Schrade is quickly becoming one of my favorite blade companies. They are generally extremely affordable for what you're getting but the performance is comparable to much more expensive products. Also, great video Skall, objective review, only facts, while still being entertaining.
Good to see Skall getting his daily arm exercise plundering the forest of all it's dead bits. I can't imagine how much harder life would be for all those tree serial killers if you weren't around to dispose of the corpses! Skall is a true Woodland Hero! Huzzah!
Tayler L I strongly agree with you friend. I have mountain biking trails right across the road from me. Some people use them to hike and they're quite nice for hiking too.
looks like a pretty decent blade to take camping. Was looking for something that can cut small things up for fire wood and other bits. This review sold me. Thanks for the details!
i got a schrade brush sword... and after using it for a bit i found a nice blood blister on my ring finger, seeing as i can only get 3 fingers on it... i had to mention that seeing you are wearing gloves lol
I think the quicker finish wear might be correlated with the fact that you struck a charred piece of wood :) that kind of stuff you could use for polishing (and do a terrible job), but properties of charcoal are different from wood. Thanks for the insteresting video and the efficient way in which you convey information!
if skall puts a blade on a nuclear bomb and when he finds it back with just a few scratches hell say; "it can be a tad more durable" loving the videos skall keep the good work (:
First off, let me just say VIKINGS FOREVER!!!! That being said, you have some of the best UA-cam videos for knives. Thanks for the great review! I'm excited to try mine out when it arrives from Amazon!
For the price, Schrade makes a good product. I've got a Schrade pocket knife and kukri and I am satisfied with both. The blades are lower grade steel, but heat treated with a good balance of toughness and sharpenability. The handles are comfortable and the kukri sheath is very nice. The recurve blade can be a bit much to sharpen in the concave area, but there are tools available for that.
I have two shade machetes myself and they're both great, they dont perform quite as well as that one did but they have the blackened blades and that's exactly what they did
I've had one of these for a few years and it's surprisingly good. If you were trying to assign it double duty to cut down on gear it is a good machete, great chopper, decent knife, and a decent hatchet. Not an axe substitute, but honestly I haven't met a good axe substitute. However this blade with a good silky saw could probably handle just about anything you'd need for a camping /hiking trip. I usually go silky saw, Morakniv, and favorite hatchet. But if I really need to cut weights and space this and a mora or a silky would be just fine.
Skall, I just want to let you know that this video did not appear in my feed when you originally uploaded it at 21st. I just realized it exists after checking out your channel to see if I missed any of your recent uploads because of YT problems you mentioned.
For the first minute I thought Skall was using green screen, because the background didn't move at all. It was static. But hey, I guess that's to be expected in the woods.
Is the handle covered with a rubber material similar to the CRKT Chanceinhell? That stuff still smells strange and I'm talking about 2-3 years that I have it now...
That looks like it would be a fun knife to have with one when champing. Maybe not so much for a survivalist outing but for the sheer entertainment value of chopping ( well I enjoy chopping anyway). I will be getting this knife when I get the finances to do so. Unless you want to mail it to Alberta for another Canadian to do a review video with it? (Canadian shipping costs make it not the best suggestion, I know).
yess review vids coming again. Always like those very much. weirdly the tool stuff Always seem a bit more entertaining because the pro's and cons are more clear than with the sword's but i love both.
I have a S.O.G kukri machete from their SOGfari series its pretty nice honestly, though I dont enjoy the serrated back, I plan on getting a new one but the one I have now is pretty good for small trees and brush. This Brush Sword seems really nice but I prefer the kukri design in terms of utility and even self defense. do you have any preferences for for me Skallagrim?
I'm in the market for a good machete for carving my way through underbrush. This one looks like the best I have seen and still have a good defensive feel. I am looking to have a reasonable tip for thrusting, just in case I am surprised by an aggressive animal of sorts an wielding wildly may not be the best option.
You should check out the game called Tiger Knight: Empire War. It takes place in China during three kingdoms period. The game has great weapons and armor.
+skallagrim I think it would be cool to see you undergo a video series based on the following premise: Set a specific dollar amount for 2-3 blades that you would use. These blades (for different videos on each subject) would be based on the subject of an adventure. These adventures could be like this video involving the outdoors, HEMA practice, HEMA competition, HEMA home training, or cutting. Let me know if you think this is a worthwhile idea, I think you would do a great job of it.
