This scarred me as a child and I'll never forget it.

I haven't seen this film since the International Animation Festival in Ottawa in 1990!

I saw there it in '99. I was disappointed not to see at any of the successive festivals. That whale in the Nazi uniform definitely makes a good villain.

Oh wow, that's the darkest cartoon short I seen in recent years. It kinda reminds me of Hotel California by The Eagles.

This is one of the most uniquely bleak and hopeless things I’ve ever seen! I thought the whale was one of the most unique villains I’ve seen yet, too. There’s a short called Decorado that really messed with me, and I feel like the guys who made it might’ve seen this one. Also, the panda’s voice sounded really familiar to me.

Actually, the whole point of the film is that people don't want to get in. It's supposed to parallel the disease of addiction - what looks like fun at first, but once you want out there's no way out. You're trapped.

Animated dystopoeia by Swedish artists. Cannot recommend highly enough.
You will shudder and admire how the animators depict the authorities.

Filmen verkar vara inspirerad av Ralph Bakshis filmer som Fritz the cat och Wizards.

Definitely contains a ridiculously ham-fisted "we live in a society"-tier message (The play theater being empty, the whale mascot being in a literal Nazi uniform, etc. etc.) and some of the... I'll just say caricatures haven't aged well, but there is some fairly creative stuff in here and I don't consider art being blatant with its symbolism to always be a bad thing. The art is gorgeous as well.
In this day and age where the subversion of childhood wonder and whimsical entertainment is an incredibly common theme, especially in horror circles, it's very interesting to see an earlier instance of something people have grown much more accustomed to. Makes me wish there were more adult-oriented takes on this sort of thing.
I think the most effectively disturbing/upsetting part of this film was the fact that the main characters were all children, considering all the decidedly un-child friendly things they end up participating in, up to including sex.
Intriguing film. I'm very mixed on it.

i think i get what this short is trying to do but the part with the hamlet comes off as pretentious boomer whining

As much as i hate this kind of misanthropic, crypto-anti-capitalist garbage.... the aesthetic of the backgrounds is really awesome. It would have been cool to see a full length feature in a similar style, without the pretentiousness.

Nothing crypto about the anti-capitalist and anti-consumerist message in this cartoon, haha :)

The ending kind of ruins it, though.

@@BleedingEdgeOfProgress You think? I quite like it. All you have to do to stop this miserable spending is to be done with it, but Åke is not allowed to be done with it. The world has a vested interest in giving him the means to remain miserable, and does so. I think that's a good point to end on.

It's not misanthropic and the anti-capitalism is from the right, whether or not the filmmakers intended that. There is no criticism of inequality in the film, the capitalists aren't even greedy, but consumerism destroys all values.

If anything, i think the creators just wanted it to be shocking and seem credible enough that there was some kinda message behind it, though there's actually none.
