You made my day Skall xD
Castlevania 😂
Symphony of the Night made me want to collect swords.
The idea behind the waves on the blade on the kriss is that whenever you thrust it creates a larger wound while saving weight by not having a very wide blade
I swear you have brainwashed me so much, that when I played the Blood and Wine expansion of Witcher 3 and when I saw a kreigsmesser being waved around I got it.
I saw Cara on campus for the second time yesterday, and every time I see them I have to stop for a second to make sure I'm not crazy.
Heh, we are mere mortals like everyone else. :)
Skallagrim lies and slander. :)
Skallagrim are you sure?
The handle of the Albion Knecht may look like a Knife because it is one.
You said it yourself that it's called a War Knife.
Stefan Payne my thoughts exactly.
Doesn't mean they need to sell it with a fork and a spoon. It could look a bit less like tableware.
Well...no, because that's the point of the Weapon. It was allowed to wear because it was "tableware" and not a weapon (knife instead of a sword).
I agree that this makes it not look so good, but I prefer details like that over looks.
elricdotah Its classification as "technically not a sword" didn't depend on what the grip looked like, superficially, but on its construction.
Hrotha, though historically. What would they have been able to use to have an easier time loopholing the laws? A Messer which looks like the one he has, or a messer which looks even more like a sword?
Could you make a video about wavy blades? Pros and cons? General facts?
Heeeeeeeeyyyyyyy! I know you from Minx's channel. Hi bud.
Hi.
For example, are they better at binding the opponent's blade than a similar straight blade? Do they get caught in the target like a serrated blade?
John Doe I'm not sure myself but try to look for flamberges. Also serrated blades look nice but they get stuck in flesh, a flamberge is different from a serrated blade.
X Infinity
The hit would most likely give you a small bruise but wouldn't faze you.
Town Guard side sword is probably the nicest sword you have right there in my opinion of course. I REALLY do enjoy look at it. It's elegant and cool looking at the same time!
I need it in my life
When Skall said the number one would be a sword that people would find hard to associate to him, I tought it would be a katana...
Thank you for placing kris ( in my country is called keris) to be the most aesthetic blade. Kris not only from philipine but also almost southern south east asia.
Just noticed that little intro, NICE
...very aesthetic

I predict this video being the most viewed. Just the name of this video is enough to bring many subscribers that are just searching for cool Swords on youtube. Good job skall. love ya
dude same. when i got into european martial arts and blacksmithing i really grew to appreciate the simple beauty and craftmanship of european swords
Your knowledge of swords blows my mind every time I listen you and feel your excitement , it is catching once again well done.
Very nice lists. Skall, your taste in swords is magnificent.
There had better be dual wielding katanas in this video or else... **tips fedora forward aggressively** I will say "KISAMAAA!" in an angry voice.
James C. Highly doubt it.
The day Skall-sama does that is the day I deem him irredeemably full of inu kuso.
This is gold
Well, there is dual wielding sabers in this so... close enough ?
Vanzgars just Vanzgars not weeb enough
This video truly shows off your taste in swords and now I see where you draw your experience from. Thanks for putting all these up, man. I appreciate it, being someone who knows less about the craftmanship it takes to create a true work of art.
Really happy to see you speak highly of the Principe. It's my first Albion and I can't wait to get my hands on it in the next month or two. Would love to see a full review if you ever pick one up. I made sure to let them know I was buying it because of you.
By the gods, how I want that kriegsmesser! But with that price, importing taxes and all, i'd be better off learning how to make one and buying the tools :S