Do you think a heavier blade of the same shape similar to the baseball bat swords you see in movies would have a lot more effectiveness in tree chopping
More weight would make for a more effective chopping tool. That's why axes have a lot of weight behind the blades. The weight drives the blade through. :)
this is very much like my work knife. only the one I use is a little shorter and is a bit wider at the belly of the curve as having a thicker spine (which is probably why mine seams to chop better) I think the problem you're having with carving is due to the way the blade is sharpened. what i've done with mine is sharpen the part closest to the grip to a finer edge for carving and such, while having a thicker profile on the mid part to provide a stronger edge for chopping, and a fine edge near the point for tasks like cutting fabric among other uses.
Aaron Hanson In most cases, scholars *do* know the etymology of terms, and this case in particular seems as conclusive as it gets. Also, Greek is a live language (quite remarkably).
Looks impressive even if it can't cut mature trees better than an axe. The spine looks bit more substantial than the standard machete, so it has some extra heft for thickets of saplings. Hopefully it's priced as reasonably as the parang they sell.
Those swords were actually based off an entire family of swords and knives, including the kukri, the kopis, the falcata, the khopesh, the saqqara, *and* the makhaira.
I have this blade and love it but also found it likes to stick in the wood , I sanded off the coating just on the belly and tip of the blade it cuts better and doesn't get stuck as much also if you melt the top of the sheath where the blade goes in you can improve the retention of the sheath .
That's why well made axes for things like felling and competition have convex geometry, not flat. You really ought not be using it as an axe at all. Anything it can't cut through with one stroke is where an axe should be used if at all possible. That's why the expensive custom version has convex grind instead of a flat one. Same weight, same balance, stronger edge, doesn't stick, high end super steel, neoprene rubber handle like competition choppers have. They're built to do heavy chopping. These aren't. The version in this video is a pre production sample with a different heat treatment on a different steel(3Cr13MoV- the Mo and V make a big difference in performance, especially with the right heat treatment). Whereas the production model has a very sub optimal heat treatment and a lesser basic 3Cr13 steel. IE you shouldn't expect nor will you get the performance from a production model you see in the original few test reviews that feature preproduction samples. So the they shouldn't be expected to do what you see these pre production samples do in these videos. They just aren't the same thing.
This reminds of the importance of a good utility knife for survival or skinning. There's so many on the market. I would trust a knife tested by Skallagrim. He seems.. thorough lol
"Sorry for a video quality" - shows perfectly crisp and clear image capturing time and atmosphere of place... He`s a perfectionist.
skall and his eternal fight and hatred for dead trees
I like how nonchalant Skall casts "haste" on himself :D
Berserker mode
Rage wouldn't increase speed but damage^^
It looked like he popped Time Warp and a Potion of Prolonged Power
I wanted to see x2, then x4 speed-up and then the tree eventually falling the fuck off. :D
Schrade is quickly becoming one of my favorite blade companies. They are generally extremely affordable for what you're getting but the performance is comparable to much more expensive products. Also, great video Skall, objective review, only facts, while still being entertaining.
found a fatal flaw with this sword
... it doesn't have a pommel
nodot17 yes but I think the curvature combined with a well timed parry you would be relatively fine
nodot17 What if it is forged out of pommel?
Now that right there is a HUGE red flag, I'm gonna pass on this one...
LOL i see what you did here. anyway, this is a machete and a real cheap one, definetely not sword..
Wait. Is this a sword or a machete? I don't want to go to jail.
Good to see Skall getting his daily arm exercise plundering the forest of all it's dead bits. I can't imagine how much harder life would be for all those tree serial killers if you weren't around to dispose of the corpses! Skall is a true Woodland Hero! Huzzah!
I wonder if anyone has been roaming around these woods and have seen Skall just choping woods with swords and ran like hell.
It might be dark but it is beautiful! I love living here in the northwest, all of the hikes are incredible.
Tayler L I strongly agree with you friend. I have mountain biking trails right across the road from me. Some people use them to hike and they're quite nice for hiking too.
Tayler L Very beautiful indeed! We don't have such forests where I live (not very near at least).
Dude has SWORDS FROM THE FUTURE.
I got one when they first came out as a present from my uncle. I've kept it by my bed ever since next to the 9mm and .357, gotta have options.
