Secretly hoping CC makes it to 3k strikeouts. With that body, with all kinds of knee problems you would have thought this man was done by age 34. But 18 years in the Majors... props, CC.
CC as a Yankee Fan we can't thank you enough for being so responsible for the team winning since you arrived. One thing you did more visibly than any pitcher or player in history is support your teammates and you deserve mad props for that. Thanks CC unlike many or most big contracts yours was worth every penny.
I have always said this about CC -- that he became great by reinventing himself when he lost his fastball velocity. Even though I can't stand him for having been most notably a Yankee (I grew up in Brookline, MA, and he owned my Sox so often I've lost count -- hated to see him start against us), I've always respected his intelligent approach to pitching and the way he was able to prolong his career by becoming a finesse guy and employing more pitches. He also comes across as a really Zen dude here, and I respect that too ("did it make you mad when you heard you were washed up because you lost velocity?" "no, it's just part of the game." Way to go, CC. Long life and happiness to you!
Smoltz kept throwing that little jab in there, "you used to throw hard, but you don't anymore". I think if i were CC i would've mentioned something like "yeah John, when you were a starter you were able to throw hard for 6+ effectively, but then you got old too and got moved to the bullpen"
@@OrionsVantage You should really look at history before just looking at the statistics. John Smoltz did get converted to closing for large section in second half of his career, but that was to the benefit of the team. Not as a result of performance, nor velocity change. He accepted the change for the team and excelled. BTW, he ended up as a starting pitcher at the end of his career (including at age 40). Mets fan that have respect for the Braves pitchers during that time period/generation.
It is a compliment, Smoltz is basically saying he has been successful as two different pitchers. CC doesn’t seem to feel inadequate because he doesn’t throw mid 90’s anymore it is just real life.
Zack Greinke has successfully transformed himself into a 100 percent finesse pitcher. Great pitchers can adapt and retool themselves like CC and Zack have done
Great idea for a party game! Everyone drinks each time John Smoltz makes a dig on CC Sabathia's lower velocity..... Everyone passed out drunk 4 minutes in....
So... wait a minute... he only decides to pitch smart once he loses his velocity? Imagine how good he would have been if he pitched smart in his prime.
I think it's more of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," idea. When C.C. was throwing gas, nobody could hit him so there was no reason for him to think beyond blowing it by the batter. As velocity dipped, he had to get more creative. That shift seems to be what separates most pitchers as they age. A lot of them can't change when their body doesn't allow them to do the things they once could.
Wow...at 5:10 I could have sworn that it was Chris Berman conducting the interview: the voice, the tempo. Smoltzy digging into the sports anchor game! Nice.
tinyman520 no, it’s severino. cc is 38 years old. his best moments are all in the past. he is no doubt a legend, but severino is a legend in the making
C.C’s experience is unmeasurable! When he left the team for rehab he came back a more focused pitcher. 13-0 or 13-1 for the Yankees when he starts after a loss. Love you CC!
if CC hit the weight room super hard to keep the strength and mobility he had when he was younger he could've kept velocity. I hope kershaw realizes this before its too late.
it’s crazy how we call 93 low velocity because the average is 95-96 i think, and as we know a lot of people hit 99-102 now. with the amount of time it takes the ball to hit the catcher, you would think that it’s impossible to hit a baseball, also with people with high velocity and good command, this is a sport that deserves more hype and recognition. getting back to calling low 90s low velocity is crazy because isn’t the mount like 80 or 90 feet from home plate? i don’t know the number, and pitchers with their different styles, the ball may look faster just because of their style, pitching is truly an art, CC doesn’t throw the hardest but got 3,000 strikeouts, that’s amazing
@@kadinbrabender9836 last year, CC had to reach a certain amount of innings pitched in order to get a 500k bonus. He was cruising in the last game of the season that he pitched, he was nearing the innings plateau, until he purposely hit Jesus Sucre in order to get revenge for the rays hitting Austin Romine. He was quickly ejected and didn't reach the innings # that he needed. The Yankees later gave him a 500k bonus anyway.
Andy Pettitte pitching past the age of 40 didn't have the velocity ever really in this career. So JS nailed it, you just won't have these long careers because everybody throws 98 but that shit doesn't last forever.
I'm watching this after Jared lorenzen died. CC weighs about the same as what Jared weighed while he was playing. I hope CC keeps himself in shape after he retires.
Dude's in the best shape of his life right now. He always said that he would once he retired. He lost a ton of weight years ago but it fucked up his mechanics and velocity so he gained the weight back so he could keep pitching like he used to. But once he retired he immediately started dropping weight.

Kershaw is just now going through this new transition of losing Velo also, new approach this season and future seasons he’s gonna be a whole new pitcher

Jerry Traveler I completely agree. Like I think Corey Kluber is a top 3 starter and he only throws 90-92 but has in my opinion the best slider in baseball right now
It depends because if you can get away with it then there is no problem but if you can't then you have to make changes and you say Nolan Ryan but you realized that when Nolan got to the rangers he already was a different pitcher because he wasn't blowing people away like he used to his velo dropped some miles per hour and he started mixing in his pitches like the change up so even Nolan had to adjust with a bit of lost in velo but he was able to maintain power his whole career so that's a different story a guy like maddux at the other hand couldn't do that so he had to adjust and learn to do it differently

Dinger Derby third all time in career strikeouts by a left handed pitcher. I think he’s done pretty well for not “pitching smart” over his career
He pitched smart but he wasn't thinking as much as he does now since he had velo to get batters out

Power pitchers dont think about smart. They dont have ti compensate anything for power.