that renaissance longsword is my number 1 for aesthetics. holy shit man, i love longswords and that crossguard, that shit gets me.
I just love how the Lockwood longsword looks. And green goes surprisingly well with it.
Will you review the swords from The Witcher 3, kinda like how you reviewed the swords of Skyrim?
Witcher 3 has wavy blades as well lol. Actually you should review all the weapons from witcher 3. Even the poker.
WiffyLight I agree
The Albion The Knecht Mark II Sword looks a lot like the Iris sword from the Hearts of Stone DLC . . . and I want it.
the Witcher actually has pretty practical swords
All of them are beautiful and more historically accurate than most historical movies
lol how awesome would it be if in medieval times people would have reviewed swords in front of the crowd as skall does :D
I have a feeling they did, to an extent. When a new model/style was invented the inventor had to have a way to peddle it, even if it was only to people of means. The masters would then figure out how to use it. I can picture a couple of knights hanging around BSing about the latest hardware coming out of Spain, Germany, Italy, etc...
Yeah, not to mention probably some lordlings or other people with the means to buy expensive gear they would want to show off to their friends and peers.
DatVocals! perhaps a swordsmith would explain the different varieties of sword to an armorer (though a swordsmith at the time might more likely have specialized in only one or two types of sword)
DatVocals! He'd be the most famous sword sales pitcher in all the king's land
what if they had like a medieval version of BLADE Show lmao
Those are fine-looking swords! I have a soft spot for sabers, but the town guard looks absolutely beautiful I can't deny it. Can't wait for when you get a kris and start testing it!
Randomly found your channel. Really like your reviews here and details about various swords. Strong work!
So now we all bid like crazy on skalls Ebay-stuff so he can buy a kris #3 again?^^
That would work. :) Doesn't have to be "like crazy" though, the kris is not all that expensive.
I seem to remember the Chinese saber was a gift to you and she called dibs on it?
*****
No, I bought the dao as a gift for Cara.
***** Ah. Very nice
Brett
Of course, we're still married. And Cara did show up in a recent video. ua-cam.com/video/sYL5fzjfiEE/v-deo.html
Hey Skall, as a fan of "traditional filipino weapons", would you consider doing a review about the "Ginunting"? It's the sword of the Kali-style I train and therefore I'd realy like to know what you think about it. Greets from Germany
The kriss isnt originated from the philippines. Kriss existed in indonesia and some parts of southeast asia in muslim majority population
@Old Soul Keris is originated by Javanesse with India influence (as you mention as hindu) in ancient time. And at old times (when dutch starting to land or could be older), Javanesse had to immigrate both Phillipines and Malaysia.
What a fantastic list Skall, and I like that you divided them into two categories. When you brought out the Lockwood longsword I fell in love with it, especially in that Dark Forest Ranger green. One should wear a matching colored hooded cloak while wielding such a beauty. Sometimes a simple aesthetic is very pleasing. Of course on the opposite end I really enjoy the Town Guard Sidesword, what a brilliant combination of a well tapered and cut and thrust shaped blade, with the elegance of a rapier style hilt. That commissioned piece is pretty amazing design and pulled off 100x better than your first commissioned Viking sword like object. lol ....
Who can argue with the Albion Knecht as you favorite practical sword. The Giant German War "Knife" looks like a fantastic weapon to handle in the proper environment (aka the forest so not to hurt someone else), I like the utilitarian aesthetic as well. Oh and I and your significant other's love for Chinese swords is pretty cool and I like the look and functionality (from watching you two use it, sadly I never have handled a functional sword) of that sword, and I too am a huge fan of the GREEN wrapped grip on that sword and your others, so much better than boring black or brown. Thanks for sharing.
I can't wait to see your review of the Lockwood sword it looks really nice!

-he says in a room decorated almost entirely in maroon while wearing a maroon over-shirt
Hey Skall, I'm a big fan, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a wavy blade like that known as a flamberge?
yes if xou talk about a german longsword from the rennaisance with a wavy blade.
Josef St so that isn't just a generic term for any sword with a wave pattern blade?
Sam Guglin yes
mryupjup The name is for the blade design, it could be on about anything, from daggers to greatswords, but the greatsword type is the most well known.
Undulating blade
I love the Kriegsmesser so awesome and the first long ssword looked amazing. green my fav color as well
Great vid Skall, especially like your weather report style with the blue screen swords. Cheers
Me like:"Damn, I like The Knecht." *looks up price* "Alright...... guess I`ll by a Spyderco Delica next."
Nothing wrong with a Delica. :)
German Survivalist Exactly my thoughts while watching this video.
Skallagrim e.g. It's the sales pitcher of the medieval age
I just had an eargasm when you, as a non-native speaker, pronounced "Knecht" perfectly.
He is a native German speaker.
@@TF_Tony Oh shit I didn't know that.
Cool blades, great video and I love the tee shirt. I have the Japanese version of Symphony of the Night in my Sega Saturn right now.
Love the Symphony of the Night shirt, great vid.
#1 no detachable pommel... what a shame.
It's top 5 swords, not weapons of mass destruction.
Haha. I approve greatly.
A SHAMEFUR DISPRAY!@!@!!"
Heh, I actually find your practical list far better looking than your aesthetic one ^^
Love your videos Skall, long time subscriber... was wondering if you would ever be interested in a video ranking you top favorite swords/knives youve owned for like theoretical apocalypse (like if you had to outfit yourself realistically to travel and survive in a world collapsed)
I would just like to say this is a great channel and I love what you're doing with it :)
Thanks!
Your top 1 pick for most aesthetically pleasing is one of the most hideous things I've seen :D