Hopefully at the end of 2023 they still hold up as well as that one did, mine arrives in a few days. Glad you did the video
Your going to have the burnt and dead tree protection society after you. :p
I don't know why, but I just find it so very satisfying when you chop up tree bark and branches. Very hypnotic.
Someone walking through the woods is gonna think a bear is on the loose seeing all these destroyed tree branches and stuff lol
Mike Wazofski skallagrim is straight

if skall puts a blade on a nuclear bomb and when he finds it back with just a few scratches hell say; "it can be a tad more durable"
loving the videos skall keep the good work (:
Still, the blade is of such good quality, that he had to comment on the look and aesthetic to find problems...
"I'm not convinced by the color..."
It's Orcrist, Thorin's sword from the movie The Hobbit, but with a black blade (and I'll bet it doesn't glow blue when orcs are around.)
Superb forest green screen effect in the abusive tests, it's like I'm really there.
Nice video! The blade shape reminds me of Orcrist from The Hobbit.
I'm just happy you can swing again.
Thanks, me too. It has been quite a recovery time.
can't stop watching the sneak peaks of this I'm more than likely buying two!
When you sped of the footage while chopping it made me thing of Blinkin from Robin Hood Men in Tights.
FWIW, carving with a long blade like that is easier when you use the portion of the edge closest to the handle.
First off, let me just say VIKINGS FOREVER!!!! That being said, you have some of the best UA-cam videos for knives. Thanks for the great review! I'm excited to try mine out when it arrives from Amazon!

10:50 the droning in the background and the close-up make me think of just how fitting an ax murderer you'd make. IN A MOVIE!
You should do a woodcutting asmr. It's really pleasant to watch somehow. The sounds when throwing it in the log was especially satisfying.
it looks like Orcrist. plus i need to know when its available since im already sold on it
I have two shade machetes myself and they're both great, they dont perform quite as well as that one did but they have the blackened blades and that's exactly what they did
i was able to visit victoria bc a couple months ago, i love the forests there. here in ontario they are snarls of trees undergrowth and bloodsuckers
It was quite therapeutic seeing you hack into that last tree lol.
Priscilla you say?
hmm this version of the dagger look a little funky, maybe he used the wrong soul?
Moster wutcher, what brings you here?
I've had one of these for a few years and it's surprisingly good. Priscilla's Dagger in mass production? Finally. We don't need to cut off dat tail anymore.
For the first minute I thought Skall was using green screen, because the background didn't move at all. It was static. But hey, I guess that's to be expected in the woods.
It would be quite an accomplishment to move a tree into my video room and place it in front of the green screen.
I like your music selection at the beginning of the video.
You should do a collab with man at arms where you review a word that they make
Mine just came in the mail today. Thanks for your video! You really convinced me to buy it. Great throwing skills! Happy new year!
Hi. It looks like you may be in the Pacific NW by the types of trees I see in this video. Thanks for the video.
Is the handle covered with a rubber material similar to the CRKT Chanceinhell? That stuff still smells strange and I'm talking about 2-3 years that I have it now...
I love the satisfying thunk of a knife thrown into wood
That looks like it would be a fun knife to have with one when champing. Maybe not so much for a survivalist outing but for the sheer entertainment value of chopping ( well I enjoy chopping anyway). I will be getting this knife when I get the finances to do so. Unless you want to mail it to Alberta for another Canadian to do a review video with it? Hey Skall, great video. Take care.
I have this. Outstanding performance tool
Nice blade, Schrade did a fine job, attractive shape, but very practical.
You don't throw a machete... unless you're Machete.
-ZNA Productions
yess review vids coming again. Always like those very much. weirdly the tool stuff Always seem a bit more entertaining because the pro's and cons are more clear than with the sword's but i love both.
the intro is always so awesome!! So is the rest of the video without a doubt.
I have a S.O.G kukri machete from their SOGfari series its pretty nice honestly, though I dont enjoy the serrated back, I plan on getting a new one but the one I have now is pretty good for small trees and brush. rThis looks like something I could like - durable, practical, simple.
Aren't u doing weapon mods for Skyrim? I have most of the swords u introduced in my moded Skyrim.
not as a sword/weapon, its not GTA
I think it would be useful to do another paper cutting test afterwards to see exactly how well the cutting edge held up
If you lived somewhere that didn't have any trees, but there were lots and lots of walruses just laying around would you improvise?
Nice, and you can always refinish it, or paint it a different color.
