My last trip to that Hallowed Ground was the day after NPS officials closed Little Round Top to begin this important project. My trip was to visit the very ground where my Great grandfather, Lieutenant John McGeehan stood with his 146th New York Volunteer Infantry comrades on July 2, 1863. I was disappointed to be unable to stand on those west facing heights, but I am also thrilled today to see that attention is being made to made that ground accessible for many years to come. I hope to return on August 8 to mark the date when my great grandfather gathered with other organizing committee members at the unveiling of the Warren monument. Bless them all.
I waited 35 years to be into of Little Round Top. I was there I was there in April, and I was so disappointed not to be able to stand on that hallowed ground. But well done folks.
I am overjoyed and excited to see a view as it should be. I have visited, fairly often, and the trees blocked everything. As a child I could not see the story, it made little sense. As an adult and Infantry soldier I could not understand the supposed advantage. Only today with the trees cleared can I now see the story. THANK YOU. God Bless.
I attempted to view the new work on little round top, but unfortunately there was no parking all four times I drove over the hill. The little bit I could see was only of the parking area. And that area and the work done there was disappointing. The road has been choked down to a narrow cattle chute type arrangement, with stone curb added on both sides. I saw NO improvement in car parking, and all of the parking on the Right side of the road is now restricted to Bus parking. And the beaver pond at the foot of the hill is an absolute desecration of the battlefield. There was NO BEAVER POND HERE IN 1863.
Well done. Sympathetic conservation work always carries a risk of objection by some, but the concept of accessibility for all is really important. Unless you have been to Gettysburg it is difficult to appreciate the beauty of the park, and all the numerous ways people have for enjoying it, from family picnics, to joggers, dog walkers, sports people, naturalists and those just out for a leisurely walk. The park is for everyone, not just civil war history and military buffs, and of course, visitors from overseas proudly telling folk back home how marvellous America is. We should thank the park staff for their dedication to keeping alive the park in the interests of everyone.

George Soule, of Mayflower fame is my direct ancestor. Others helped found Jamestown, New Amsterdam and others down from Quebec. My family has fought in every war from King Philip's war to the "Indian" Wars (I had ancestors on both sides of the "Indian Wars" and Jackson murdered more than a few with the Trail of Tears. My family has fought in the foreign wars America has been in. So, to me it is family history and honor to preserve the battlefields.
I am sure people go to various parts of the Gettysburg battlefield and say: "That reminds me of a view in Scotland" or "This countryside is so like the Border Country" or "Doesn't this aspect have a Wealden feel to it.?" I suppose that is part of the allure of the place. Yes we know the roads brought the soldiers of two great armies to this little town in south-central Pennsylvania and that the complex geology of the area was part of the reason for that communication network but it is its place in history; arguably the last great encounter battle ever fought, is without equal. Then there are the stories: plenty of them to be interesting but not so many as to be overwhelming and in some ways repetitive as so many would be half a century in the Great War and almost lost in the mass statistics of military and civilian deaths of the Second World War. I suppose I was rather overwhelmed myself by John Pullen's book fifty years ago when I first read and re-read the story of the 20th Maine but when I think about the Little Round Top segment now having seen so many of the splendid videos, it is Paddy O'Rourke leading the 140th NY who perhaps captures the imagination most. With great composers like Mozart and Schubert we wonder what they might have achieved had they lived. Stories of the generals often begin with their career at West Point and where they finished in their class. Little mention is made of Paddy O'Rourke finishing first in his class in 1861 and that leaves one wondering what he might have gone on to achieve had he survived that day. Yet his sacrifice reminds us we are all individuals and only human; a sacrifice echoed before, during and after 2 June 1863 all over the world and still, sadly, being replicated somewhere every day. And maybe that is true message of this beautiful place.
Been to Gettysburg many times. Took the grandkids and they just loved it it's good to see the excitement they had and wanted to go back in a week we'll be going back to Gettysburg again with the grandkids. It will be nice to go up on little round top. I learned something new every time on the ranger walks
There should have been Confederate representation at this re-opening ceremony. A Lost opportunity for maybe some reconciliation and honor, but Hell No !! Roy
@@andybillnewstime they were good at fighting but fought for immoral cause and rightly were defeated. Thank God and sacrifices of 100s of thousands of union soldiers for that.
Just went to Gettysburg for the first time in my life a month ago. Had no idea Little Round Top was closed until I got there. Hopefully I’ll be able to go back one day.
Was glad for the reopening. Sad to see no recognition of Confederate units. Or Confederate re-enactors or even Confederate battle flags. Makes you winder who the Union fought there for three bloody days.

It always bothers me when I see celebrations and profits being earned on a site where humans were slaughtering each other. Just fails to sit right with me. I do get the historical importance, but knowing these events occur on blood stained land is weird.
It's hard to imagine such a bloody battle took place on this beautiful piece of land.

I need the American flag you have on display to be raised. It is supposed to be the tallest and proudest flag on display. You guys should know this.

Beautiful place to visit. I visited last year and little round top was still being worked on. I'm glad it's finally open for public to enjoy again.

It was an incredible, combined effort to help to restore and preserve Little Round Top...as were the efforts to "hold" Little Round Top in 1863...

Wasnt the 20th Maine fought in a wooded Area? I remember seeing Gettysburg movie and i recall the scéně of the 20th Maine charging down a wooded hill
They were attacked from the rear of the hill which is wooded all the way down the hill. The front of the hill served as a signaling position

My “BNOC”WRITTEN PORTION was on the Battle of Little Round Top. Got an A . Very important Battle. Chamberlain was great. So were the snipers.
Is it true you removed the hundreds of Maine granite stones generations of Mainers left at the 20th Maine marker?