Great choices all, Skall!! You have exceptional taste in blades sir. :)
That sword at the start is so awesome!!! I want it!
I just now noticed the little ponytail

ahh damn I thought I had that lel
I guess it's not really a sword now that I think about it lel

The practical list is really gorgeous too...
I really like the brief intro, it does its job well.
skall we need wavy vs straight cutting test
Now I'm very curious to see your armory, do you have weapon racks for all those swords and other weapons?
he's got a video where he show's his improvised weapons rack
Gotta love that Castlevania shirt. Keep on rocking that thing, Skall.
When he said his top choice was something we wouldn't normally expect from him I assumed he was gonna grab something from Cara's arsenal...but I was hoping it was a katana.
Pfft, really? xD
hahahahha i think the same XD
evan shankar
Not in general, I do like other swords as well (Filipino, Indian, and Middle Eastern for instance), but katanas are just not my thing.
Guys never mind that the joke was he hates katanas, well hate is a strong word...but lets put it this way. If there was a self driving car and it had to swerve into a jaywalker or a katana fan. Well you guess who he rather it swerve into.
hahahahaha, hell
Skallagrim are you also excited about Mount and blades bannerlord? ☺
It looks soooo good! 😍
I'm so hyped. Looks amazing!!!
Tiche CoMC My man!!!
Hell friggin yeah, buddy!
Give it to me right now!
mordhau is the flavor I savor
But the Knecht isn't a sword, it's a knife. Honest governor.
In Malaysia and Indonesia, the Kris is the size of a knife, but in the southern Philippines, they turned it into a sword.
The guard for the Keris/Kris traditionally is used to stab hands that try to grab and control your wrist, that's why it has that sharp point, but this doesn't apply to larger Filipino Kris swords, but for the rest of us in the Nusantara archipelago that's what we use the guard for.
Excellent concept for a video.
No kilij for aesthetics? Even though you have a pretty poor quality one it's still gorgeous with that double S shape. You should give it a shaving sharp edge and see how it does against your best cutters
That Kris looks like a heavy modified version of Indonesian's Keris or the combination between Keris and Parang/Golok (Both are Indonesian's traditional weapons)
Keris was made wavy-shaped because of reasons. from what my grandfather told me, it was made like that to inflict more pain when it used to thrust. it's not that good for slicing, but it's really painful when it pierced you (also some Indonesian martial artist used jin / genie INSIDE the keris. We, Indonesians, were known for our mythical practice, man)
well with the southern philippines (where the kalis is from) being so close to indonesia and malaysia, we were definitely inspired by your blade but needed a bit of a filipino flare, so we added some chopping power lol.
Buk Lau hahayy, chopping power. so, kalis has wider and thicker blade? and from what I saw in the video, it seems that kalis is also almost as big as traditional machete
Riki Shikato thats right. machete, bolo, shortsword, whatever you want to call them, are the most common in the philippines in general. but in the south, besides the wide bladed kalis, they also use the smaller kris dagger as both a weapon and status symbol.
+Buk Lau oooh, I learnt something new today. thanks for the info!
I started respecting elegant craftsmanship so much in recent year
comparing to more elaborate/fantasy/artsy like crafts.
a lot thanks to you and other serious channels on this topic
so yeah great video man ♥
rapiers wtf
Love the shirt. Still one of my favourite games
At 3:49 you said number 4 instead of 3
3:46*
the messer was designed to have a steak knife handle, so it would legally be a knife and civilians could carry it.
That is actually a misconception. There are no documented cases from the relevant time frame in Germany, the Messers country of origin, where civilians were forbidden to carry swords. On the contrary, citizens were often required to own arms by the city council, and wearing swords around was such a common display of pride and status that restricting someones right to wear a sword was used as punishment for disruptive behavior.
It´s more likely that the knife-hilt construction has its origins in medieval guild law, where knifemakers and swordmakers were seperated guilds which had strict rules on what they were allowed to make and what not. Basically, the knife-turned-swords could have been a way that the knife smiths got their share of the sword making business.
If you ever do test the Kris, I wager you'll get better cuts on soft targets, not hard ones like wood. I think those blade shapes are designed for deeper draw cuts and thrusts, or at least that's what I remember from those Celtic spears
Skall you should make a video talking about your top 5 favorite/recommended makers to buy from!
when you said it was a type of sword you don't cover often and we wouldn't guess you liked it I immediately thought Japanese or Filipino.
Yeah I thought something Asian. Skall doesn't like disk guards or pommels that can't be unscrewed. (Also love your profile pic :))

Damn, that Lockwood SL-1009 looks awesome with the green grip and blackened hilt. I juggled it and the Albion Talhoffer in my head for a week before I made the decision to order the Talhoffer.
Skal, your Castlevania shirt is awesome.
7:02 as a nusantara people, im proud 🇲🇾☺️
I can't find anyone who makes a damn Yatagan
Me neither.
isn't a yatagan basically a hybrid between a scimitar and a chinese dadao?
Darklighter89 It's a sword associated with the Ottoman Empire, just look it up, it's gorgeous imo
Almost nobody does. The only one I’ Found is by noblie, and is essentially the price of a car.

