  • This is either a short sword or a very long knife, depending on how you want to look at it. Either way, it's an affordable, functional reproduction, and here is my testing and review of it.
It's a peened full-tang construction made of unknown high carbon steel (possibly 1085 or 1095). The blade did well when cutting soaked tatami mats, and it was impressively solid during harder tests, chopping dead wood. Handles nicely, with light weight and proper balance. Overall easy to recommend for the price ($70-80 USD).

I hope you read this as I want to apologize for not being able to support your content through super chats or patreon. Because I am budgeting for a PlayStation 5 in case I cave and buy one off eBay... I need it for reason I won't get into, because over-share, but when you read my message during a live stream a while back, (I instantly regretted even mentioning it.) and said you understand they are pricey and hard to find...(and this next bit I'm going to type is all on me. I made myself feel this way.) I felt incredibly guilty, and selfish, I tried joking in chat to ease it and didn't work out so well, and I bailed. So yeah, again I apologize for my selfishness. The next time I catch a live stream I will super shat ps5 or no ps5.(again this is on me.)

In all fairness to the katana, it's a pretty decent sword design and includes a lot of things that compensate for the glaring inferiority of Japanese metallurgy at the time (the folding, the differential tempering, etc. It's massively overhyped, sure, but that tends to be a thing in Japanese media in general, and it's far from the only weapon in the world that is far more popular than it should be. (Honestly, I don't understand why people can watch an anime like gundam that massively overhypes these ridiculous-but-cool war mecha, watch Hellsing with its ridiculously overhyped firearms for Alucard and Seras and Walter's insane piano wire nonsense, and yet when it comes to a medieval setting where it's overhyping a katana they believe every word of it.)

They were the poor Southern folks the elites conned into fighting and dying for the elites' 'right' to undercut the poorer Southerners' economic opportunities via slave labor. Therefore, my statement stands, the Confederates were superior in almost every way, unfortunately for them the one area the Union excelled was in industry, add to that their ready supply of unwilling conscripts right off the boats, and tendency to use "colored" troops as cannon fodder, and it's no wonder they won. “I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” - Abraham Lincoln, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1861
It is not immoral to defend your home against invaders; and that entity which was founded through rebellion by slave owners like Washington and Jefferson as well as tolerated slavery in the slave states that remained in the Union (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware) has no standing from which to judge the Confederacy. Nor does the president who gave constant assurances to the Northern public that any freed slaves would be remigrated back to Africa.
This was a time when the United Sates was still referred to as these United States. It was understood as a political union of sovereign states. Many had never even left their home state in their lifetimes. Our ancestors would have never agreed to enter this union if they knew it was a death pact from which they could never leave.
“The State of Massachusetts has threatened, indeed, on four separate occasions to secede from the Union. First, in the debates referred to on the adjustment of the State debts; secondly, on the purchase of Louisiana and its admission into the Union; thirdly, during the war of 1813; and fourthly, on the annexation of Texas, when, we believe, one chamber of her legislature actually passed a vote of secession. On these occasions it was no mere act of excited individuals, but the general voice of the community. Yet this State is now the loudest in denouncing it, when inconvenient to herself; and a bastile is now said to be preparing in the vicinity of Boston, for the incarceration of those as political prisoners, who simply utter the opinions which, when it suited, this very State has so often and so vehemently expressed…
In one of the debates in the New York State Convention, Hamilton made use of these words: ‘To coerce a State would be one of the maddest projects ever devised. No State would ever suffer itself to be used as the instrument of coercing another.’ His far-seeing description in the Federalist is but too applicable to the events of the present day; and remarkable it is that he, the master spirit of the Unionists, should have denounced as ‘madness’ that coercion which is adopted by his followers at the present day.
But there was a consideration of still higher import. The Constitution was a voluntary act, framed on the principles of free, mutual assent, and common belief in its advantages. To introduce force as a means of maintaining it, would be repugnant to these principles. It would be a commencement on the voluntary system, to be continued under compulsion. Force is an attribute of monarchy; the throne represents and wields the strength of the nation. Each part is subservient to the whole, and none can revolt without foreknowledge of this force to encounter and overthrow. But the basis of a Federal Republic is the reverse of all this. It stands upon consent, which is the abnegation of force. In place of submission of part to the whole, the parties are co-equal. Compulsion is not only inapplicable, but opposed to the principle of the system. And the men of that day were too logical to be unaware of this; they declined to incorporate with the structure they were rearing a principle directly antagonistic to it.” Excerpt from “The American Union: It’s Effect on National Character and Policy”(1862) by James Spence, an anti-slavery Englishman
If there was a left wing secessionist movement a majority of liberals would probably support it (as they did support the Seattle “autonomous zone” in 2020.) In a 2021 YouGov survey nearly half of California democrats support their state seceding even with a liberal president in office, one can safely assume that number will rise if a Republican, especially Trump, gets back in office. Any attempt to force them to stay or occupy military installations on their land would be viewed by them as an act of imperialism and a betrayal to the US’s supposed democratic values. And they would be correct.
A union that claims to rest on the democratic will of the people cannot legitimately force them to stay when they have democratically elected to leave that union. After the Civil War any claim that the US is a voluntary union that rules through the consent of the people is utterly hollow.
“In front of every farm-house would be a large assemblage of whites and blacks, of all ages and assorted sizes. Our boys amused themselves by throwing “hard-tack” to them, and then what running and tumbling and scrambling would ensue! Little *blacks (not the original word used) and little whites, little dogs and big dogs, all joined in the race, and by the time the “hard-tack” was secured it was difficult to determine what were the original ingredients.” - a Union soldier stationed at Shreveport, Louisiana after the war
(Goodrich, The Day Dixie Died, pg.189)
“Hundreds of thousands of slaves freed during the American civil war died from disease and hunger after being liberated, according to a new book… [As] Downs shows in his book, Sick From Freedom, the reality of emancipation during the chaos of war and its bloody aftermath often fell brutally short of that positive image. Instead, freed slaves were often neglected by union soldiers or faced rampant disease, including horrific outbreaks of smallpox and cholera. Many of them simply starved to death… After combing through obscure records, newspapers and journals Downs believes that about a quarter of the four million freed slaves either died or suffered from illness between 1862 and 1870. He writes in the book that it can be considered “the largest biological crisis of the 19th century” and yet it is one that has been little investigated by contemporary historians… Many northerners were little more sympathetic than their southern opponents when it came to the health of the freed slaves and anti-slavery abolitionists feared the disaster would prove their critics right.”
    -The Guardian, June 16, 2012
“All things are subject to interpretation. That one interpretation prevails over another at any given time is a function of power, and not of truth” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Insane that someone would defend slavery and the Confederacy today, especially given all we know. As for whether the Confederacy's purpose was to defend slavery I think the best answer was given after the War by the ferocious Confederate partisan John Mosby when he surrendered, gave his oath of allegiance and resumed his law practice. Paraphrasing 'It was always understood by us that we were defending the slave system of our society and there was no better reason for the war.'

