I've been following these on UA-cam for a while! LOVE this! This app can't help but increase interest in the battle and the war, likely from a younger audience. Who doesn't want that? I think it also brings up the opportunity for more conversations on movements, times and actions among historians. A bunch of good stuff I think!
Love it!! The fact that it's laid over top of the modern topography is great. Really gives people a better understanding of where the men actually were. And it will help with future preservation efforts!
I have been wanting this app so badly, and wish I had known about it when I visited Gettysburg in April. Getting to see the troop movements and actions over modern mapping and landmarks really drives home the connection to history for me
Wow, this is fantastic, especially when used in conjunction with your videos. This detailed interactive map shows the troop movements across the terrain that you show so well in your videos and brings to life the excellent battlefield maps on your website. I use the Batchelder Positions of Troops map of 1876, on the Library of Congress archive. This brings it all to life in detail. It can also be used in conjunction with the various podcasts, such as the excellent LBG podcasts on Addressing Gettysburg. I’m going to have to go back and watch your Gettysburg 158, 159 & 160 videos again with this to hand. A brilliant addition to your excellent coverage of the Battle of Gettysburg. Marvellous idea. Mick - London, England.
I’m a Brit who’s been studying and visiting Gettysburg since 2005. This map is so cool 😎 Just in watching the video I’ve got a better idea of the Peach Orchard, Wheatfield and my favourite location, Culps Hill. But you need to have walked the actual fields to understand terrain and distances. So thank you Battlefield Trust 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Great app! Would be interesting to also get a view of where the key commanders (Lee, Meade, Longstreet, etc) alongside these troop movements and combat actions
This is fantastic. I love tech & history. (Especially Gettysburg) I look forward to this porting into VR eventually, then MR (mixed reality) to the final point where you wear eye glasses & will see formations on the actual ‘battlefield’ in front of you ‘live’ in a similar fashion. Imagine having smoke effects, weather, tall corn or other fog of war items programmed as well. (All while standing at various points in the park.)
Wow this is amazing! I'm currently reading Kent Brown's Meade at Gettysburg and although I have a pretty good grasp on the basics, there are some parts, particularly in Sickle's salient where I had a hard time visualizing what I was reading. This would be a great tool to use during reading sessions and on trips.
It has long been a dream of mine to combine battlefield walks like the excellent ones the Gettysburg Trust give us, overlaid with maps like this or the Wilder Historian produce. The maps allow us to get an excellent feel for direction and scale, but unless one has an encyclopedic knowledge of the actual terrain, it is difficult to appreciate the ground they’re fighting on and the obstacles they’re encountering; whereas the walks do an excellent job bringing the experience of the men front and center, but understanding direction of march and timing can be confusing when all they can do is point and ask us to imagine. I hope that perhaps in the future, we might see just such a crossover on Gettysburg, and even more civil war battlefields!
I have so much to say about this app. I am studying the battle and I use technology to study. I use my study books while I am listening to the book on an audio reader while watching the action on the app. This is crucial for studying.
Been wanting someone to do this for sooo long. In my dreams, someone would somehow tie the whole war together like this so you could see the Anaconda strategy play out. Would be incredible. Thanks for posting this!!
What an amazing 🗺️ to track the battle of Gettysburg perfect for students in all grades and levels to get an idea of the battle ⚔️, w real time positions or rgt and brigades 🇺🇸
This is great! If I could offer just one suggestion for improvement, allow the user to view from a higher altitude, like 30,000 ft. Happy to sacrifice the lower altitudes. I would probably never view it from less than 8,000 ft. Keep up the good work!
Gettysburg Animated is great!! This Ap is the closest thing I have seen to the "Electric Map" in the old visitor’s center which was by far the best display for understanding the Battle, IMO. If this computer program “gettysburganimated” could be combined with a 3D topographic map of the Gettysburg Battlefield in 1863 what a wonderful addition to the new visitor's center! I second the request for a Gettysburg Battle with the historic base map. Otherwise I want to know if Rodes men stopped at the first Dunkin Donuts when they entered Gettysburg or if the preferred Starbucks? Maybe other Rebel units were searching around for the Piggy Wiggly... needed ice for their coolers? If the Confederates had stopped in at the Wal-Mart for boots... then the hell with Cemetery Hill and the Battle in Gettysburg second and third days might never have been fought? History can be so confusing!? Truthfully, I preferred the old visitor’s center because it had the Electric Map which combined troop movements and the topography of the battlefield. I also liked the huge weapons display in the old visitor's center, which may not appeal to some others. Thank you once again Gary, Chris and everyone at Battlefield Trust and of course a bow to all of the distinguished expert guests on the videos; you educate me.
Would be really cool if you guys added a layer of a more time-accurate map overlay. Gaia GPS app has a bunch of layers you can add and remove over topo maps and you can increase/decrease the opacity. I am not sure if these maps exits, but if they do, I think that would be a great addition.
When I was a kid my Dad and I were disappointed when a huge, ugly eyesore observation tower was built at the battlefield. Glad to day it's gone and glad we can donate to American Battlefield Trust. Just dropped another check in the mail this morning for the matching funds acquisitions.
I’d be really curious to know what Mead was thinking/doing. I mean, when/where did he heard what was going on during Day 1? Did he have any second guessing during the long period of no Confederate attacks on Day 2, until later in the afternoon? How aware was Mead of the critical nature of Little Round Top and the defense of it? Which areas of the field did he visit during the battle - or did he mostly stick to his HQ? What was going on in his mind post Pickett’s charge? Did he wasn’t to counter attack? Did he plan to continue the fighting on the 4th? We hear so much about the corps commanders in this battle - we don’t hear much of what Meads experience was. Please consider this in a future video.
