  • James Garner talking about MAVERICK for hours! Producer Roy Huggins screening every single episode of MAVERICK with you! For writer/producer and NY Times Best Selling author Lee Goldberg, it was a Master Class on making hit TV shows and crafting characters in screenplays. Lee joined host Rob Word to share some of his memories of the hours spent with Garner talking about “Maverick” and “The Rockford Files” and sitting with Roy Huggins for days screening every single episode of “Maverick.” Can life be more fun than that? Find out in this episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS.
A novelist and screenwriter with hundreds of mystery and crime stories to his credit, internet entrepreneur and author Lee Goldberg finally wrote a western. Called “Calico,” his book is a western with a twist. It’s set in modern times with an ex-LAPD cop sent to work in Barstow, California, for punishment and an attitude adjustment. What she finds is a dead body that catapults her into a time traveling murder mystery in the Old West. Typical of Goldberg’s popular mystery novels, this western contemporary, western set thriller is filled with his usual amounts of suspense and humor.
A western genre enthusiast and historian, Lee also talks with Word about GUNSMOKE’s nearly forgotten creator and writer, John Meston, and the evolution of the classic stories from radio to the long running TV series.
This rollicking episode with Goldberg and Word is followed by the recent GUNSMOKE MASH-UP. It’s an episode of the classic series combining the audio from radio and visuals from the TV series. The episode selected is the pilot for the TV version called “Hack Prine,” which aired on CBS May 12, 1956, but was originally scheduled to air in April.

Garner was a loyal man to his friends and co workers. He basically produced Rockford, fought for better writers. He got em. Fought for cast raises. He got em. Fought for the money the network owed him. They sued him. He countersued. And won. Big money. The man was unstoppable.

Jim Garner was one of my TV heroes. That being said, I always kind of rooted for JACK KELLY to get more scenes, because he was the brother that couldn't get away with what Jim's character could. Jim just had that flair. I even liked the preposterous "cousin" Beau. Roger Moore. Mr. Goldberg is wonderful. Keep the MASHUPS coming! You are right! The early shows are stronger than the later shows because of the writing and the focus was still on the main characters and not as much on the guest stars. I hope that you find a script where you can do another radio simulation with that wonderful cast that you had, too. Thank you!

Mr Goldberg is absolutely right about the relatively unheralded career of John Meston, who wrote nearly half of the radio Gunsmoke's 400 plus episodes, and nearly a third of the TV scripts over the series's twenty years and created all its characters. All we fans of that show owe him a great debt.
I remember the actual con on "Shady Deal". It was an ingenious stock swindle that involved nearly all the recurring characters of Maverick including Brother Bart, Dandy Jim Buckley (in an office and identity switch later recycled in the Cary Grant film "Charade"), Samantha Crawford, Big Jim McComb and Gentleman Jack Darby with Dehner's crooked banker who never had a chance against that group of seasoned swindlers and con artists as the mark. A masterpiece Huggins episode that's just about everyone's favorite including mine.
Again, Lee is right. The thing that made shows like Gunsmoke, Rockford and Maverick timeless and still entertaining no matter how many times you've watched each episode, isn't the plots so much as the characters and the compelling world the writer created for them to inhabit that make you want to keep revisiting it again and again.

    • @LeeGoldberg007

Thank you for all that you do. After Mr. Pointier's passing, my sister reminded me that when we saw Buck and the Preacher for the first time, we were surprised there hadn't been a sequel. As time passed, we watched more movies within the genre and speculated on other movies that were too good to fade away. If you could produce a sequel for any movie within the genre, what would be your top ten?
For me, the aforementioned Buck, "The Professionals," "Sgt. Rutledge," and, of course, "Silverado," not to mention a personal favorite, "Winterhawk." Then there is the non-period piece but modern-western "Way of the Gun."

Great interview with captivating trivia tidbits about two of the best tv westerns ever made! I will certainly look out for Lee Goldberg's books. And the mash up was a very interesting experience. It gave me the opportunity to listen to the Gunsmoke radio show for the first time. It made me wonder, since Chesterfield cigarettes was the sponsor, is this why Marshall Dillon's sidekick was named Chester? The radio voice acting was exceptional. James Arness's voice was closer to William Conrad's than I would have thought. Still, maybe because I grew up on the tv show, I prefer the tv version voices. Hard to beat Dennis Weaver's Chester who was not just a comedy relief, but became a strong character on his own on tv. Amanda Blake also had a more seductive voice than the radio version. And althought I love Howard McNear in just about everything he ever did, Milburn Stone's voice had more character and humor in my humble opinion. Thanks for the double program Rob.