You should check out the game called Tiger Knight: Empire War. It takes place in China during three kingdoms period. The game has great weapons and armor.

Seems like a good survival tool when there's a lot of thin wood and small branches. Probably cuts up meat well too
Do you think a heavier blade of the same shape similar to the baseball bat swords you see in movies would have a lot more effectiveness in tree chopping
More weight would make for a more effective chopping tool. That's why axes have a lot of weight behind the blades. The weight drives the blade through. :)
Skall, the exercise really helped you there, I would've left that tree fifteen whacks ago... XD
Have you ever tried the Silky Nata machete/hatchet? I've got one and I love it.
this is very much like my work knife. only the one I use is a little shorter and is a bit wider at the belly of the curve as having a thicker spine (which is probably why mine seams to chop better)

I would ask you to show us what it does against tangles of smillax and tasajillo, but I'm guessing you won't find anything like that in those woods.
good that u are ready for the day the trees strike back Skall^^
I LOVE your new intro!!!! Very badass! Good vid too. Looks like another blade for my "To Buy" list.
Is Makhaira a reference to the Latin word for saber, Machaera, because the sword looks a lot like an ancient forward-swept saber.
It could be since a lot of things are derived from ancient, dead languages but scholars don't know for sure
Aaron Hanson en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makhaira it seems I had things backwards. Machaera is the Latin spelling of the Greek word Makhaira
Aaron Hanson In most cases, scholars *do* know the etymology of terms, and this case in particular seems as conclusive as it gets. Also, Greek is a live language (quite remarkably).
Ever thought about starting a wood chopping ASMR video? Hahaha I don't get tingles but that noise and atmosphere is really calming XD
Skall can you do an asmr video with wood chopping?
lol I was thinking the same, paper cutting sounds really good
Jesus that was a torture test. It has nearly convinced me to buy the damn thing! I love machete sized blades that are durable
Daniel O Yeap, it held up well - even the finish degraded gracefully IMO.
Skallingrim could you possible do a video about pros and cons of qdifferen't forms of medical euro prism martial arts(the weapon ones)
Have they announced what the possible price for these will be yet?
Nice music choice and good review as always!
Thank you, I'm glad that you liked my music. :)
Just got mine in the mail today its very good for the money just a little over 30 dollars on amazon and it has a great sheath.
The beginning where it's sped up reminds me of Men in tights.
Looks impressive even if it can't cut mature trees better than an axe. The spine looks bit more substantial than the standard machete, so it has some extra heft for thickets of saplings. Hopefully it's priced as reasonably as the parang they sell.
where do you live? I love the forested area you shoot your videos in!
I want one. I love recurved blades.
the blade looks very much like Orcrist
Those swords were actually based off an entire family of swords and knives, including the kukri, the kopis, the falcata, the khopesh, the saqqara, *and* the makhaira.
Hey you should review those Tramontina machetes.
I have this blade and love it but also found it likes to stick in the wood , I sanded off the coating just on the belly and tip of the blade it cuts better and doesn't get stuck as much also if you melt the top of the sheath where the blade goes in you can improve the retention of the sheath .

T I M B E R ! (chopped tree fall towards the main camera)
You have served us well (salute dead camera)
and here he is, skallagrim trying to kill another tree
Which would be better for self defense. This or the Kersha camp 23
This reminds of the importance of a good utility knife for survival or skinning. There's so many on the market. I would trust a knife tested by Skallagrim. He seems.. thorough lol
I like the looks of this.
What would be the best hachet to buy? Ive been looking for one but can't decide
I think you should try out the Skrama wilderness knife made by Varusteleka.. You might have fun with it and I'd really like to see someone abuse it :D
Well, I want one for camping and totally not for the potential apocalypse (>_>). I just want to know how much they cost and will be checking back
Is that just basically a falcata blade?
Oops, nevermind
kinda looks like Goblin Cleaver from The Hobbit.
Hey Skall ! I really like your Top 5 videos. Could you please do a Top 5 Machetes / Knives ? By the way, keep up the good work !
How well did the edge hold after that? Still able to cut paper? I didn't see any chips so that looked promising.
how much will it cost? I really like this thing!
thanks for the video. seems to be a great chopper for live smal trees and lims. it has some Elf looks to it i think😁
well this made itself his way riiight on my list to buy:D
I'd like to see a version that comes with a guard.
hey friend which one u will prefer camp 14 or this one??