The saber manuals issued at the time(I forget the author) were, frankly, pretty rubbish, and coupled with the fact that almost *no* cavalry units on either side had access to grindstones or any feasible sharpening infrastructure, most of the time their blades were completely dull, as the factory had made them. This fed into a popular theory on both sides of the war that a regiment of cavalry troopers armed with carbines and revolvers could singlehandedly massacre a charge of troopers armed only with sabers. This wasn't true, as was demonstrated on a few occasions in the war- the effect on morale of a cavalry charge with sabers usually overcame the effect of even rapid fire, small-caliber pistols. Confederate cavalry was indeed better in most ways in the first 2/3 of the war, but by the end the damage to the Confederate heartland had crippled their cavalry.
Also, we only have a few sources talking about big knives like these being used in combat- most of which came from the Siege of Petersburg in 1864, which was trench warfare. And most of these knives were carried(if they were carried at all, as most of the ones we see in photographs are just props for the portrait) by infantryman for use as a tool.

The M1898 Dutch Naval Cutlass was one such example, captured by the Japanese from POWs of the East India Trading Company, the Cutlasses were cut down to about 18" in length, and often had the basket removed.

I don't think 1055 is high in Carbon content. On the other hand, you would be amazed how low is the Carbon % in Low Carbon steel types. Talking types waaaaay under heat-treating possibility factor. You still can have a nice blade made out of 1045 because it's not a poor ass type. I mean, it is, in fact, good quality when it comes to impurities. A well-tempered, well-made blade out of 1045 will obliterate any few hundred years old, historical regular sword saber in any edge to edge contact. 0,45% works better in carbon steel as it tends in a stainless one. Even if stainless steel will have better (alloy) composition due to improvers in its chemical composition.
You could argue that these are not even (low) alloys. Kinda true but, not all. Every kitchen on the ship is made out of low carbon, stainless alloy.

@@pumpy2728 BTW. Do you know what is 1055? It is standard, like 1045. You can't make it poor or worse, shitty, you can't make it rich either. It is EXACTLY what the norm stands it should. It is up to specs for 1045. If it's cheap - good for you, you just got a reasonable price. It is easier to work with 1045, and manufacturers do not always ask for norm certification. Making low-budget products, they already choose 1045 over 1075. So why not get even cheaper - not certificated 1045 comes in. Not like it is not 0,45%. It could be, but not that common (then you can get anything from 0,6 to 0,33% of C - happens in case of cheap blades made of damasteel.) More like it is higher in impurities.

