- I visit the Sheppard Ranch to learn more about Idaho Pasture Pigs as part of our Pig Breed Series. John Sheppard shares with us the origins of the Idaho Pasture Pig - Kunekune + Berkshire + Duroc - and how they are an excellent choice of pig for homesteaders and farmsteads.

You get a sense from this guy's presentation of how important an individual farmer or homesteader's circumstances are to getting animals that fit with what you're trying to accomplish. It's not a one size fits all, insert generic pig into slot A kind of prospect. It requires a clear understanding of what your goals are, and what your resources and limitations are, and what kind of animal is going to work well in your individual system. Really enjoy this 'researchy' type content, and look forward to seeing an update on the home front.
i love how you are featuring other farms and the animals they excel in but i miss buddy hugssssssss
:) I'll get some Little Buddy content soon
Thanks for another great interview, Dan! This gentleman was an excellent presenter, very informed and obviously very passionate about his pigs. I love learning about livestock breeds and the way they're developed. I'm planning on creating a miniature meat goat by breeding Boer/Kiko does to a Pygmy buck, so videos like this are right up my alley.
you're welcome!
Good day everyone. Nice video, Cryptocurrency still remains one of the best online investment mostly when it comes to Bitcoin. being the largest asset so far, although bitcoin trading and making good profits from trading bitcoin seems to be a bit difficult for most people out there because they make the wrong approach and strategy when it comes to trading. As a trader, so for i have been successful trading bitcoin because i was smart enough to do some research on making good profits daily and got to find out about a working strategy and signals provided by a pro trader known as Richard Bruce. During my first month i was able to grow my portfolio from 2.40BTC to a total of 4.7BTC with Mr Richard daily signals which you will agree that is a very good profits, so i would say don't rush and sell off, grow the little you hold with a very profitable signals. I'm getting my first 4 IPP gilts in a couple weeks so I'm really glad I found your channel. Thank you for the great content.
Great video! I love learning about all the different breeds! Thanks so much Dan these videos are really gonna help us when determining the right breed for our homestead.
Awesome ! I'm glad!
Thank you for spot lighting this breed. I can definitely see the Kunekune and Berk mix. I bet the ones that show the Duroc coloring are unique. Miss you all! :)
Some very useful info, thank you. Sending love and light.

