of why/how a pitch works.
My kid is 9 and pitches side arm. So good to hear about Cone's background
I remember when my dad came home and said " We got Cone " it was my senior year in high school and we lived an hour's drive from the stadium, it all came together when cone became a yank!!! Thanks coney!!!!!
Paul-E G'z
Funny. I remember when the Jays got him.
Please post proof within 7 days or I gotta call BS
Great job interviewing by Al.
these ex player interviews are great glad mlb is finally taking PR serious, next step is making the game more global
I could listen to them talking pitching all day. Both were some of my favorite pitchers when they were on the Mets
I got his autograph during a rain delay when he was on the Red Sox at the end of his career. I remember being so pumped!
Damn, great interview, curveball/ slider grips 2 Awesome!!
Love both of these guys
Big shout out to Al from Bayville NJ.
he was never on my fav team, but I loved watching him pitch

David Cone was a gamer. Filthy on the mound. Great in the booth as well.
Leiter and Cone are pitching masters.
I recall whne the Braves would play against David Cone in the WS.He was almost perfect. He was Money during the postseason.
When he asked him when the intensity started I was expecting to hear “When Pedro Guerrero charged the mound trying to hit me with his bat”
Similar to Mike Mussina in terms of repertoire.

Yogi and Larsen were there. Everyone knew he was going to throw a perfecto
David coming to the Yankees legitimized us... we were on our way!
@Coulter Gaske Griffey was dominating the Yankees those years. All time great
Good stuff.
Great stuff
I’m a 51 year old former DI pitcher...wish this info was available from former big leaguers when I was younger...I would have been a sponge
Never heard of this guy growing up but boy did we share a lot in common pitching.
Its very interesting comparing the skills and techniques used by baseball pitchers compared to fast bowlers in cricket where in both sports u have so many different variations of delivery to the batter.
4:12 Wonder if he was using that changeup grip to feel that nice tug on it before finishing in the Mets bullpen..
I wish AL would have played catch with David. Show us Cone's pitches with the explanation
Perfect
Depending on which gun was used, 93 mph in 1986 would be 99-101 today.
6:57 lost arts of pitching right here
gold
That was like Daniel LaRusso coming back from The Karate Kid. Amazing story.
"I probably wouldn't get drafted now"
And therein lies the problem with the game today...
No hitters are cool but perfect games are on another level. There's been what, 260 no-no's, how many perfectos? 23? A perfecto is super special.
interesting them saying two seamers were bullpen guys and four seam were starters. Now that's kinda inverted.
What mlb needs to do is instead of trying to be "cool" they need to take what is special about the game the history, the traditions, the qwerks, and show people and embrace it. It is the best game on earth and they shouldnt dumb it down.
A couple of those highlights at the begin weren’t even David Cone
...because they were Al Leiter.
"I remember that game in 99. I'm dating myself but I was in 9th grade"... I was in college
I held the curve ball with the horseshoe reversed. Ugh... My whole life was a lie. LOL
Always a 2-seam player, never knew I should have been relegated to bullpen in the 80's ....lol!

Does he mean regular season plus playoffs?
Yes. He said "including postseason."
Whenever I think of maddux, cone comes to mind and also 1 other. Wait for it
Saberhagen.
I call BS
Yeah it’s not a shame Al
What is up
The hosts on ESPN trying to act like they know shit is funny.
Come was a warrior. Would be an incredible coach.
His slider grip is just the same ass Andrew Miller

Crazy how he isnt a HOF
He doesn't have over 300 wins and doesn't have over 3000 Ks
Pwnzistor Neither did Koufax or Marichal, so I don’t think that’s really a fair qualifier
He doesn't even have 200w
He said “including postseason”
@@mikeystarr775 I retract my statement
It’s so sad to see David cone be resorted to being Michael Kay’s toilet paper. It’s even sadder to actually listen to a YES broadcast
Sold your soul to the devil for 3 outs? Yikes
I don't think Cone belongs in the
H of F but I think he's better than Sutton, who's in, so maybe he'll get in someday with these retro votes
Sutton had a far lower era over a longer career and won over 300 games