Love the Symphony of the Night shirt 👌
Both number 2s are lovely.
Can I come to your house skall?
No. Intruders will be ended rightly.
YOU LOOKIN 2 GET POMMELED?
Pommeld rightly
Damn You actually responded. With pommel joke. I've died. Best laugh so long..
...yeah,some of those pummels don't have good aerodynamics ...
Nah, it's just the study of how air flows over objects. It's used in everything. Cars, ballistics, swords, etc. Anything where airflow is relevant.
Well the pommel won't be as good for throwing if it isn't aerodynamic.
ᕦ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)ᕤ Ultimate #POWA pommel destroys all armor
I'm glad I discovered this channel
Oh Skall! A local radio station around me played a snippet of your dueling rules video for some reason. I was at work at the time so I didn't catch if they said your name or not, but it was certainly interesting to suddenly hear you talking out of nowhere.
so basically, top 1 for aesthetics is katana and top 1 for pratical reasons is katana. yes. thank you skallman.
Did u know about an old sword made by a muslim with a technology and technique that even modern technologies today can't even recreate? It said to be a 2 pointed scimitar that's so sharp, when clashed with other swords, the other swords got cut!
Muhammad Hamiz Highly unlikely
That sounds like bogus. Source?
The claim "modern technology can't recreate this" is always nonsense. It usually comes from a misrepresentation of what archaeologists mean when they say they don't know how a particular historical artifact was made. It means they don't know how people were able to make it with the technology they had available at the time. There is no historical sword (or any object) that couldn't be made nowadays, the question is just can we figure out the exact way they did it?
no, just no
I think he means the damascus steel. However it's greatly exaggerated. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_steel
I think it's a joke >.>
Your favorite color is green as well
That's awesome !
Lockwood swords are *so* cool looking, and the scabbards make them even better.
I love the long sword you chose for #5. Good lord it's steep though! $1300 and a 9 month lead time. I think I'm going to pick it up though, so thanks for that! A nice long sword is missing from my collection and that one looks fantastic and I value your input!
Good vid.
Still hoping you consider doing the comparison tests with your Messer and CS's Messer.
I guessed right when it came to the number one aesthetic! :D
That Tinker sword is far more gorgeous than the two cutlasses, in my opinion.
Aww, I really like that one-of-a-kind longsword. So many things to keep my hands safe...
I woild love to see an albion principe review. Everyone seems to love it.
Wonderful list. Skal, one question and 1 request:
Q:- Of the renaissance era complex hilt type swords, which do you think balances handling and cutting best while remaining comfortable and beautiful?
R:- I'd love to see you try/test/review a Schiavona. To me they're one of the most beautiful sword designs ever devised. There's only a couple companies that make them now, and one of 2 of the most beautiful ones aren't around anymore. To me, the Question and request might go hand in hand in that I wonder if something like a schiavona might not be the answer, but I have no idea. Some side swords, Mortuary or Claymores also seem decent, or even an Indian Ferengi or Khanda... but the latter 3 don't seem to have hilts nearly as comfortable as a side sword or Schiavona. But I'm not experienced like you.
I'd LOVE your insights on this.
these are my favorite kind of videos.
Will you review the berserk? I think it looks amazing and really want to see a full review
I watch your intro like 3 times every time I watch one of your videos it's so cool lol
I also really love the albion swords aesthetically
love the t-shirt, Skall
Digging the new shirt, Skall!
Can we get more cutting videos with the messer? That thing is so beautiful and powerful. If I ever get a high quality sword, I'm going straight for that thing.
I have seen the kris video. I mentioned it in comments in a video a few months back as my request for you to do an impression video on krises, because I was interested in knowing what your opinion of them on the practical level was. So I would love to see kris tests; you should totally get one.
The only real blade I have is a Filipino kris, which I more or less inherited from an uncle. It's a very cool blade.
That Town Guard sword is possibly the prettiest sword I've ever seen. I've wanted one since I first saw your video on it. Of course, it's way outside of my price range.
Bonus points for the Alucard/Castlevania shirt. :)
I really like how the albion kriegsmesser looks, the fact that it is a really good sword that doesn't look so special just gets me really interested