Tell the farmer from Sheppard Ranch to create content of YT or Rumble. He was excellent in his presentation.
I love what you are doing
Thank you
Agreed on the production compromise. We do same. Totally worth it.
Beautiful family and beautiful pigs. Thanks for the informative vid on IPP's. I have seen commercial breeds drilling to China, apparently these guys don't. This is the first I have heard of the quality of meat...."better than the Berkshire, and more marbled with fat." Once again, I see a video of IPP's interacting great with kids and humans in general! Is this a reliable trait of the IPP?
Every animal is different but from what I've witnessed, they are docile
Really appreciate all the great information. Thanks!
Thanks for the information. This is one breed I was wanting to investigate for my farm when I get there.
you're welcome, Terry.
Beautiful pigs there.
🌻have a wonderful day🌻
Besides grass would love to know what he feeds. Saw a few eggs and perhaps corn meal on the ground? Thanks for doing IPP. A few advertised around here this year, but didn't know anything about them.
It is a hog mash - a mix of grains and minerals
I think those were golf balls on the ground.
Great series, thanks. Hope things are getting better for you and yours off-camera, Dan. A guy you've never met in Michigan is praying for you.
Thank you Leon :)
I agree with John that the "pasture" in "pastured pigs" means silvopasture traditionally.
Thank you, looking into getting an Idaho pig.
Riding a pig must be full of fun.
Just picked up an IPP feeder. I am trying to figure out the best breed for my homestead. I am trying to raise me current feeder for mainly grass. Did he talk to you about how much grain he feeds his pigs daily? Love the videos. Currently in LE and trying my own UA-cam channel.
I don't recall how much feed he gives them but IPPs will need more grain or other feed than grass
Kunekune and large black or a GOS mutt? Good looking pigs for small stead or a pastured animal at any rate.
How was this cross developed?
Duroc x Spot followed up by a Berk boar?
Good video
Glad you enjoyed
Good video. Missed youse guy So!
So glad you posted this! I'm strongly considering the IPP but just wondering - do they do okay on forage vs grass? I'm up north of Spokane and up here I just have mostly woody shrubs and very little grass. It's perfect for goats but I'd love to find a pig that would utilize this brushy stuff as well.
I can't say for certain, but I believe they do. John used his IPPs to do a lot of brush clearing if I remember correctly
We had a litter of IPPs in a small patch of overgrown woods. They did a fantastic job cleaning it up.
SO glad to hear that. Pigs are definitely a part of the plan, and I think this sounds like the right breed for me.
Interesting. You switched up the filming style again. :) You do like trying new things.
It'll be interesting to hear how you rate the different breeds across various criteria if you still want to keep raising pigs. Prior to this, I'd thought red wattle sounded best. This one's close, though.
The red wattles got a glowing review. The IPPs seem like a really good hybrid...the best of both worlds (faster growing than AGH and Kune but still easy on pasture and good feed conversion)
The Grass-fed Homestead: How does the Idaho Pastured Pig compare to the Mangalisa hog? Tim
I would love to see more of a daily vlog
Thank you, John; this was very informative. Until now, I was completely ignorant about IPPs. This may possibly be the breed for me, but then it would be a Washington Pastured Pig. (jk)
Thanks, Dan. I really enjoy these vignettes about various breeds & landraces. You may sway me away from my beloved GOS pigs.
Probably not! My next video in the pig series is on GOS pigs! :)
I'm thinking of trying one or two
If you want them for pets and not consumption, can they eat poison Hemlock? I've heard they can, but I'm overrun with the stuff! WHat about Wintercreeper (a vine) that is invasive, can they eat it too?
I don't know about that.
Now that is some big pigs...but still cute....I have a pet Juliana pig she is so smart....
Have you checked out my Juliana video?
I looked for the video about Juliana pigs but could not find it....what is the title...

I miss seeing you and Buddy, perhaps appear in introduction or conclusion?
How old are they before you can breed them? Looking for a pig that can graze just for feeding our family. Small homestead pig that is not aggressive and easier to handle than 700 to 900 lb pigs.
I have a pig for a pet. Pigs are sexually mature at 3-4 months old.
How are they in warm climates? Hot and humid really
Plenty of people have them in the southeast US and they do fine
Sir!!!! I have been looking and searching for a bigger Kunekune type breed of pig. Since watching this I started looking for local farms that may have these. I have yet to see this consistency in size and head type. How can I contact you?
dan at grassfedhomestead dot com
Very cool!
How can I get I touch with you? I live in East Texas.

How’s the farm going Dan?
Those are some big pigs.
It's going. I'm still way behind on getting the chickens on pasture :(
The Grass-fed Homestead well if you weren’t behind on something you wouldn’t be farming lol. I’ve been build a manual hay baler so I’ve been behind in my garden weed city now lol.
Hope you get it all.
haha! Indeed!
we all are missing you and your family and the homestead. one other point, with youtube restricting contents of subjects that occur on the farms and then we are subjected to ashley madison .com commercials on homestead videos? what a shame. Hope to see you lil buddy, wife and the homestead.
Where do you live and what do you feed them?
Idaho - John feeds them a pig feed mix from a local grain seller
ipps are most beautiful pigs
What are the dangly things that hang down from some pigs lower cheeks and do they have a purpose?
they are called waddles. They have no purpose
Does John have a channel? How do I get in touch with him?
he has facebook. look up "Sheppard Ranch" in Idaho on facebook
@@TheGrassfedHomestead thanx.
Do you sell piglets?

Why do I see some farmers feed (pigs in this video, but I've seen other animals) on the ground?
Seems to me that you loose a % of the food, and the animals ingest a % of foreign matter.
There is certainly a little loss by feeding on the ground. I think John usually uses hog feeders where they can eat free choice out of a large container.
Now I could go for some bacon...
I live in idaho falls
😊
That is a lot of pork on legs.
💜💜💜💜
can you raise feral hogs? if not, y not?
probably
@@TheGrassfedHomestead u should start the feral project