Since the blade is supposed to be a general tool, I can certainly imagine a situation where having a mirror inbuilt could be useful, especially in a wilderness/survival setting. Beautiful resonation from the strike and exceptionally sharp. Same sheath as you have shown. Only down fall is no way to properly secure to a gun belt, etc. But I was impressed. I bought one of these from an old leatherworker/re-enactor/mountain man-style combat instructor several years ago, but it had no markings and I don’t remember why I couldn’t find out then if it was useable or a display piece. I have been concerned that the tang might snap if I tried to use it for anything as with a lot of cheap blades. I’ve been trying to find out more about it, with zero luck, and then I saw it in the thumbnail for this video. This is amazing! Thank you so much for solving this great mystery I’ve had. I bought one based on this recommendation. After handling the sword myself, I agree on all points Skall made.
I made a few mods on mine:
    1. Carved/sanded a flat facet onto the left side of the grip where my thumb naturally goes. In combination with the more oval portion at the butt end of the grip, this helps me with indexing for edge alignment. Applied linseed oil after alterations on the wood grip.
    2. Pounded the top chape of the sheath into a flatter shape to add a bit more friction and retention.
    3. Wrapped the grip in a single layer of silicone self-adhering "rescue tape" for a bit more grippy texture and slightly more girth.
    4. Convexed off the edge bevels. This sword came with a very axe-like 30 degrees-per-side edge bevel, which is a good apex angle for the intended application. But the v-grind results in very abrupt bevel shoulders that just add a lot of resistance to cutting. I convexed off those shoulders and made a smoothly radiused transition from the primary blade grind into the apex. It cuts much better now despite the edge apex remaining very robust.

I would say,the lenght makes it shorter than you average machete, while being longer of even the larger part of the bowie spectrum. I thought it would be unwieldy but Skall moving it proved otherwise. If in the shortsword/longknife debacle the french briquet fill the short sword part, this fills more the long knife part, with all the major characteristics of the large knife, and with some quality of life adaptations that make it a more efficient weapon. Many know that a Shuang Dao butterfly sword is really effective in the enclosed spaces of a city ,this bowie is slightly bigger and sturdily built, so i would say it is even better ,because multipurpose, while being lighter and faster than a machete. I have to specify that i am refferring to this specific model, since Skall has shown bigger, longer or differently shaped ones. Windlass really chose the best medium for this weapon type.
When i discovered this type of bowie i quickly dismissed them as brutish, crude, poorly sharpened bars of metal, like when knife companies try to make a sword with the same balance and construction of a knife. But this really changed my opinion, and i believe that it would really fit the role of "urban sword" , as one if the weapons of an hypotetical "street though" ,together with revolver, flat sap and knuckleduster.

Civil War reenactor here, perhaps I can offer a bit more insight: The vast majority of those knives you see in photographs were photographer's props- you see a lot of those photos with mismatched muskets and revolvers as well- and these knives were definitely more tools than weapons in their actual usage. We have a few accounts of them being used in hand-to-hand fighting(namely in the Petersburg trench combat of 1864) but otherwise, very little sources to indicate that their primary use was as a weapon. Of course, they look awfully mean so it's great to have one just to make you feel safer :)

My X5 Great Grandfather died to a Confederate commissar but not after being defended by half the generals in the army. The reason? He walked home back to northeast Florida from the front to tend to a sick family and even sent mail back to command saying he'll be back soon. His death was the last straw for Florida and they pulled out not soon after.
So tell me again the Confederates had a moral shortage right after you tell me what your ancestor was doing during that time.
PS we never owned a single slave ethier because we were too poor and it was immoral to us. Can you say the same?

As mentioned in the video it's a really good sword. I've had mine over a year now, but one thing I've found is that my specific scabbard was a bit too tight on the sword which meant that if you left it in the scabbard any more than a day it would start to eat into the sword. Nothing a bit of oil and polish can't fix, but good to know anyway before you buy. Still a great sword all the same.

It's been a while but as always an Amazing review. Thank You. I own one for a couple of years now but I understood that it was not utilitarian like a machete because of the tang but You have proven them all wrong. To me it's THE Antique Combat Bowie.

I have one; had for about 5+ years... Lived 3-4 for those years at sea. Back edge sharpened; all very sharp. Has been my Pirate sword for years (my longswords to unwiedly on a boat)... in fact, only put back in storage (under my folded clothes) a couple of days ago. Needless to say, it has much more lovely patina then yours :) Ever since (having) lived on a sailboat, shortswords have taken my eye.

in my opinion there should be this, munition grade, version of every sword, but the makers wouldn't agree with that opinion :D

According to Museum Replicas this Windlass D Guard is 1055 high carbon. Made to take punishment rather than retain a keen edge for a long time. I'd looked at purchasing this model but ultimately did not. 1085 would've been perfect, even at a higher price. Adventure on my friend, Phat PS: Love the channel!

The question you posited about what weapon a person might carry if guns were completely outlawed and we had to turn to other weapons in a much earlier video. This is it. Maybe carry a form of buckler with it but yeah.

Windlass makes good knives. I have more than a few.
    😉
This one costs (+/-) $150 now. Still worth the price.
    It’s made from 1095 steel.