Also might be interesting if possible for this to allow the user to track the movements of key individuals, like George Mead or Governor Warren, for example.
For version 2.0, it would be cool to add different background maps. I was thinking a USGS Quad map would be an awesome backdrop so u can see more of the actual terrain. Very cool.
I've seen maps like this before in books, and the question that keeps me from fully appreciating the information regards how many men are represented by each line. Can you help me understand the scale of each line?
What a stupendous tool! Next time I want to jump down a Gettysburg Rabbit Hole, this could keep me occupied...for hours! I do confess, however, that I'm a dinosaur...I like my paper maps and resource books.
I vote for having the option of an historical background. Short of that a current topographical would be great. Thinking about it, if I had to choose one, I'd go for the topographical. The current background would be my absolute last choice. A blank background would be better. There is nothing about a current view that I find helpful at all except for roads, and that is only if the roads are the same as they were in 1863, which they are not. In fact, my first thought when the video started was "why is there a current view?". Just to bring my point home, whatever the fee is, I wouldn't pay for this with a google earth background.
I’m going to second this motion. To also have the option of a contemporary map would be excellent. It’s cool to see how the battle played out compared to modern roads and structures, but it would also be great to toggle to the original map to better understand why certain movements made sense at the time.
God knows how much work this would take, but if there was a way to load this Google Street view style of viewpoint for at least the major positions then somebody who has no concept of what it’s like to be looking onto the enemies positions in Devils den or up at the Breastworks on Culps Hill… Obviously it be modern scenery so you can gray out buildings that didn’t exist. Also matching the “Street view” scenes weather conditions to those recorded on the days of the battle would probably be a good idea.
I have Lived in various parts of NC from the Mountains to the Sea.I grew up next to the 105 acre Greensboro "Battlefield Park" and the entrance has the "Battle Map".. As a kid I was dumbfounded as to why they chose that spot knowing full well the battlefield covered nearly 20 sq miles and the actual deciding maneuvers in said battle, were executed 3 miles to the South. . I now live in Wilmington and have recently taken note of the Earthworks behind my home. Supposedly they are not Protected as a battlefield as they were fall back positions and..."The maps do not show a battle there'', But locals still have plaques and keepsakes noting the area where family fell. When you take note of them, you realize hundreds died as they fell back. Obviously the fighting was so widespread and chaotic among the pines that the actual accounting may never be known. I think I am going to do a dig on the Eastern side of the works and see what I can find. Even if to satisfy my own curiosity.
You have the 118th PA holding the the far right flank. The 62nd, and 110 PA holding the center. While the 115 PA regroups. And attacks to cover the reformation. The Maine were a bunch of pansies. Maine regiments always retreated. The PA and NY regiments took the brunt of the attacks. And Maine regiments, because they had to, stood their ground.
Interesting concept, but would like to see this on period map and not the latest google maps. I know this helps to locate for today, but it would be better to visualize over the original terrain.
While it doesn’t go down to company you can definitely follow the regiment. I also have an ancestor that was in the 45th NC. Was wounded, captured and spent time at Letterman hospital
Great idea but THERE IS LITERALLY NO WAY TO SIGN IN AND USE IT. You get a message that says "you have successfully logged in but you have not been granted access" and it tells you to "contact your admin." If you go in further you have to give up all your personal information, especially your phone number. Why would anyone in their right mind give up their phone number?
Did you not read the website? Its very clear how to sign up. And you give your phone # to dozens and dozens of places when you sign up for things -- why not to just one more individual who poured their heart and soul into a unique product? Sheesh.
The point partly is to show where it happened on the battlefield today. The 1863 maps aren’t that complete or accurate as they discuss towards the end. But thanks for your uniformed opinion.
LOVE these animated maps!
Literally putting the battles into motion and will be epic for presentations!
I've been following these on UA-cam for a while! LOVE this! This app can't help but increase interest in the battle and the war, likely from a younger audience. Who doesn't want that? Holy smokes. This thing is amazing! I hope that this inspires similar treatments of other battles.
Would love to see this for every major battle. How cool would it be to watch this for battle of the bulge or Waterloo?
Love it!! The fact that it's laid over top of the modern topography is great. Really gives people a better understanding of where the men actually were. And it will help with future preservation efforts!

This APP is amazing! I like that it highlights (in green) the historical roads and farm lanes...
I've had this app for 9 months and love it. Thanks, guys, for finally covering it.
That is the coolest and most useful app I've seen in some time.
I can see this moving toward an entire Civil War "Choose your Battlefield" app.
I love this app. Thank you for sharing this info.

This sounds like a cool feature, I just signed up for it. It would be cool to have a map of every battlefield but Gettysburg is a cool start
Holy cow!! This is incredible!!
Ooooooo! This app is terrific. Efficient way to memorize the battle
Lots of maps based on contemporary, detailed maps are available. It would be great to be able to switch to such a map.
Waterloo! A short train ride from London!

Wow awesome project
It would be cool to have a "period map" to be able to follow the thoughts of the unit commander walking the landscape as it was.
That is an awesome app, very well done.
Enjoyed seeing Gary on the Kelsey Grammar war series. Interesting app!

Wow this is fantastic ❤
I like what Chris M. said about locations of monuments. That’d be a great addition to this simulation… which I have been using since March.

Wow !
What do you mean the monument to the 13th NJ is not where they were?
that was fun.
will there be a app for Apple?
Does anybody know if this app is available through Google Play Store for an android phone?
