Phenomenal episode, Troy! I wanted the system for about 25 years, I’m gonna make this required watching for my husband! Thank you so much.

Takota Coen has this set up and a video showing the layout.
I believe he has 6+ segments in a pie shape on fairly level land......-KJ

'Wagon Wheel' is what all the major "pastured" eggs producers use and it seems very promising as long as you have land that is suitable for it... I have a similar landscape as you do (we are only a few hours apart) and it is rather tricky to fence off to accomplish this method.

Smart idea. This setup will make our pigs happy. Fresh green grass possibly all the time.

Some of these ideas are interesting enough for me to try my chickens! Like the sorting ideas.

my land is also very step hills, i have 4 areas set up in the old cut over, i never move the pigs except to load out for kill day, or move my boar in, or move the sows into a closer area for winter, it take a number of years for pig to root out all the brush and roots to were grass will grow on its own ready for my cows to feed on, we dont have to worry about parasites as out 40 to 50 below long winters do not allow for them to live. the few time i de warm, have yet in all the years to find dead worms in there poop as you do in say de worming a puppy.. i have a lane that runs between to cows and the diferent bush pig areas as i let the cows run a summer in the brush before the pigs go in, as the cows push over all the young poplar trees to eat the leaves off and the new limb sprought witch it a lot the bit off, by the next your the pig go in the poplar have rotted enough the pigs bust them up eating the dry bark off, with in 3 years tthere is no sign of the rotted poplars any more, after a few year of the pigs in an large bush area, grass comes up on its own and now i move that wire up and open it to the cows, calves steers heifers and run a new pig wire in a new area for them to work at. the turn the years of composted leaves wood into the red clay and root out all the roots, cant ask for anything better, but it takes years, unless you run a few hundred pig per year

Interesting vid. My property is all steep and I have wondered how to range the pigs over the land. I have electric cells that pugs move between cells but not always adjoining as bush and terrain doesn't allow. Not sure what I'd call my system but feel I'm forced to have central food and water area.

Troy. Everyone knows you rotate clockwise. Pasture names should be clockwise too. Seriously - good video thanks.

Do you see a clear standing heat where she locks up? You could try AI on her to eliminate her being the issue. Are you seeing him penetrate when he tries to breed?

Curious to hear your thoughts about Joel Salatin’s model where the feeder is mobile and the water is a quick connect hose network and a mobile tank.
Heard you mention that you would discuss Joel soon, so I will stay tuned.

You can also contract out a dirt company to come in and shave out x amount of hill for the dirt and you can replant trees etc as needed or wanted. That way you have more flat land you gain over time with more infrastructure like roads at no cost to you. Iv seen that done in places. Iv also seen where you contract out pulp wood cutters to come in the make and gravel new access roads and upkeep existing roads to points to get the pulp wood and that's done to the severity of the land owner with 0 cost and even make a few bucks.

I wonder; can you use your existing shed as the center with a yard around your switching gate? I haven't really seen the land beyond the shed. You can also have more than 4 yards running off the hub.

Troy, how much space in a wooded area per pig, would you recommend? We're in WV and have nearly identical terrain as yours. 3 pigs per 1/2 acre, 1 acre, etc....

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  3 роки тому +1

10 pigs per acre as long as you are rotating them out

I have a pawn on my property and I'm wondering if you would recommend making that my central location for the wagon wheel?

Wouldn't it be better to put your central location/ common area at the top of the hill not the bottom? That way if they push some land around then you just end up with flatter land. If you're at the bottom you end up with a pond.

I own but have of the crown of the ridge so I couldn’t have the top be centralized
